I was about eight years old when my parents died. On Mom's death bed she told me about magic and that her and Dad belonged to one of many magical guilds. She also explained that because of that fact, it was the very reason they were persecuted and eventually killed. I thought she was crazy and that she was dying so, well, she was loosing her mind. At least until a few days later when I somehow ended up at their guild's head quarters.
Upon arriving here I've learned that my parents were indeed a part of the guild, however not magic wielders. No, they were historians and explorers.
They discovered that magic existed and were activly exploring lore and tales of magical artifacts and even magical beings. The guild found them and to keep these things out of the wrong hands they asked for their help. I had always wondered why they'd go away sometimes for days or even weeks, now I know.
As for me, I'm not much help to the guild, but they still treat me as family and had promised my parents to look after me. Not that I really make it hard for them, I just do my own thing and help out when I'm asked. Do you blame me though, would you stand up to someone with amazing magical abilities when you yourself don't have any?
That's right, they don't think I have or ever will have magical abilities because it's usually passed down from bloodlines and I have no magical reletives by blood. There are some exceptions like say a near death experience or special items, but the rarest is a magical user born from an all human family. There are only a few cases in centries where that has been reported.
You see a magic wielder can only do magic if that said person already has magic within him or her. A Human person cannot learn magic, no matter how hard they try or want it. A magical weapon will not work and spells they come across will not either. It's the sad truth, but I could never hope to become a true guild member. So when I turn 18 I am so out of this place, then I can be done with this torture.
"What are you thinking so hard about, Tyrian?" Naxos asked coming up to me as I was sitting at the corner table with my laptop. Naxos was obviously one of the guild members and happened to be around my age, about maybe 16 or 17. He was one of our Fire affinitive magic users.
"Just writing a paper for school and trying to decide what I should write," I lied and rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly with a small chuckle.
"Really? So you weren't day dreaming about Liv?" He asked pointing the direction I had be staring off into. And yep, Liv was there sitting with her friend Rowan.
"Oh come on, as if. You know I don't like anyone that way, Dude. Besides I told you I won't be sticking around here, that wouldn't be fair to anyone," I mumbled.
"Ah lighten up, Man. You only live once so what's a few broken hearts?" He asked with a sly grin. I rolled my eyes. Did I also forget to mention he was a big flirt and girl crazed? I mean honestly he's on a mission to date every girl in the guild and then some.
"Whatever, Dude. I heard Mara is coming back from her mission tomorrow, aren't you worried about her going out on missions like that?" I asked, refering to his younger sister who was only 12 years old. Don't get me wrong she is a good fighter and very skilled, but she's just a child all the same.
"You know it bothers me, but she's always got back up and can take care of herself. So who am I to stand in her way? I mean I'm her brother, but I'm not her Dad. I trust her judgement and respect her skill set," he said with pride in his eyes. I shook my head at him, he really is a weirdo. "Which reminds me, Captain wants to see you," he added as he started to walk away.
I closed my laptop and put it in my bag, before putting my bag on and heading up to the second floor to the Captain's office. The Captain is the head of our guild and a powerful Spell Caster. He's different from Naxos, he doesn't have an affinity to just one power and needs spells to tap into those abilities. Spell Casters are the most common magic user types. The others like Naxos are Ability types. There are a few sub catagories, but these are the main two.
