After long arguments for days with my mother, it was decided we would be leaving the luxurious comforts of Branwhick stables to move to a small island off of the coast of England.
My mother and I didn't speak throughout the long trip. Complete silence like always.
The town was small, there were a lot of horse trails leading to the small beach from all over the island. Once we hit dirt road, I spotted riders riding their horses along the roads. Sheep being moved throughout the roads and teenagers around my age walking along the roads.
"Wow" I rolled my eyes.
"You need a break from competing at a high level, you both do" My mother told me.
"Whatever" I mumbled leaning my head against the car window and waited for the trip to be over.
I spotted a sign that read:
Holloway riding school
After an hour drive. The pastures were full of snow as horses stood in the cold with heavy warm rugs on, protecting them from the harsh winds of the winter.
I looked out to the small stables. It wasn't as fancy or luxurious as our old stables but I had seen worse. Horses lined the passages of the stables.

An exhausted and grumpy gelding kicked at the float and stomped his hooves demanding fresh air. As I lead Krieger out of the trailer I noticed I was catching the other riders attention. I began to feel self conscious as they all stared. My mother was demanding a stable hand to carry the tack from the SUV.
"Mrs Harris" a lady called form across the yard. She had long blonde hair and a pearly white smile.
"I'm Amanda Frasier we spoke over the phone" she introduced herself.
"And you must be Brooklyn" she smiled at me shaking my hand.
"It's lovely to have the both of you here" she said cheerfully.
"I'll get a hand to take your horse for you" she said calling over a young man.
"All due respect but I'd rather make sure Krieger settles in" I said respectfully not wanting to offend her.
"Of course" she smiled.
"This way" she encouraged us to follow her into the stables. Horses stuck their heads over their stalls to see the new addition to their stable. Krieger was loving the attention he was receiving doing all he could to nicker and socialise with the other horses.
Amanda showed us to an empty stall in between two dark bays. A small tag on the side of the stall read Krieger in chalk.
"I hope this will do" Amanda said opening the stall for me.
"It's great, thank you" I smiled at her undoing Krieger's halter. The gelding went straight to the sides of his stall where small bars separated the horses. The two bays were happy to welcome the gelding in, sending soft snorts his way.
"I'll take you to your team" Amanda said leading me down the hall to a large open room. There were lockers and couches as well as a sink and refrigerator. Three boys and a girl sat on the couches.
"Guys, this is Brooklyn" Amanda introduced. A tall African American boy stood up and shook my hand.
"Alex" he sent a kind smile my way. The girl with long brown hair and green eyes stood up next, she seemed around my height.
"Gabby" she introduced.
The last boy with short brown hair only raised his hand in my direction,
"Callum" he shrugged.

"Are you staying in a dorm?" Gabby asked trying to fight off the awkwardness in the room once Amanda said her farewells.
"No, we have a house not far from here" I answered.
"Take a seat" Gabby said pointing to a free spot on the couch next to her. I nodded and took a seat next to her.
"How long have you been riding?" Gabby asked.
"Since I was 4 but I didn't start competing until I was 8" I responded.
"Are you good?" Callum asked rudely earning an elbow from Alex and a glare from Gabby.
"I'd like to think so yeah" I nodded in all honesty.
"I better go tack up" Callum mumbled quietly leaving the room.
"Don't mind him, he's just going through a breakup" Alex whispered as if Callum could hear. A sudden commotion came from out in the hall. The three of us jumped from our seats to go and see what was going on. Krieger stood in the hall snorting and rearing at the grey Andalusian Callum had just lead out of the stall. I grabbed Krieger's lead rope and attempted to calm him down. After slipping on the halter and lead rope I begun to calm down the gelding. He took long deep breaths through his nose as I rubbed his neck. A loud crash came from a stable hand who dropped a bucket making Krieger rear, I lost grip of the lead rope and he took off out of the stable and into the bushes. An older chestnut was already saddled with an English saddle and was being brought in from a workout.
"Can I borrow your horse?" I asked the young lady, she looked at me confused but I didn't give her time to reply. I was already mounted and cantering out of the front yard into the direction of wheee my gelding had just taken off to.

After searching the beach for 15 minutes, I was still following a fresh set of hoof prints in the sand. The beach went for miles and Krieger could already be on the other side of the island by now but I was trying to stay positive. I spotted three figures on horseback in the distance and as they got closer I noticed a horse being lead by one of the figures, the horse had no rider.
As the figures began to form into three girls around my age. I began to recognise the riderless horse.
"Krieger" I smiled.
"Thank you so much!" I called out to the girls, slipping off of the chestnut and taking the lead rope from the girl on a black horse. She had dark skin and dark brown eyes.
"Your horse?" She asked. I nodded.
"He spooked and took off, I've been looking for him for ages" I explained.
"Holloway tack" a blonde girl with a soft sweet voice stated.
"Yeah I just started at Holloway" I nodded.
"We ride at Brightfields just a bit further up the beach" the girl who was holding Krieger's lead rope told me.
"I'm Zoe, this is Becky and Jade" she introduced.
"I'm Brooklyn" I smiled back at her.
"Well Brooklyn, If you need anything we're kind of neighbours" she giggled.
"Thank you" I smiled back at her kind gesture.
"See you around Holloway!" Jade called turning her horse around, her friends following close behind.
I looked at Krieger who was sniffing at the sand and looking out to the tides that were rolling in.
"Come on" I mumbled to the horses encouraging them along.
