The line rung four times before the call was answered.
"Namjoon, where are you? Are you okay?" Hee-yong sputtered. Worried was an understatement when describing her current emotional state.
Namjoon's voice rang through the phone immediately.
"Hey, calm down. I'm at home, what's wrong?" He asked. His voice sounded muffled and Hee-yong barely understood half of his words.
"Namjoon, I can't understand you," she said, still freaking out. When his voice answered once again, it was much clearer. He chuckled shortly and said,
"Sorry my mouth was full, I'm at home eating. What's wrong?" Hee-yong sighed heavily in relief. Her fears washed away and she grinned at Jin, who was watching his sister's facial expressions carefully.
"Nothing's wrong, I just wanted to see what you were doing, I have to go now, though," Hee-yong said. She paused for a minute before saying,
"I love you."
She hung up the phone quickly, knowing Namjoon wasn't going to say those three words back anyway.
"Please don't get yourself hurt, Yongie," Jin said as he shoveled a spoonful of ice cream into his mouth. Hee-yong rolled her eyes playfully and took a bite of her own ice cream.
"Namjoon won't hurt me," she said confidently. Namjoon was a soft sweetheart, despite his sarcasm and passive aggressive attitude at times. He was one of the kindest people that Hee-yong had ever met but she knew that wasn't entirely what Jin had meant.
"You know what I mean, Yongie. If he doesn't say it back to you soon, you're gonna go all mopey school girl on me," he said. Hee-yong giggled at Jin's description but she didn't deny it. She felt herself slowly getting more insecure and anxious. She was putting her feelings out there on the line, but Namjoon hadn't said a thing about it.
She tried to reason with not only Jin but also herself as she said,
"He acts like my boyfriend, he cuddles with me and kisses me and says really sweet things to me, he just doesn't say he loves me." Jin bit his lip as he thought of what to say. He knew his sister well, he knew how fragile her emotions were, even though she put up a good front most of the time.
"We both know that Namjoon is a good person, but we don't know what kind of emotional trauma he has gone through in past relationships, just like you and Jimin. It's really good that you're able to open back up to someone new now, but that isn't always possible for everyone. Namjoon could be recovering from his own Jimin, and I don't want you to get hurt in the process," Jin said reasonably. Even though Hee-yong knew Jin was right and she knew Namjoon was still recovering from Areum, she couldn't let him go.
"I love you, oppa, but can we talk about something else?" Hee-yong asked politely. Jin simply nodded and shoveled another spoonful into his mouth.
"I got a new job," he said. Hee-yong stopped eating abruptly.
"You did what?" She asked incredulously. She and Jin came from a fairly wealthy family, so throughout their childhood and most of their initial adult years, they hadn't been bothered to get a job. Jin had once worked at a pet shop, but he and the owner of the shop had become very discontent with each other so Jin had quit his part-time job. Jin wasn't very fond of obeying someone else's orders, so finding a job was hard for him but he didn't want to live off his parents forever.
"Okay, so the goal is to just make enough to pay for my business license without mom and dad's help," Jin said quickly as he began feeling excited. Hee-yong cocked her head in confusion.
"Business license?" She asked. Jin nodded happily and began to explain his plan.
"I want to open up that restaurant that we always talked about when we were younger- do you remember?" He asked. Hee-yong grinned and nodded, returning her brother's fond sentiment. Jin had always loved cooking and was very, very fond of food, so when they were younger, she wasn't surprised at all when he spoke of one day opening his own restaurant. Hee-yong paused and smirked at her brother.
"Are you still gonna let me work there?" She asked. Jin rubbed his face as if he was thinking about it, and glanced at his sister.
"I guess I could put you to work somewhere," he said playfully. Suddenly, Jin's phone rang loudly, cutting he and Hee-yong's conversation short. The name Taehyung briefly flashed across the screen before Jin instantly clicked accept call.
"Hello?" He asked. Taehyung was breathing heavily on the other end, sounding as if he'd just ran a marathon.
"Tae?" Jin asked. Taehyung sighed into the receiver and asked,
"Can you come over?" Jin furrowed his brow in confusion.
"Tae, I'm spending the day with Hee-yong," he said. Taehyung grumbled and said,
"Bring her."
The line went dead, and Jin stared at his phone blankly for a second.
"Hurry up and finish eating, Taehyung needs us," Jin said to Hee-yong. She quickly abandoned the ice cream and stood up.
"Let's go," she said and grabbed Jin's arm, dragging him away. The siblings got onto a bus, that was luckily stopping just in time for them to catch it, and made their way to Taehyung's place.
Nothing seemed out of place at the boy's home. The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful and quite beautiful to Hee-yong's eye. She loved the suburban feel of the neighborhood. The only thing amiss was the loud screaming coming from behind Taehyung's front door. Hee-yong and Jin glanced at each other nervously. Jin shrugged and hesitantly opened the door, allowing himself and Hee-yong inside.
"Tae, we're here!" He called out.
"Thank fucking god," Taehyung exclaimed. There was a loud whine, and then Taehyung appeared around the corner, entering from the living room, dragging a very disoriented Jimin by the ear behind him. Jimin's face was flushed from taking in too much alcohol, but as he saw Hee-yong, he perked up instantly. He tried his hardest to pry his ear out of Taehyung's steely grip but to no avail.
"Yongie, I missed you!" Jimin shouted. Hee-yong fought the urge to cover her ears as Jimin screamed every single word.
"I missed you too, Jimin," she said carefully. Taehyung finally released Jimin's ear and he rubbed at it roughly, trying to ease the pain. When he came to his senses, he charged at Hee-yong and scooped her into his arms.
"I love you, Yongie, I love you so much," Jimin said and began placing sloppy, wet kisses all over her face. Hee-yong struggled to push him away, but was unsuccessful.
"Isn't anyone going to help me?" She asked. Jin and Taehyung had gathered in a huddle and talked in hushed voices.
"He just showed up, drunk as a skunk, screaming and crying about Hee-yong. I don't know what to do with him," Taehyung complained. Jin rolled his eyes and sighed.
"He needs to stop, he doesn't need to confuse Hee-yong," Jin said. Taehyung nodded in agreeance.
"Yongie, please forgive me. I'm so sorry for everything I've done, I'm sorry for hurting you, please forgive me," Jimin pleaded, and buried his face into Hee-yong's neck. Hot tears dampened Hee-yong's shoulder and she felt her heart shudder with the force of emotional turmoil Jimin was causing to writhe inside her.
"Jimin," Hee-yong gasped out. Taehyung and Jin finally turned their attention to the other two and immediately pulled Jimin off of Hee-yong. Tears sprouted in the girl's eyes as Jimin protested his friend's grip on him.
"I'm gonna go," she said quickly and turned back to the door. Jin and Taehyung nodded, feeling sorry for Hee-yong.
"We love you!" Jin said to Hee-yong. She turned around and gave her brother and her friend her very best fake smile and told them the love was returned. And then she was gone.
