The following morning, at exactly 08:00a.m, Klaus showed up to take Caroline for their date. To say that Liz was shocked when she opened the door was an understatement. She'd only ever let the hybrid into her home once, and that was for him to heal her daughter. Now here he stood with a gorgeous bouquet of marigolds.
"Klaus?" Liz said warily. "How may I help you?"
"Good morning sheriff," Klaus politely acknowledged. "I promise you I'm here with good intentions. I came to take Caroline out on a date."
Liz laughed. "That's very funny Klaus, now tell me what is it that you really want? "
"Mum!" Caroline exclaimed, rushing down the stairs. "There's no need to be o impolite." She turned to smile at Klaus. "Good morning Klaus."
"Good morning Caroline, you look stunning." He smiled, handing her the bouquet of flowers.
"Oh my gosh Klaus, these are my favourite right next to peach blossoms." Caroline swooned. "Thank you."
"You are welcome." Klaus said. "Should we take our live?"
"Caroline you can't be serious!" Liz exclaimed. "This is Klaus Mikaelson, the same guy who had Tyler bite you. You almost died because of him."
"Mum I am well aware of every bad thing his done, but I'm also aware of all the good. Yes I almost died because of him, but he came and saved me. He risked his own life getting me out of the school when Alaric trapped me there. He's not all bad, so please don't judge me like Elena is currently doing."
"Oh sweetie," Liz said looking a little more gentle. "I would never judge you, it's just sometimes I worry about you."
"Mum I'm growing up, you are going to have to let me at some point." Caroline said.
Liz sighed. "Alright, Klaus you have permission to date my daughter, but I am warning you, if you hurt her I will make running from your father for a thousand years look like a walk in the park."
Klaus swallowed, he suddenly had a healthy respect for Liz Forbes. "Of course Sheriff, but you should know, I would never ever hurt Caroline. I would truly be the devil's spawn if I took her light from the world."
"Good, well you kids carry on, Caroline I won't be home tonight, there are some cases at the station that I need to work on."
"Anything supernatural?" Caroline asked.
"I don't know yet, but for the past two days bodies are being found drained of blood, but no vampire bites or anything suspicious."
"I'll ask my hybrids to look into it too sheriff, lend a hand after all the trouble I've put you through." Klaus said.
"That'd be greatly appreciated Klaus," Liz replied.
"Well we'll go now." Klaus said leading Caroline to his range rover.
"Wow nice ride." Caroline commented as helped her into the passenger seat.
"Thank you." Klaus said flashing to the drivers side.
"So care to tell me where you are taking me?" Caroline asked as Klaus st a to drive.
"Why? Are you worried I'm trying to kidnap you?" Klaus teased.
"Not even, but want to know so that I know I'm dressed appropriately."
"Well it's a surprise so I won't tell you, however do not fret, you look perfect." Klaus said. "Like a queen."
Caroline blushed. "Why thank you."
The rest of the drive was comfortably quite until they reached the Mikaelson mansion.
"You're taking me to your house?" Caroline asked.
"There are some parts you haven't seen to this house before, like the backyard." Klaus said leading her through the back door to his house.
Caroline was amazed. The backyard looked exactly like the field Klaus took her on their first date when they were human.
"Nik, this is beautiful." Caroline marvelled.
Klaus' eyes widened. "Love did you just call me Nik?"
Caroline mentally cursed herself. "Uh yes, I've heard Rebekah call you that quite a number of times, and I like it."
"Why?"
"I feel like Klaus is the big bad hybrid that you show to all your enemies whereas Nik is the person you've shown me ever since we met. If you don't like it? I won't call you that anymore."
"No, I like it. It's just I'm not used to anyone outside of my family calling me Nik, hearing you call me Nik feels nice."
Caroline smiled warmly. Looks like sensitive human Klaus was still somewhere in there. "So what's so special about this?" She asked changing the subject.
"When I was human there was this field I use to runaway to whenever I was avoiding my father. I always found peace there." Klaus explained. "I actually learnt how to make paint in that same field using berries. Unfortunately when I came back, I realised that that field was replaced by the Mystic Grill."
He led her towards a spot where a classic picnic blanket was laid out with a single marigold in a vase. A picnic basket was in the middle with two champagne glasses.
"Champagne?"Caroline asked.
"Well I like to consider it our thing." Klaus smirked.
"You are a horrible influence," Caroline teased, taking a sit.
Klaus laughed and opened the picnic box producing a blueberry tart, some cupcakes, and a couple of Caroline's favourite fruits.
Caroline moaned looking at all delicacies in front of her. "Where have you been all my life?"
"I'll take that as you liking all of this. So what would you like to eat first?"
"The blueberry tart. It looks mouth watering." Caroline said.
"Should you really be having dessert first?"
"Picture this," Caroline said dramatically. "If I don't eat my dessert first an earthquake could happen and destroy us all. I would then die not knowing how this pie tastes."
"Hmm," Klaus nodded. "That is an interesting notion. I've never thought of it like that, Love."
"Well consider me your lifesaver." Caroline said smugly. "Nik can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Why do you call me and every single woman you meet Love? I was under the impression that it was a term of endearment?"
"Jealous are we?"
Caroline huffed. "Hardly. All I'm saying is as your girlfriend you should have a better term than something you call even the women you want to kill."
"And that there is why I am in love with you." Klaus said unconsciously.
"Caroline gasped. Before they agreed to give each other a chance she had thoughts that maybe the reason Klaus hadn't killed her is because he was in love with her, but she never actually confronted him.
I love you too she thought.
"What was that?" Klaus asked.
"What was what?"
"I thought I heard you say you love me. It's probably in my mind and now you are probably going to make a run for the hills."
Caroline's eyes widened. "Klaus, I did say that, but in my mind. How did you hear me?"
"I might have the answer to that!" A voice said from behind them causing them to jump.
I wonder who interrupted Caroline and Klaus' date. So who thinks they can guess how Klaus can read Caroline's mind? If you think you know drop it in a comment😘
