"Alright class. Today I'll be going around the class and we'll be talking about what we want to be once we are older. Any volunteers?" Mrs. Clark says.
My hand shoots up in the air.
"Reagan?"
I smile and say, "I want to be a soldier in the Canadian Armed Forces."
I hear laughs go through the whole class and I sink lower into my seat. Even Mrs. Clark is trying to stifle a laugh. She finally calms herself enough to say, "Well that will be something I'd like to see. Reagan it's not easy for a girl to make it."
"I know but I will. I can do it." I reply.
That makes everyone laugh even harder. Then the boy in front of me puts his hand up. Mrs. Clark says, "Go ahead Luke."
He nods and says, "I don't think it's a ridiculous idea. I think it's an amazing idea. I would really appreciate if she served for our country. As for me I want to be a singer. It's a long shot just like making it into the army but I think I can do it. I think Reagan can too."
Mrs. Clark looks like she is at a loss for words because of Luke's response. I take that opportunity to mouth "Thank you." He winks back. For the rest of the school year we were best friends. Inseparable you could say.
But then he went back home to Sydney and I never heard from Luke again but he was always special to me because he helped me realize what I had to give to this world.
And I would always be thankful for Luke Hemmings, no matter how far apart we were.
