"(Y/n)~"
You couldn't suppress the groan that escaped you as you heard your friend, Mei, calling your name in that sing-song voice of hers. You knew you weren't gonna like what she was about to say, or at least wouldn't care too deeply about it. But it was about to become the topic of the hour.
"What happened this time?" you sighed, taking a seat and making yourself comfortable. This was gonna take awhile.
"Well." Mei grabbed another chair and pulled it over so she could sit facing you. "You remember I was telling you about the cute guy that has been coming here lately? Always reading those smart-people books?"
"Those are generally referred to as law textbooks but sure. What about him?"
"Before I continue, I'm just gonna say I didn't need the smart-ass reply, but whatever. I saw him in the coffee shop down the street and I just had to say hello. So I went in there, said hi, reminded him that I worked at the library, and we fell into conversation. He's such a sweet dude, (Y/n), like, no joke." Mei had this dreamy look in her eyes that made you internally cringe.
"Mei, wasn't it just last month when you were obsessed with that Leo guy? You seem to like Mr. Smart guy for now but something tells me this crush of yours isn't gonna last five weeks," you said, eyebrow raised.
"It's not my fault I keep finding all these gems. Or "gems", should I say. They all look perfect, seem nice at first, but there's always this dark side to them that just isn't my style and...no thank you." Mei laid herself over the desk, arms sprawled out in front of her, short hair falling in her face and cheek squished against the hard surface. "Why can't I find someone like that Yoongi."
"Um, ever thought about asking him out instead of finding someone like him?" you questioned.
"Um, yes," Mei replied, mocking your voice. "And he rejected me before I could even finish asking. He was just like "I'm not interested, sorry," and that was that."
"Maybe this law dude is the one?" you tried.
"I hope so. Oh! I wasn't done my story actually. So we chatted for a bit and then he started talking about some party he's hosting. He doesn't live too far from here, maybe like a twenty-minute drive. He asked if I would be interested in going so I said yes." Mei stopped talking and was just staring blankly. A dreadful feeling began growing inside you.
"No. Absolutely not. You know I don't do that stuff anymore," you said, turning away and looking to a table where a few people were currently studying.
"(Y/n) c'mon. You're the one always saying you want to fix yourself and this would be a big step! You haven't gone to a party since the one five months ago--"
"I think I have a valid reason."
"--and this is your chance to start getting back to being yourself. I'll be there, so it's not like you'll be alone. I'll even stay with you the whole time instead of going off with Steven if it makes you feel better," Mei continued after being interrupted.
"So firstly, I'm guessing Steven is law dude? Also, you make it sound like going to parties was a thing I used to do which couldn't be farther from the truth. You know how I am, anyone would know just from looking at you and Yoongi--I'm a total loner with barely any friends and I'm not good with people. Going to parties was always a rare occasion for me so I don't know why you're making it sound like we used to go clubbing once a week or something," you sighed.
"All I'm saying is maybe by going to this party something good will come out of it. I know your nightmares have really been bugging you and maybe by going to the party you'll be overcoming some subconscious fear you have. It could really help you and your mental state, y'know? I won't force you to go but it's just you always want me to treat you normally and I think this would be a great way of doing that," Mei said.
