the box

Moving day. Busy, exciting, and overall exhausting. Kim Hee-yong was finally moving into an apartment of her own, away from her nosy family, specifically Kim Seokjin, her older brother. "Ouch!" The male screamed, holding his throbbing foot. He completely disregarded the heavy box he had dropped in his haste to cradle his new injury.
"Oh, stop being a baby, Jin," Kim Hee-yong rolled her eyes at her older brother. Seokjin glared intensely at his sister.
"If your belongings weren't so darn heavy, Yongie, it wouldn't be a problem," he retorted sassily. Hee-yong just rolled her eyes again and gracefully picked up the box her brother had dropped. It was finally time for her to move into her own apartment and she was...... ecstatic. Not even her brother's attitude could put a damper on her mood. Hee-yong had been house hunting for months before she had finally found this apartment- the apartment of her dreams. There were two bedrooms, a living space, a decent sized kitchen and even rooftop access. Even though it was more space than was needed for one tiny girl, she loved it. The apartment was even a cheap price, just the right price for Hee-yong. Jin was quick to snatch the box from his sister's hands just before she crossed the threshold into the apartment.
"Ha! I beat you to it," he taunted childishly. Hee-yong just laughed lightheartedly and looked around at her new home. She had been lucky enough to only have one neighbor as no one else lived on this floor, and she had thanked her lucky star for that. Jin checked the time on his watch and grinned obnoxiously, clearly up to no good as usual.
"Well, little sister, it looks like it's time for me to go," he said. Hee-yong's jaw dropped.
"Wait, you're not gonna help me unpack?" She grabbed the older male's arm as he tried to make a run for it to the door. Jin smiled sheepishly and scratched his head with his free hand.
"Actually, I'm meeting up with Jimin and Hoseok. You'll be okay unpacking by yourself, right?" He asked. Hee-yong groaned and nodded, motioning to the door. Although Jin was older than her by a hefty four years, he definitely acted more childish than Hee-yong at times. Jin gave his sister a quick peck on the forehead and then giddily ran out the door.
"The nerve of that boy," Hee-yong mumbled to herself and began unpacking her kitchen items.

By the time Hee-yong had made it to her bedroom to unpack there, she was exhausted. She checked the time on her phone- 6:18 pm. She'd been unpacking for nearly four hours, and was beyond ready to get it over with. Luckily for her, she only had a measly three boxes to unpack in her room, one of which was nothing but clothing. She cut open the top of the clothing box with a box cutter and took a handful of pre-hung clothes into her hand. She silently thanked herself for hanging her clothes beforehand to make the process quicker. The closet had white, sliding doors with shutters on them and it was an easy feat to open them. The tiny girl hung the clothes on the rack and organized them by season- she was a bit of a freak for organization. Out of the corner of her eye, Hee-yong noticed a box lying on the floor. The box was rectangular and small, a pale pink color with a frilly white ribbon tied around it. Hee-yong concluded that the previous tenant of the apartment must've left it here, and although she wasn't usually one to invade the privacy of others, her curiosity got the best of her and she opened the box. Inside was a very thick bundle of letters, tied together by a single strand of white yarn. Every envelope had the same messy scrawl across the front that read: to my love- except for the very last one, which was blank. Hee-yong bit her lip in thought.
"Should I really do this?" She asked herself. She was never one to give into her curiosity on a whim, but it wasn't as if the owner of the letters was just going to show up around the corner and find Hee-yong snooping. Without wasting another second mulling it over, Hee-yong simply untied the thread and opened up the first letter.

I need to start off by saying that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for punching your jerk of an ex-boyfriend. I'm sorry for not listening to your pleas. I'm sorry for having revenge sex with-

Hee-yong sat the letter down with wide eyes.
"Not even a full paragraph in and it's already wild," she thought aloud. After shaking her head once, she returned to reading.

I'm sorry for having revenge sex with Eun-Ha. I only did it because of the things I seen. I saw the way you looked at your ex. I saw the way your smile looked so much more genuine around him than it ever is with me. I was so mad. And then Taehyung showed me the pictures of you sitting on Kai's lap when you told me you were at work. How was I supposed to know it was all a misunderstanding? How would you feel if you saw a picture of me sitting on Eun-Ha's lap?
This part was scribbled out slightly and was replaced with the next sentence:
How would you feel if you saw a picture of Eun-Ha sitting on my lap? Well, it doesn't matter now. You've already broken up with me, but I can't get you out of my head. All I can think about is how shiny your dark hair is, and the color of your eyes when the sun hits them just right, and the way you smile with your teeth when I'm being stupid (which I do a lot on purpose just so I can see that smile.) You're so beautiful, you know. But that's not why I love you. I love you because you were the only person who knew my whole story and still accepted me. You're the only person who can turn me into a babbling mess, when I'm usually so calm, collected and poetic. You are the only person who makes my heart thud against my rib cage so hard that I think it's going to break. How could I just let you go? I don't have the balls to face you right now, and I don't know if I ever will so this is the only way I can tell you how I feel. I love you, Areum. More than all the stars in the Galaxy, more than every drop of water in the ocean. I love you so much that it hurts. The thought of never seeing your face hurts. The thought of you hating me hurts so badly I could just drop dead. Please don't hate me. I will do anything to regain your trust.
With all my love,
Kim Namjoon.
