Reggie was many things. He was great at all sports, he was a great bartender at the speakeasy, he was an academic achiever, and he was a great looker. Even better than great. He was hot. Everyone knew it. But, there was one thing he wasn't great at. That was getting his feelings across to people who he trusted the most.
You were the opposite of him. You were not good at sports. You couldn't mix drinks to save your life. You didn't have a cocky attitude. Most of the time. You didn't think of your looks much. You didn't think you were great looking or hot. Sure, you just a good in school as Reggie was. You were friends with some of the more cockier people in school so it was easy to hide behind. You were shy and laid back. You just wanted a knight to come rescue you from your incredibly mundane life. Until Veronica Lodge has an all secluded party in her speakeasy for her close friends.
"Wear something sexy," Cheryl says from behind you. "Maybe you will finally get laid." Veronica nods towards Cheryl in agreement.
"Cheryl," You gape. "It's a secluded party. Only close friends remember? Last time I checked, all of our close friends were in relationships."
"Who knows," she shrugs. "I say red." She flips her hair and smiles wickedly. "It looks great on everyone and it will definitely wash out those split ends."
"Yeah, there will be plenty of eligible men there for you," Veronica smiled. "I may have went a little out of the inner circle. Not by much, but enough."
You roll your eyes, "Thanks. I think I'm just gonna go simple. How about this? It will bring out my eyes."
"Suit yourself," Cheryl sighed. "I don't know why you asked me for advice if you weren't gonna take it." You gave her a look. "Alright, let's see. Black skinny jeans... Nice. I think you should top it with this red tank top. It's hot and low cut. Not something that I would wear to this party, but..."
"Let us dress you," Veronica moaned. "It will be fun! You will look great!" The two girls give you pleading smiles and you sigh giving in. "Yes! Aright just sit here." The two girls raid your closet for the perfect outfit. They stop on an old homecoming dress and smile widely. "This is definitely the one!"I know most people don't have dresses like these just lying around, but it's Riverdale lol. Everyone has expensive clothes in Riverdale.
"Guys, this is ridiculous," You call coming from your bathroom. "It's too much."
"No," Veronica said holding up a finger. "It's perfect. You look so great!"
"You do, Y/N," Cheryl nods. "Where have you been hiding this body?" She looks you up and down. "You look so beautiful. I think you will definitely be meeting your prince tonight."
"Is this really gonna be that kind of party?" You sigh looking at yourself. "Like for real?"
"Of course it is," Veronica laughs. "It's my party isn't? If my parents have taught me anything, it's how to throw amazing parties."
"Fine," You laugh. "What shoes?"
"These black ones," Cheryl hands you a pair of heels. "Now, I must go prepare myself for the party of the week. Tootles."
"Bye Cheryl," you and Veronica laugh. "Now, Y/N,let's get to the La Bonne Nuit. We have guests already waiting."
"Hey, V," you stop her for a second. "Isn't this gonna be weird? Archie is bringing Josie..."
"Please," Veronica laughs. "I am fine with them being together. I have had the best time working on myself and I invited a great friend from New York."
"Better than Nick?" You laugh hopefully.
"Oh of course," she nods. "No need to worry, darling Y/N." She pats a hand on your chin. "He's super adorbs and has chin dimples for days."
"Sounds great, V," you laugh. "Let's go. One question though... How are we getting there?"
"A companion and loyal friend of both of ours, Reggie Mantle, our knight in shining armor," She smiled motioning to the black beauty in front of your house. "Let's go."
"Ladies," he gives his signature flirtatious smirk. "Your chariot awaits."
"Reginald," Veronica smiled fondly.
"Hey Reggie," you smile. You weren't extremely close with the jock, of course you grew up together... but he was popular and flirtatious. You were the shy girl who hid behind her spontaneous friends.
"Hey Y/N," he nods. "You look hot."
"Reg," Veronica rolled her eyes. "You have no manners. Come on now." She eyed the two of you and raised an eyebrow.
"Oh my goodness," Betty gawked as you walked towards her and Jughead. "You look great. I've never seen you in something like this."
"It's an old homecoming dress," you shrug with a blush. "Thank you."
"I am gonna go mingle a little," Veronica says. "Everything is open to you. Have fun see you later."
"You really do look great," Jughead said with a smile. "A little confidence is hidden in your smile, right Betty?"
"Oh of course," Betty nods with a smile. "Look there's Archie and Josie. Hey, you guys look great. Are you singing tonight?"
"No," Josie laughed. "Just here with Archie."
"Well it's gonna be a fun party," Jughead chuckled. "Full of New Yorkers and other people we don't know."
"Oh Jug," Archie shook his head. "Y/N? You look great!"
"Thanks," You nod looking at your feet. "I think I'm gonna go, Erm, get a drink." They all nod as you walk away to the bar. "Can I get something sparkly? I need some bubbly greatness."
"Here," the bartender laughed. "Have a glass of champagne. It's sparkly." You thank him taking a sip and offer him a thankful smile. "I'm Ben."
"Y/N," you nod. "Do you know Veronica?"
"Oh no," he laughed shaking his head. "I just work for the catering company. You don't exactly look like the kinda girl to know Miss Lodge either."
"We are friends," You laugh. "I love her to death."
"Who wouldn't. This party is great," he says looking around. "Never seen a big party in a small town like this."
"It's a Lodge thing," you say. "You'd think that there be a knight in shining armor around the corner, but..."
"It must suck. Being around her," he said. "She seems like a real bitch and she's gorgeous."
