"Do you like my brother?" Peyton asked cocking her head to the side as she looked up at me from her place on my bed.
We were currently lying sprawled on my bed at eight o'clock at night, the drapes of my canopy shielding the inside of the bed, a bag of skittles and popcorn, my laptop playing Tangled, and Ace curled up at the end of my bed snoring lightly. We had managed to fit quite a bit into our three-hour time frame too. While the brownies were cooking in the oven, we made a pillow fort that connected the kitchen to the lounge room. Played numerous board games in which I legitimately lost at multiple times, and I gave Peyton a complete makeover and she did the same to me. It was some of the best fun I've had in a while which is pretty depressing.
Peyton continued to look up at me expectantly. "Uh...well... I don't know him that well..." I avoid her strong gaze that is oddly the same as her Xavier's intense one.
"He likes you", she said matter-of-factly.
How? I mean, it doesn't matter anyway. Nothing can ever happen between us... or anybody. My life's too complicated and shaky to add someone else to the equation that I'm bound to leave behind. Again. It's happened a number of times, each worse than the one before.
"How're you sure?" I queried, trying to appear as uninterested as possible. It shouldn't matter what he thinks of me anyway. Or anyone else.
"Because he let me stay with you."
I was going to ask her what she meant by that, but she let out a long-exhausted yawn and rubbed her eyes with the balls of her palms. "Can you to tuck me in please?" Peyton looked up at me with drowsy eyes.
"Of course." I smiled at her, moving the remaining snacks from the bed to my bedside table.
I pulled the covers over her and tucked her in, smiling at how her face scrunches up as she yawns. "Do you know 'You are my sunshine'?" I nodded in reply getting comfortable under the covers also.
"Can you sing it to me?" Peyton looked up at me with big adorable eyes.
"Sure." I smiled tenderly at her.
The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried
"You have a beautiful voice" Peyton gasped in awe, to which I gave her a warm smile in return and continued.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
Tonight, Peyton really has proved to be the little sister I've always wanted but, never had.
