Hee-yong's heart stuttered in her chest as she examined the boy before her, chatting animatedly with her brother. He didn't look sick. No, he looked lively, healthy, and a lot more handsome than Hee-yong had expected. She remained in her frozen state until a hand waved in front of her face.
"Hello! Yongie, you there?" Jin asked playfully. Hee-yong snapped her attention to her brother and rolled her eyes.
"Aigoo! Yes I'm here," she exclaimed, causing laughter to erupt around their little table. Jin flicked his sister's hand and said,
"We've been trying to talk to you forever." Hee-yong grimaced, she hadn't realized she had spaced out for so long. Namjoon smiled at Hee-yong and she found herself smiling back. His dimpled smile was infectious.
"Anyway, would you like to join us at the park, Namjoon?" Jin asked, turning to the blonde headed boy. He felt an undeniable connection to the boy, they had automatically hit it off as if they'd known each other for years. Whether they became best friends or something more, Jin was open to finding out what was in store for them. Namjoon smiled but shook his head.
"Really, I've taken up too much of your time already," he said. Jin rolled his eyes and retorted,
"No, please come with us. You'd be rescuing me from spending the whole day with this nerd." He motioned to Hee-yong, who was being uncharacteristically quiet.
"Pabo! You're the nerd, not me!" Hee-yong swatted at her brother's head as he dodged her attempts. Namjoon chuckled lightly, his eyes sparkling as he watched the exchange. It had been a while since he'd seen a pair of siblings so close, it was refreshing to him. He also found that he really enjoyed the company of the Kim siblings, even if Hee-yong was being quiet most of the time, he could tell she was just shy. So that's why he smiled at the siblings and said, "I'd love to join you, if you don't mind."
The walk to the park wasn't very long but the trio chatted lightheartedly along the way.
"So Namjoon, what's your story?" Seokjin asked. Hee-yong sucked in a breath at her brother's words and Namjoon went silent for a moment.
"Well," he began. His tongue wet his lips as he mulled over his next words.
"I'm just a University student who loves to write music. There's nothing really special about me," he said. The words Hee-yong had read in his letter flitted over her mind.
"I wish I was him. I wish I was as healthy, good looking and loveable as him. Then you'd want me. I wish I could change but I can't. I'm stuck being just me. Just plain old Kim Namjoon, the ugly, boring, dying ex boyfriend."
Hee-yong couldn't stop the words that erupted from her mouth next.
"I think you're special," she said, as she stopped walking and turned to Namjoon. He jumped at her sudden outburst, his face crinkled in confusion.
"You are special, you shouldn't put yourself down or undersell yourself, Namjoon." Hee-yong was extremely serious, her eyes burned into Namjoon's own dark ones. Seokjin watched the two of them carefully, confusion also etched across his face. Hee-yong wasn't one to jump at people like that over something so small. There was a moment of silence before Namjoon broke it by smiling and saying,
"Okay. I'll keep that in mind, Hee-yong." Something about the way he said her name made Hee-yong shiver. She wondered how her name would look written in his handwriting. Hee-yong smiled widely and walked giddily the last little distance to the park. Seokjin chuckled and said to Namjoon, who looked lost in thought,
"Sorry for my sister, she's kinda weird sometimes." Namjoon shook his head at the man.
"No, don't apologise. It's been a long time since anyone has told me I'm special. I think I needed to hear that," he said. Jin clapped a hand on Namjoon's back.
"I'll race you to the swing set," he yelled and took off.
"Hey!" Namjoon ran after him, trying to catch up.
Hee-yong had immediately taken off the the large, purple, swirly slide where two small kids waited in line in front of her.
She looked like a child herself, with a goofy grin on her pretty face, her feet shuffling as she anxiously awaited her turn on the slide. It was quite an amusing and endearing sight to Namjoon and Jin, who had both reached the swing set only a split second apart. Seokjin bent over, putting his hands on his knees.
"Wow, I think I'm out of shape," he said through his panting. Namjoon clapped his back, slight pants falling from his lips as well.
"Me too, buddy," he said. Namjoon sat on one of the empty swings, his eyes finding Hee-yong as she slid down the slide, laughing. He had only just met her, but he couldn't keep his eyes off of her and he didn't know why. He also didn't know why he'd approached her at the ice cream shop, his body just moved on it's own. She looked so peaceful, eating her ice cream and analyzing the scenery. She looked like the lead character in a TV show, and the beauty of it had shaken Namjoon.
"So do you know my sister?" Jin asked, bringing Namjoon out of his thoughts. Jin had taken a seat on the swing next to Namjoon, and laughed as he noticed both of their legs were too long for the swings, so they just rocked awkwardly back and forth.
"No, I just met her today," Namjoon admitted. Jin smiled and teased Namjoon by saying, "Then why do you keep staring at her like a lovesick puppy?" Namjoon coughed and hid his face. He didn't realize Jin had caught him in the act of watching Hee-yong and was quite embarrassed. He quickly tried to save himself.
"I wasn't staring at her, the- the slide is pretty..." Jin laughed obnoxiously at the obvious cover-up but he played along.
"Right, isn't it? I can't decide if it's plum shade or lavender shade," he said through giggles. Namjoon shrugged, trying to act as if he was genuinely interested.
Jin suddenly stopped rocking his swing and glanced at Namjoon.
"My sister is the most incredible person I know. She's compassionate, funny, down to earth, the list goes on. But she's also still in love with her ex. So please, if you have any weird feelings toward her, don't overwhelm her anymore than she already is," Jin said. Namjoon's eyes once again found Hee-yong as she gently pushed a little girl down the slide. The little girl screamed wildly as she flew down, and Hee-yong smiled widely.
"My turn, my turn!" A little boy shouted, and Hee-yong helped him get seated, before she pushed him as well. Namjoon felt a little flutter in his chest, and he looked back at Jin.
"I literally just met her today, I don't know why I feel this way but I can tell that she's... Special." But still Jin's words played over and over in Namjoon's mind. She's still in love with her ex. Namjoon knew exactly how that felt, but he didn't tell Jin that. Jin flicked Namjoon's hand that was wrapped around the chain of the swing.
"Pabo! Stop undressing my sister with your eyes, I can beat you up, you know!"A/N: HI, there was a lot of fluff in this chapter lol. Sorry not sorry. But how do y'all feel about Namjoon's emotional development? What do you think is going on in Jin's mind? Keep reading to find out.
