"Y/N," Cheryl smiled warmly. "Can I ask you something?" You nod at your friend.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like if JJ were still alive?" You look at her her for a moment, not knowing how to answer.
"All of the time," you sigh. "I still dream of him, at night. Of his embrace and his smile. I miss every day."
"Me too," she said. "Sometimes I just don't know how I can go on, without him."
You grab her hand, "you go on because he wants you to. Because, he wouldn't want you sitting here sad. He wants you to live a beautiful, better life. I'm sure he's so happy you met Toni." She smiles sadly, which you return. "He wants you to look over the babies."
"Do you resent him, for having relations with Polly? Getting her pregnant and wanting to run off to have the twins?" She asks.
"I did," you answer quietly. "But, not anymore. I love Jason and I don't want my memory of him to be anger. I'm glad Polly had the twins, a part of JJ lives in them. He got Polly pregnant before us anyways. There's nothing to be mad about there, he always told me that he never loved her as much as he loved me. I believe that, I have to."
"I'm sorry he never told you," she said. "I think he didn't have the heart and he wasn't thinking clearly."
"I know," you say. "He was so compassionate and if I knew Polly was pregnant before he passed, I would've told him to take her and go somewhere. That's what I would've wanted for him."
"I wish he was still here, maybe you guys would be reconnected. Maybe you would be together and thriving," she said. "I never like Polly much, she drug him along in her craziness. But you were different. You always made sure things were okay. You made him smile so wide and laugh like no one was around. I loved Jason the most when he was around you."
"Thanks," You smile. "We should get to class. A long day of testing ahead." That memory came to you as you stood in the burned ruins of Thornhill. Her words made you think about him, unlike all of the times before. His smile, the glint in his beautiful eyes, the way he laughed at the stupidest things. When he would meet you at the door every time you came, a smile on his lips.
This time wasn't as cheerful, the house was in ruins and now made of charcoal. There was barely any sign of Jason anymore. His room barely held up in the fire, a few trophies from sports and the remnants of his book shelf. You couldn't get up to his room anymore though, as the roof finally caved in. You had nothing that smelt like him anymore. The jacket you had only smelt like you're closet and your perfume. You came here once a week, trying to feel him again. You were never able to go far. But, you pushed through the rubble into the main room. Painting were gone leaving broken frames. You managed to wipe a few things away and find a picture of Cheryl and Jason. It was covered in ash and the smoke ruined it, but you could still make out his smile. You ran your fingers over it gently. You could see the warehouse in the distance. You never had the courage to go in there. Not after seeing the tape of Clifford Blossom as he beat and killed his son in the basement of the Whyte Wyrm. Somewhere else you couldn't take yourself. You wondered if the rope still hung in the barn. If it still had Clifford's presence in there. Maybe he was doomed for eternity. Hanging himself over and over. Or in the basement of the Whyte Wyrm killing his son. Perhaps that wasn't the worst things he's ever done, in his own mind that is. Maybe he lives in his childhood leaving his brother. Whatever it is was, you wished him the worst. He took the love of your life away, you'd never forgive him. Not even in death. Thoughts of Jason were racing in your mind, guilt overwhelmed you as you pushed yourself further.
You got to the kitchen, your favorite place in the entire house. This is where you always would end up on a Sunday afternoon. Cooking something up for the home. This is where you dreamed you'd teach your kids to cook. Where you and Jason would go to war with powdered sugar and flour. Where you shared your first kiss, when he caught you by surprise. It was all ruined of course, your dreams and the memories. A creaking brought you back to reality as you spun around. Mace ready.
"Hello?"
"Look I've got mace and I will use it." You swore you heard a laugh. "This is not funny!"
"Y/N?" A voice asked. Familiar voice at that, it made you freeze. "Oh my god, Y/N." He came into sight and you stopped breathing. It couldn't be true. You seen his body, you seen his dad kill him. But here he was. Standing and breathing and even smiling. He took another step closer and you took one back.
"I don't know what's going on here but stay back. I am obviously going through some type of delusion. You are not real, you're dead. I seen it," you say. "So stay back."
"Y/N I'm not dead. I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere. Please, put the sprayer down and I'll explain everything to you." He rose his hands. "Please, Babe."
