****Whitney's POV****

"Girl, why in the world would you invite her?! She's gonna get us kicked out of the movie theater!!" Janet frowned. We were at our lockers because it was the end of the day, and my friends and I were heading to the movies since it was Friday. I had decided to invite Mariah to join us because I realized that she didn't get to do much outside of going to school and taking care of her siblings. She never had the chance to just be a 14 year old kid, so I talked to her during class and invited her to join me and my friends.

"She's literally gonna ruin the whole thing! I just know it!" Céline added.

"Guys, Mariah's not a bad person! I mean, over the past few weeks she and I have gotten to know each other and....she's actually pretty chill. Besides, she needs this....she doesn't get to do things like this often." I explained.

"Probably because she and her rotten siblings have been banned from half of the places in the city!" Céline rolled her eyes.

"No, Céline. I meant that Mariah's practically raising herself and her siblings because both of her parents are absent....she's been forced to assume responsibility that no 14 year old should have to. Plus, she's dealing with some personal identity issues on top of that....and she still manages to keep things together as best as she can. Honestly, Mariah's the bravest kid I know." I told my friends as I entered my locker combination. I then opened my locker, only to have a folded piece of paper fall out....so I picked up the paper and unfolded it to read what it said.

"What's that?" Janet questioned, her eyebrow raised in curiosity.

"It says, 'Whitney, you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. I really like you, but I am afraid to tell you this to your face because I am afraid that you could never feel the same way about me. I hope that one day I will be brave enough to tell you how I feel, face to face. But for now, I will settle for writing to you because I can no longer hide my feelings for you'." I read aloud.

"It's signed 'your secret admirer'......" I continued, looking at my friends.

"Ooooh, Whitney's got a boyfriend!! This is so cute!!" Céline grinned, and I playfully rolled my eyes.

"You got a boyfriend, Wilma? When did that happen?" I heard behind me. I turned around to see that Mariah had approached us, so I gave her a small smile before answering her.

"I don't have a boyfriend, Mariah. Someone stuck a note in my locker....that's all." I answered her as I dumped my unneeded books in the locker.

"Anyway, are you guys ready to go? Cause I am!" I continued, putting the note in my pocket and closing my book bag. I don't know exactly why, but I didn't want to talk about my 'secret admirer' in front of Mariah....not because I didn't like Mariah enough to include her in my girl talk, but almost for the opposite reason. I liked spending time with Mariah, even a bit more than I liked hanging out with Janet and Céline....but sometimes, I'd get nervous around Mariah and I wasn't exactly sure why.

"Sure, I'm ready! Say....we getting food? Cause I'm hungry as fuck!" Mariah said, making me giggle at how blunt she is.

"Of course! Mama always tells us to eat before going to a movie." I smiled at the blonde, closing my locker.

"Well, why we still standing here? Let's go get some damn food!!" Mariah beamed, grabbing my hand and pulling me.

"Oh boy....here goes nothing." I heard Janet mumble, and I heard Céline snicker.

'Maybe the girls will see that Mariah is not all bad after actually spending time with her.....'
