This story would be told from Charles' point of view.
(I always got what I wanted. That's how I roll in this life. I never wanted a woman like I wanted her. She bewitched me since the first time we met).
Charles sips another glass of wine. Unlike George, he's never been popular. One shorter leg made his walk a bit limp. And he wasn't the heir to Earl Worthington. He is just the second in line.
His father always compared him to his charming big brother. Never like Charles that much. His mother was too busy with her "friends" (male ones).
Young men in his position usually served in army. He couldn't because his bad leg. Or served the church. Not his calling.
Charles never really understood why he got drawn to politics. Maybe because he felt the power. Once attained, never felt enough.
Power to rule weaker folks. To control them.
Tonight he realized his error. He couldn't force her to accept him. Not like a whore. Emmie is a noblewoman. She's sweet and gentle. Unlike some ladies who prefer rough treatment from him. Emmie wouldn't enjoy it.
Seeing she got married to Douglas Bhaskar. The jerk she worshipped.
Charles snorts. She isn't too smart. Well, most women aren't gifted in that area. Although she looks fine in her assets as a woman.
Charles tightens his fists. Thinking Doug has touched her intimately. He is going to kill that man. Made her suffer first.
He regretted he failed to kill him few years ago. When his men burned down his townhouse.
Charles fakes a friendly smile to another nobleman. He needs his vote in the parliament. He toasts to a politician when he's looking to his direction.
Charles hates to make a mistake. But he has made two mistakes. Douglas and Lucien. They are still alive and kicking.
Emmie and Doug have left the party.
Focus.
He forces himself to focus. Thinking that man would touch her tonight again drives him mad.
His woman.
She belongs to him.
Since the first time he saw her in that party. When George introduced her to him as his friend. When she smiled warmly to him. His cold heart wavered and never been the same.
His mind drifted to the past...
When his mother died many years back, the Prime Minister spoke to him for the first time. He never forgot that day.
"So, you're the one. My illegitimate son. You don't look too bright. But looks could fool anyone. When you're strong, act weak. If you're weak, you must look tough so your enemies couldn't bully you."
That day Charles was still a naive young gentleman.
He replied, "I don't understand, Sir."
The Prime Minister was rather too old for his mother's taste. Not usually the type of man she would entangle with.
The old man asked, "Let me be blunt, Son. Are you ready to kill your conscience? Do everything to attain power? If you wanna rule England, you must think like a true Machiavellian."
The concept of Machiavellian is to do anything even killing the Innocents to achieve power.
Charles replied, "I'm more than ready to sell my soul to a devil. Tired when everyone is looking down on me and my bad foot."