"Prove who you are."
"Okay..." His hands still raised as he got closer. "Okay, when I asked you to Pop's I used an extremely cheesy line that we swore would never be said again... It was... I know I'm not Daddy material but you can still meet me at Pop's, right?" You still had the mace pointed towards him. "Okay, I know about the little scar on your spine and the time you tried bleaching your hair but it turned this awful highlight yellow orange color. Or when we had our first kiss right here in this kitchen. We were making those distrusting orange cookies and you were going on and on about getting the ratios exactly right. I had never been so turned on by someone talking about math. I remember when I told you that I loved at homecoming. And I remember the last time I seen you, we had this stupid argument over Carry Stein. I told you I loved you and I had to go to bed. I didn't decided until that night that I was going to get Polly. Only because we talked about this movie you seen. It made me think. I had to see her and get her out. I'm so sorry I didn't say goodbye."
"This cant be real."
"It is... Look, I was dropped off at some boarding school. They had strict lock down rules. No in. No out. No WiFi or phones. No mail. It was a prison basically, my dad paid them to not let me do anything. They got a month salary, I guess they stopped getting their cut because they threw me out. I don't even know how long I was in there. I came here and found this house all burned up and you," he explained. "You've got to believe me."
"I can't breathe right now. None of this makes sense," you say lowering your weapon. "This only happens in tv shows and movies."
"I know," he said. "But I am telling your the truth. What day is it?"
"August third," you said.
"That's not bad then. Only a month."
"No," you say. "It's been a year."
"A year?" He asked and you nod. "The baby?"
"Babies," You swallow. "They are beautiful. No thanks to Polly. She went insane and joined that farm you found. Except it's actually a cult that harvests organs for Evelyn who isn't Edgar's daughter. It's a long story."
"Babies... What are their names?" He asked.
"Well, I guess legally, Juniper and Dagwood. Though your mom got Dagwood and calls him Jason Junior. Juniper is with Alice, who recently made it back from being undercover at the farm," you explain. "Everything went to shit here, Jason. It's not the same town you left."
"I didn't leave," he reminded you. "But, do you think... You can take me to see them?" You furrow your brow. "To see the twins, I mean."
"Of course. Maybe you should change first though," you say. "Your clothes aren't child friendly. Maybe I can borrow some of Reggie's clothes."
"Reggie, How is he?"
"He's with a girl named Veronica who used to date Archie."
"What about Betty?"
"She's with Jughead."
"How did all of this happen?"
"You died and they all tried to find out what happened to you. They thought they did," you say. "While we are on the subject..."
"We never left the subject."
"Right well... When we were all trying to figure things out... We found this book," you explain. "A playbook. Was I in it?"
"No," he said. "I never but you in it."
"Do I take that as a compliment?"
"You should," He said. "I never put you in it because I cared too much too. You were more to me than a book of points to rack up. I honestly regret every name I ever put in. But, if you were in it. I would never forgive myself for that. I was also
terrified that Reggie would've killed me if you did go in it."
"Okay."
"Do I get to ask you a question?"
"Sure."
"Do you hate me? For going to leave with Polly?"
"No... I did once, but I realized it's what I would've told you to do."
"What happened to my house?"
"All I will say is Cheryl burnt it down. I think the rest you should hear from your mom or Cheryl," you
Sigh. You looked at his face before getting into your car. He was thinner and tired looking. You never thought about what you would say if he did come back. If he wasn't dead. You never thought of how you would feel. But, you didn't know how you felt. Shocked and confused of course. But mostly overwhelmed. He climbed in next to you and you couldn't believe it. You wanted to kiss him, but you couldn't. You had no right to and neither did he.
"Reg?"
"What's up?" Your brother comes down the steps and freezes. "Did I just walk down the time line? What the hell?"
"Reggie calm down. I already freaked for both of us," you explain. "He will explain everything to you." And Jason did, he even explained his experience at the ward. Reggie pulled you up to his room and shut the door.
"Are you okay?"
"I don't know."
"Where did you find him?"
"Thornhill."
"Thornhill? I thought you stopped going there months ago."
