I awoke to the sound of shouting in the distance. I rubbed my eyes, getting out of bed knowing that I should go and find out what on earth was going on now.
After getting dressed, I left my cottage and made my way through the tired old streets of York. The streets were empty. The shouting got louder and louder as I walked towards the river. Soon, I was close enough to recognize the voice. It was Ivar. He was shouting over to his brothers.I walked over, hearing Ivar hurl insults at his older brothers. My jaw clenched at the sounds. When I finally reached the crowd, I began pushing past people to see what was going on. I watched as Hvitserk looked to Ubbe. What was he doing? I then saw the middle brother step out of the ship and walk over to Ivar. Ubbe was now alone. Ivar seemed to enjoy the thought of his brother being totally alone and the fact that even Hvitserk had now left him.
I couldn't stand it. The way Ubbe was being humiliated by his youngest brother was horrific to listen to. He didn't deserve it.
Before I realised what I was doing, I yelled out to Ubbe, "Ubbe, wait!"Everyone stopped as I ran through the crowd, all eyes settling on me.
"What are you doing?" Ivar questioned as I left the crowd, finally reaching the brothers.
"You're wrong, Ivar. He's not alone." I said, looking over to Ubbe who still stood on the boat.
I ran onto the boat and pulled Ubbe into a hug.
"I'm coming with you." I told him with a smile. Ubbe smiled back. Finally it felt like I was doing the right thing.I looked back at Ivar and Hvitserk, both of them staring at me with hurt in their eyes. It was horrible to think that I had caused that but, somehow, my decision still felt right.
The boat was prepared to leave. I gave the youngest sons of Ragnar an apologetic look before stepping away and looking out onto the river. We set sail, all eyes still on Ubbe and I. The looks that I'd received from Ivar and Hvitserk were now engrained in my memory, refusing to leave. I had abandoned them both.
It was a long sail back to Kattegat. The ocean roared as we made our way home from the nightmare that was England. I'd sat with Ubbe, talking to him most of the way back. Somehow, I felt that choosing Ubbe over his brothers was my fate. A fate that I could not deny.
It was late at night a few days later when we finally made it back to Kattegat. Ubbe helped me off the ship as we walked to the Great Hall. It was quiet in Kattegat and I noticed so many changes had been made. Lagertha had heavily fortified the town while we had been gone. Ubbe pushed open the doors to the great hall and we walked through.
For the first time in months, my eyes met with those of Lagertha. Her blue eyes shone from the throne of Kattegat and I smile spread over each of our faces. I couldn't stop myself. Next thing I knew, I'd run over to the queen and embraced her in a hug.
She made both Ubbe and I at home as we told her, Astrid, Torch and Margrethe everything that had happened in England since we had gone.