"I don't mind her," You say giving him an eyebrow. "She's actually extremely nice and giving."
"Doesn't seem like it," he shook his head.
"Yeah," you say slowly getting up from the stool. "I gotta go..." You search for your friends in the packed room.
"Oh there you go too," he laughed shaking his head. "People these days can't take constructive criticism." You nod slowly again.
"Y/N," Reggie places a hand on your back. "Is something wrong?"
"Yeah? Y/N?" Ben says throwing a towel over his shoulder.
"Back off bro," Reggie held a warning hand up. "Y/N?"
"I'm fine," You shake your head. "He's just a dick." Reggie chuckled a little as he ushers you to a nearby table. "You don't have to spend time with me."
"What?" He laughed.
"You don't have to spend time with me. I mean I can go find Betty or Cheryl," you say again.
"You don't wanna spend time with me?" He asked hurt with a laugh. "I wanna spend time with you. Besides it looks like all of your friends are preoccupied." He gestures to Cheryl and Toni who were deep in a conversation with each other across the room. Cheryl puts a hand on Toni's shoulder. You see Jug and Betty dancing together along with Josie and Archie. And then you see Veronica with a guy laughing.
"It seems they are," You nod awkwardly.
"We don't get to talk much," he says breaking your odd silence. "There's always something going on and you are always busy with tutoring."
"You know I tutor?" You laugh taking a sip of your drink. "How?"
"Well, I see you at the library with a few of our students," he explains. "One of them was a teammate of mine. So I asked."
"You asked about me?" You raise an eyebrow.
"Of course," he nods. "We hang out together and I wanted to know what you were into now. The last time we had a real conversation, we were in fifth grade." You laugh a little thinking about your fifth grade graduation.
"Well you had your growth spurt and became Mr jock jackass," you explain. "Didn't think you even remember my name."
"Oh, I didn't," he jokes. "I had to look you up in the yearbook." You roll your eyes. "Joking. Of course I remember you. You are the one who stood up to me during the seventh grade science fair. And the one who talked Principal Weatherbee into giving us that field trip to the Smithsonian. And, you were the one who first stood up for me in second grade."
"Second grade?" You ask.
"Yeah. I hade a broken arm and everyone was making fun of me because I couldn't do anything. So, you stood up during recess and said that I was cool because I had a cast. And said everyone else were losers," he chuckled. "Real hero."
"Oh my god!" You gasp. "I forgot about that. I can't believe I actually stood up in front of everyone like that. I could never do that now."
"I don't see why not," he said. "You are incredibly smart and..." he trails off as you take another sip of your drink.
"And?" You whisper.
"You're beautiful," he said and you let your mouth fall open. Reggie Mantle was calling you beautiful. You. You had thought about the other girls he had been with and you couldn't even compare yourself to them. But, here the two of you were and he was calling you beautiful and smart. "Y/N? Can we go outside? For a minute, I promise I won't try anything." Unable to find words, you just nod and follow him out.
"Reggie," you start. "You.."
"Wait... I know it probably sounds really stupid of me to even say this. It makes no sense at all and honestly it's kinda cliche... But here it goes. Y/N, I think you are gorgeous and extremely smart. I love your smile that you try to hide behind your hand. I love the way you secretly show that you know everything. I love the way your eyes shine when someone gives you a compliment. I know it's weird that I notice these things because we never talk. But, I have always been so... infatuated with you. You never throw yourself in the spotlight. You try your best to stay out of it. But, I see when someone recognizes you. You have a glint of pride in your eyes. I see you at all of these social gatherings that Veronica and the others throw, and you take care of everyone. You listen to us all and pay attention to every little detail. I haven't had the nerve to tell you," he stops to take a breath. "Which doesn't make sense because you know, I am great with girls."
"Is there an ending to your biography?" You laugh. "That isn't about how great you are?"
"Yeah," he nods. "Sorry, Erm, I wanted to know if you would go out with me? Like, just the two of us."
"You are asking me out?" You ask holding back a smile. "Why? I mean, you are you and I am me."
"And? You're great," he said. "I am great. I think we'd make a great couple."
"You are so cheesy," You giggle looking at the sky. "Honestly, I thought you were better at this."
"I usually am," He laughed. "Come on, Y/N, let me be your knight in shining armor?"
"Fine," You laugh. "On one condition..." He raises an eyebrow. "I get to wear your letterman's jacket. I get cold easily."
"Deal," He said. "Would it be too soon for me to kiss you?" You shake your head and his fingers trail your jaw. Your heart beats out of your chest as you feel his breath on face then his lips on yours. You slowly lean into to him, letting him take control and it was like fireworks went off inside your body. You felt the electricity in his touch and didn't want it to end so soon. "Let's get back inside. Veronica is probably looking for us."
You nod as he laces his fingers with yours letting a blush rise back to your face. You look at the ground for a second and he reassured you with a chaste kiss on your forehead before he leads you back to the party.
"Oh my cuteness!" Veronica smiled as the two of you find her. "I am so proud you finally asked her out, Reg."
"You talked to Veronica?" You tease and he shrugs. "So, where is chin dimples?"
"He is off with some of his frat brothers," she waves off in a the other direction. "Doing business. I propose that we get a slow song on. I will grab my boa and you will have yours. It will amazing and after we will all gather at the bar for celebratory drinks."
"I should tell you that there is a cocky bartender who gives off real J.D vibes," you warn. "He seems like the kinda guy who wants to blow up the place."
"We can handle him," Veronica smiled. "Now, let's go get the DJ."