"I lied but that's not what this is about. I think he should be able to see his children. Even if one at a time. And, I can't get in the way of that. You know? Right now that's all I can think about. Because if I go too far... I just. I missed him and if this is all I get. Then, that's what I want to think about." He nods and pulls you into a hug. "It's just hard. He's been alive this entire time and no one found him."
"I know, let's get him clothes okay? I'll go with you to Penelope's." You nod and he grabs a Bulldog shirt and sweats that he doesn't fit into. "Give these to him, I've gotta call Veronica."
"Here, these are too small on Reggie. If the shirts too thin, I have that jacket. The Bulldog track zip up," you say. "I can give it back."
"No, this will be perfect." He wasn't as cocky as he used to be. He was kinder. You showed him to the bathroom so he could change and Reggie grabbed his keys to drive. "Where is my mom and Cheryl staying?"
"Cheryl doesn't stay with your mom," Reggie said. "She was emancipated and got Thistle house. Your mom stays at a... club."
"Club?"
"She owns a woman... domination club," you say. "It's super complicated." He nods and leans his head against the window. And through the mirror he looked like the same Jason you remembered. You pulled your phone out and sent a quick message to Cheryl and Betty to come and bring Juniper.
You knocked on the door, "Penelope. It's Y/N." You knock again. "I have someone you might want to see."
"What?" She answered and her face looked as white as her shirt. "Jason? Oh my boy." She cries and threw her arms around her son. "How?" She held his face. "You are alive."
"Hey mom," he wrapped his arms around her and you realized you never told him what happened with his mom.
"JJ," You say quietly. "Dagwood."
"Mom, I came to see my son," he said and she nods opening the door.
"He should be napping," she said but he's around the corner. "Y/N, can I please speak to you?" She pulled you aside. "You didn't tell him?" You shook your head. "Why?" You shrug. "Well, thank you. I know I'm not the best parent but I do love my children in my own way. He's my son and I want to be in his life."
"I didn't do it for you," you say. "I did it for him. He's been through hell, Mrs Blossom. I want him to meet his children and have a good day back. I don't want to hurt him. But, someone will tell him. If you don't tell him everything, I will. So please, tell him."
"Fine. But, still thank you for loving my son so much," she said. "He deserves you."
"Also, Mrs Blossom, I want to be there so you don't spread lies," you said. "Remember that I have every paper that was released and I can get police reports."
She tightened her jaw, "fine I will tell him." You smile sweetly before going into Jason Jr's room. Jason stood over the crib staring at the sleeping baby. A sad smile on his face as he ran a finger over the baby's face.
"JJ," You knock. "Are you okay?"
"He's so big already," he said and you nod. "How old?"
"He's almost a year," you explain. "In October."
"Do you see them a lot?" He asked.
"I don't come see your mom... But, I see Juniper all the time and when he lived with Betty I seen him all the time too," you explain. "I hate their names though." He chuckled. "They have your eyes."
"They do?"
"Yeah and he smiles, he looks just like you," you say. "He really is Jason Jr."
"I want to hold him," Jason said. "Am I allowed?"
"I mean, he is your baby. But, I would try really hard to not wake him up. If you do, there will be hell. When you pick him up, cradle his head and body like this." You show him. "And don't move too fast. You have to be calm and confident. He will sense if you're scared."
"Okay..." he did as he was told and lifted him from the crib. "He's so precious."
"I know," you said looking over his shoulder. "I've missed him so much."
"Why haven't you come to see him?"
"I think your mom wants to explain that," you said quietly. "He's waking up." The baby stirred and opened his eyes. "He might cry because he doesn't know you." Jason nods but the baby doesn't cry he stares and he even smiles. He can tell that Jason was his dad. "Hi Daggy, Hi! You look so happy today!" You coo. "This is your Daddy."
"He likes you," Jason murmured still staring in awe at the baby. "He likes me..."
"He does," you say. "Your his dad. He knows that."
"How?"
"Maybe its a bond thing. Or an instinct," you shrug. "Maybe he's just open to new people."
"Is Juniper like this?"
"No... Juniper is all Cooper and loud. She has Cheryl's attitude."
"Of course," he chuckled. "When will I get to meet her?"
