I woke up with aching ears. When I glanced in the mirror I saw them, the soft tender points that now shaped the top of my ears. I covered them with my hair.
I was not ashamed of them, I knew Maya would be though. Avoidance, one of the things I hated in life. I knew she would avoid me, you can only be happy so long before the world crashes around you.
Another sigh escapes my lips. Every since the plague, I have been sighing. Sometimes I sigh one after the other, sometimes it's one, an hour later until the next.
My finger danced across the reflective glass hanging off the back of the closet door. My eyes scanned over my features. Another sigh.
I quickly shook my head. I needed a bright side. A hurray as I flip the next page in the book of life. Though I knew my book was bigger than others, the hurray not quite large enough as the words scroll across the page of my fairytale.
An almost hysterical laugh slips past my lips. The deaths were finally catching up with me. No matter how many pages I turned, the word death still burns through.
I close my lips tightly, shaking my head. A sudden bang made my head turn to the door, a frown contorting my features. What this time?
The wood gave a cry as it was forced open. A woman stood in the doorway, a large smile on her lips, the sparkle of her teeth matching the sparkle in her eyes.
"Yuki, I finally get to meet you in person," she whispered breathlessly. I didn't move or react, though questions swam through my mind. her arms slipped around me, smushing my face to her chest. "oh, Yuki," she whispered into my hair. Jacob appeared behind her, his eyes wide until he saw us only hugging.
"I, uh, don't mean to sound rude, but, who are you?" I asked. She chuckled lightly, letting me out of her grasp. a small smile still rested on her face as she stared at me, her hands on my shoulder.
"I am Kane(caw-nay), better known as mother nature. I was your mom's best friend when we were children. She... she told me to save you if the Fae attacked as I told her they would," she frowned, staring at the floor, her hands falling limp at her sides. "The fifth 'Mother Nature' passed down her powers to me as the powers were passed down to her from the fourth," Kane explained. I nodded slowly.
"You're early," I commented, shrugging off her words. I did not want to think about my mom at the moment. Jacob nodded quickly from beside her, taking in a deep breath.
"She was suddenly at the front of the castle when I was gardening, rushing through the door," he said breathlessly. "I ran after her, she tends to get into trouble, so I wanted to make sure she did not," he added. he touched his chin for a moment. "I don't know how she knew this was y-" his eyes landed on the pointed ears I now had. Kane frowned at him, then looked at my ears as well.
"your ears have grown in," Jacob said. he glanced behind him, almost warily. I nodded slowly, worry contorted my face as my finger gently touched them.
"what will the humans think?" I asked. Jacob shook his head, watching as I pulled my hair out of its bun. the hair was curled slightly, waving down my back, successfully covering my ears. I sneezed as a piece tickled my nose.
"that should work, but when you turn full fae, you will not be able to hide it. you already look more graceful, and you are just standing there," Jacob commented. he pointed to the book of jokes on my bed. " go grab that book," he commanded.
"Okay," I muttered, shrugging a little. my socks did not make a sound as I picked up the leather cased book. when I turned around I was met with sparkling eyes, from both Kane and Jacob. Kane clapped quickly, a brighter smile lighting up her face.
"You walk so gracefully. I have no doubt that you are going to be a High Fae," She exclaimed. I blinked.
the more powerful you are, the more painful...
those words echoed in my head, my eyes squeezing shut. I was not looking forward to 4 days from now. I rubbed my eyes with a small sigh, it was too early for all this commotion. I sat on the bed with a sigh.
"You worried?" Jacob asked, walking over to me. I gave him a small smile and a nod. Kane was gone, from what Jacob had said before I assumed she was 'getting into trouble.'
"Yeah, Gabriel had said that the more powerful I was, the more it would hurt," another nod came from Jacob. He nervously scratched his neck.
"Yeah. I don't mean to scare you. I witnessed a man turn into a High Fae before. He begged for us to kill him when we didn't, he ended up killing himself," Jacob whispered. My heartbeat picked up with the new worry.
"Please don't let me kill myself, and please don't kill me," I whispered, my voice trailing off as I looked at my lap. He nodded, holding out his hand. I gently set my palm in his. A smile spread across his face as he gave my hand a light squeeze.
"I promise."
