Today was supposed to be a stress-free day for you. Keyword: was. You didn't have work and it was Saturday which meant you were able to sleep in. You also didn't have any plans with Hoseok for today, or anyone for that matter. Just a date with you, some snacks, your couch, and your T.V. Alas, this fantasized day would never happen because the moment you woke up and checked your phone you realized it was Mei's birthday. With you completely forgetting this oh-so-special day, you currently had no gift prepared for your friend.
For most people, you could easily drive over to a store and pick up a present in no more than twenty minutes. Depending on what they want you'll either need to pop in for a second or you'll actually spend some time before choosing the right gift, specifically if it's any type of clothing or accessory. Usually you'll either give money or a gift card, that way the person can get whatever they want. Mei was different, though. The first time you two were going to spend her birthday together she told you that she didn't want anything store-bought. Her reasoning was because she wouldn't be able to tell if your gift was genuine.
"People can give you a gift and tell you all about how they think 'it was meant for you' or 'you'll absolutely love it' and that kind of bullshit. But there's no way for you to tell if they actually mean that. Of course, if you're close with someone you're more inclined to take their word for it. But even the closest of friends lie to each other sometimes," she had said.
At the time, you didn't really have enough time to make some extravagant, crafted gift so you decided to bake her a cake. It was pretty simple but at least it was something you put effort into. And your hard work certainly paid off because Mei was absolutely delighted. Even though you had complained about how plain and unoriginal it was she had insisted it was a great present, one that she was grateful for. And so this became her birthday tradition: you would bake her a dessert treat and the two of you would eat it together.
Due to your forgetting about the day, you had no idea what you were gonna make and, more importantly, you definitely didn't have enough ingredients. It looked like your first step would be to find a treat so you knew what you needed to buy at the grocery store. You quickly began looking up dessert recipes online. As you were scrolling through different desserts, you noticed a recipe for butterfinger cookie dough cheesecake bars that caught your attention. It didn't seem that difficult to make, didn't really require a whole ton of time, and it was something you've never made before. Why not try it out? The worst that could happen is Mei not liking it, and it's not like that would be a first--it's happened a couple of times.
You printed out a copy of the recipe and quickly got yourself ready for the day. You grabbed something quick to eat and made your way to the front door. Just as you were about to leave, the door opened and in walked Yoongi and Hoseok, both carrying plastic bags full of groceries.
"Guys, now is not the time. I've gotta go out and get some stuff for Mei's--"
"Present?" Yoongi finished. He held up the plastic bag. "Already bought it."
"I appreciate it but I highly doubt you knew what I was gonna make and got all the ingredients needed," you said as Yoongi began making his way to your kitchen.
He paused and glanced back at you. "You're right, I didn't. Which is why you're going to make a different dessert, one I picked out and got all this stuff for."
"What makes you think it's gonna be better than what I picked?" you asked, crossing your arms.
"I know it's gonna be better because Mei gave me the recipe herself," Yoongi answered with a smirk.
"What!? She knows what her gift is!?"
"Of course not. She gave me the recipe awhile back and said it looked interesting. It was actually around my birthday and she said she wanted me to have you bake it so she could try some," the shorter man said.