"They should be here soon," you say. "Right now, I think someone needs his diaper changed." He looked at you and you laugh. "I'll do it, calm down." You take him and lay him on the changing table. "Now, I will tell you everything I am doing... First you gotta keep him happy. If not, well that's a mess.... You unbutton this onesie. Then undo the diaper. This is where you become careful times a thousand... You want to slowly open the diaper and take a wipe and clean everything. I mean everything. Then you will pull the diaper out and throw it out. Take a new diaper open it and slide it under his butt. You need to make sure you hold his legs the right way. Add diaper cream, this will help keep the rash away. Add some baby powder for moisture. And lastly, you will put the front down and make sure the diaper is tightly closed but still breathable."
"That was a lot to follow, next time will you help?" He asked. And all you could process was next time. There will be a next time. "Y/N?"
"Oh sorry, yeah I will help you," you explain lifting Dagwood up and to your chest. "You're my favorite boy, aren't you? You're my favorite little boy in the entire world!" You smile and bounce him. "You are my favorite little baby boy!"
"Cheryl is here," Reggie called and you hear him mutter something close to thank god then a swear word.
"Y/N? Is my mother holding you hostage? Why are you here?" Cheryl called and you roll your eyes but laugh. "Oh Y/N? Mother where is she?"
"I'm in here, Cheryl," you call. "Come calmly."
"What are you doing here?" Cheryl asked coming in. "JJ? Oh my god! Am I hallucinating?" You shake your head biting your lip. Tears were in her eyes as she met her brother in an embrace. "Oh my gosh! I can't believe you're here! I've missed you so much. You're finally home." You teared up yourself watching the embrace.
"Hey Cher, I've missed you too," he said in her hair as he held her tightly. "I've missed you so much." You wish that was how your meeting was. It made you want to hold him, but you couldn't. So you held the best boy in your life, Dagwood. You heard Betty come in and the chatter of Juniper and you heard Reggie explain to her what was going on.
"Do you wanna see Aunt Betty?" You ask coming into the living room. "Look who it is!" You hand him to the blonde. "And hello beautiful!"
"Are you sure about this?" Betty asked holding Dagwood close.
"Of course, I would never put these babies in harm. I love them," you say sadly. "I think he should know his children. They already grew so much without him. They were pushed onto the farm. I think this the best thing for them right now." She sighs but nods as you lift Juniper from her car seat. "Jason, I think there's someone else who wants to meet you." You hand him Juniper, who screamed as soon as she was in his arms. You have to bite back a laugh.
"What do I do?"
"Rock her and show her that you're not bad. You're her dad," Cheryl says. "Be her dad." She runs her hand on Juniper's head, comforting her. "She likes this. She also likes this." Cheryl blows a raspberry and Juniper stops crying. "You'll be fine. You just gotta ease in JJ."
"Where's Polly?"
"She's... She is gone," you sigh. "She got caught up in the farm. She went with them to ascend, which is suicide for all. We all tried to stop her, to stop them all. It didn't work."
"She's dead?"
"Yeah," you say. "I'm sorry, Jason, I know you wanted to marry her and have a family."
"I didn't want to marry her anymore," he said. "I just can't believe she did that. That I got her into that."
"No," Cheryl said. "She did that on her own. We got her away from the sisters. We helped her, and she went to the farm. There were so many signs. She didn't listen."
"Juniper," You say. "Hi beautiful, do you know who this is? I know they have showed you so many pictures, but this is your daddy. Yeah, this is him. Can you show him that pretty smile? Show him that smile." You play with her feet. "Can you smile?" You continue playing with her until she laughs. "Yeah! That's a beautiful laugh right?" You look at Jason.
"It is," he said. "Does she do it a lot? Laugh?"
"Of course," you say. "She loves Archie, he is still such a dumb ass."
"Archie, I heard he was in prison. Is that true?" He asked.
"False charges," you explain. "He's still good boy next door neighbor. Don't worry."
"Jason," Cheryl said. "Where are you staying?"
"I don't know," he sighed. "Here with mom."
"No," Cheryl said. "Absolutely not."
"I didn't tell him anything," you said. "I was waiting on you." She nods but explained everything to Jason, from the his death to Penelope trying to kill Betty, Jughead, Archie, and Veronica. She made sure to tell every detail of the things that happened to them and to her. It was the first time he heard of his father's death, but he wasn't upset.
