I woke to the familiar sound of suitcases being wheeled in. My mother and father spoke in hushed whispers. I stood on the staircase looking at the two of them. They had no love for each other, no physical contact was being made and it saddened me. They were fake, their marriage was fake, everything around them was fake including me.
"Father" I stated taking my time coming down the stairs,
"Brooklyn" he nodded towards me.
"How was your drive?" I asked as we took a seat at the table for breakfast.
"The countryside is beautiful" he nodded.
"First time being here?" I asked.
"Why such a sudden interest?" He asked.
"What can I say, I'm trying to get to know my father because this opportunity will most likely never arise again" I shrugged.
"No I've been here before" he answered honestly.
"When?" I asked.
"A few years ago, a client of the firms lived in this area" he said. Talking about Callum's father.
"Is that the only time?" I asked raising an eyebrow at him.
"From what I can recall yes" he nodded.
"You used to tell me lying was bad, yet you do it, the hypocrisy" I mumbled.
"Excuse me!" He raised his voice.
"You were in England specifically here on Christmas Day!" I pointed out.
"The exact time you said you were in LA, why'd you lie?" I asked.
He sat quietly not moving a muscle, my mother took a sip of juice but avoided eye contact with me.
"I have a private lesson in half an hour, you should come and watch if you don't have to suddenly fly to LA" I rolled my eyes leaving the table.

My stomach was grumbling throughout the car ride to the stables. My parents were in the front seat facing away from each other and avoiding physical contact, Callum and I were fake dating and still touched more then my parents did.
"Mr and Mrs Harris, welcome" Amanda smiled at my parents.
"Krieger is already saddled and waiting in the arena" Amanda told me. I buckled up my helmet when I spotted my coach holding Krieger's reins.
"Let's go Harris!" He called. I quickly mounted Krieger giving him a kiss on the nose be before mounting. I tightened the reins and listened for my next instructions.
"Warm him up" James rolled his eyes as if it should be obvious. I gave Krieger a soft tap with my boot to the side. He raised his head and snorted as if he just woke up. His trot started off lazily as if he wasn't putting in any effort. "Give him a tap of the whip!" Jams called from the fence beside my parents. I hated using the whip, Krieger hated using the whip, it made him more jumpy and stubborn when it was used. I brushed his across his bum lightly and even from the touch of it he snorted and jumped to the side as we softly cantered around the jumps.
"Head to the first jump" James called. I nodded at his request and as Krieger watched the first jump get closer he begun to move to the side as if he was avoiding it. With the jump a few metres away Krieger still refused to listen and as hard as I pulled on the reins ams tapped him with the whip he stopped hard, I barely held onto the saddle as he refused. Krieger snorted and stomped his hoof as he raised his head high in the air. I looked to my parents, they both had disapproving scows spread across their faces.
"Easy!" James said soothingly to Krieger who flared his nostrils and began to back up.
"That horse is gone!" My father yelled pulling out his cellphone and storming away. I could feel tears prickling in my eyes as I slipped of off Krieger and landed softly on my feet.
"You're okay Krieger" I said rubbing his neck.
"Walk him around the jumps, he might not be used to the arena or the jumps and that's what is making him spook" James shrugged.
"That's not it" I disagreed looking into Krieger's big brown eyes.
"What is it then Brooklyn?" He asked.
I lead Krieger closer to the jump and he followed warily.
"You're okay" I said softly as we closened to the jump. We circled the small oxer and Krieger stood tall and still now bored with the object. I mounted Krieger once more and circled the jumps again, as we broke into a soft canter. Krieger happily jumped the jump and took the course with all the energy he could. As we circled to the water jump Krieger snorted and fastened his gait soaring over the final jump.
"There you go!" James called.
"Let's just hold off on the drama big boy" he said patting Krieger's neck.
"Let's take you out onto the cross country course" James encouraged the rest of the team is out there. Seeing Callum made me nervous we hadn't really spoken since last night, since the kiss.