"All of that happened?"
"Yeah."
"Where do I go from here? Things were easy before," he sighed. "What do I do?"
"Whatever you want, Jason," you say. "You have friends like Reg and I. You have Archie. I'm sure Cheryl can move something around in Thistle. We can get you situated."
"What about them?" He asked looking at the babies.
"We can fight to get them for you," Cheryl said. "TT knows some high up people."
"We can do this."
"I don't want to intrude," Jason said. "On any of you."
"You won't be, My parents aren't home often. Always away working. Car dealing and whatever. It's just Reggie and I. You can bunk with him. It will be like football camp," you said. "From there, we will get your death annulled. You'll get your money and you can get a home."
"I'll give you two a minute," Cheryl said standing running her hand across your shoulder as she went.
"Please stay with us," you said. "I don't care about the past we had if that's what is stopping you. You will not be intruding. Please, let us take care of you."
"I just... I have been trying to think of a way to say this. To ask this... Are you with someone else? Were you?" He asked. "I won't be angry, I understand. I just want to know."
"Jason."
"Look, I know this is strange. I get it. I love you, okay? I love you and I didn't stop. Not even when I was going to marry Polly. I still love you. I thought about you every day in that hell, Y/N," he said. "And, sure it will hurt to know, but I want to know."
"Jason, I wanted to say that I have not seen anyone since. I thought about you every day too, I went to your house. Burnt down and all, to feel like I was close to you. I seen your children every day since birth. That meant that I had to be around Polly a lot, but they're your children. They look just like you. And I hate Polly," you exclaim. "And, I know that it's bad to say 'hate' but oh my god!"
He laughed a little, "I know... So, you haven't seen anyone? And, how do you feel about me?"
"Jason, I love you," you laugh. "Why wouldn't I love you? I've loved you for so long."
"Then go out with again," he said, "Or continue? I don't know how this works. But please."
"Of course," you said. "I love you, and I never stopped. Even when I hated you for trying to leave and then getting yourself killed. Which I guess you didn't."
"Are you sure? I mean, I've got kids," he said. "Is that too much?"
"No," you laugh. "I've been through a lot in these past months. More than the two of these guys can give."
"Alright," he smiled and grabbed your face. He leant into your forehead and sat there for a moment. He kissed you softly and let a hand rest on your chin. "I love you so much."
"I love you too," you said. "And, I've missed you and I can't wait to help you raise these beautiful babies."
"Hey, I'm gonna bring Juniper home now," Betty said. "Umm... Are you two back together? What about Polly?"
"Polly's not here," he said.
"What does this mean for the babies?" She asked. "Are you going to take them?"
"I hope to," he said. "Betty, I need to apologize to you. All of the things that happened to Polly and to your family. I'm sorry, I know that words don't make up for it and actions do. Believe me, I will be trying to fix things. But, I want to start with I'm sorry."
"You're right. It doesn't fix things. My sister was locked away. She was alone and pregnant. You wrote in that stupid playbook how many points she was. It's disgusting."
"I know," he said. "And, I wish I could apologize to her as well. And tell her how proud I am to have her as the mother of my children. To tell her how much she means to me and that all of that shit in the playbook was wrong and stupid. I learned about toxic masculinity while I was away and I don't want to spread that. It only leads down."
"Betty, he just got back. He still has to find out where he's going to stay. He has to get back in school. Just give him time to show you he's sorry," you say. "Betty, he's been through so much."
"That doesn't make up for anything."
"I know," you agree. "People can change." You give her a knowing look. "People do change."
"Fine. But, I'm not letting my niece and nephew go with another off parent who's mentality is far from normal. They have been through too much," she said. "So you better get your shit together." He nods.
"Jason," you sigh. "I know, you think you are a ready for all of this. But, you have to ease into it. You can't put your problems on these babies. Okay?"
    "Okay."
"Just get better for them," you say with a hand on his face, but he was looking at them. "We don't live in a movie, okay? It will take time to get to a place that's healthy for them. That's all that matters."
   "Yeah."
"So, maybe we should go to the police. You need to tell them you're alive," you say. "We can do this together."
