IVAN:
“You’re not happy for me are you?” Abbi said disappointed as she rose to her feet
“Ab…Abbi I’m…”
“No need Ruf it was written clearly on your face” she picked her purse and was about to leave the table.
Tears sprang to Rufi’s eyes “I’m sorry Abbi, answer I’m happy for you and Samuel”
Tears rolling down her eyes Abbi asked “Then why did you look so sad, why aren’t you as happy as everyone here” she wiped her tears away. she accused "if anyone should be happy for me then it should be you!”
And if anyone is to blame that would be me. The look that Rufi had said something like she expected me to have proposed before Samuel did to Abbi.
Every other person in this room might have mistake that expression for not being happy for Abbi but I know better. I might have given her reason to doubt our relationship this last week but I couldn’t help. Every time the phone rang I always think it’s the jewelry company calling that they might say something to make Rufi know I’m proposing. Whenever the door bell rings I believed they came to deliver the ring early even when I know it wasn’t going to be delivered ‘till this morning.
My playing snoopy might have made her doubt and now her friend thinks she isn’t happy for her.“I’m …….” Rufi was cutoff
“Hey little sister” Steven called from the door way.
All attention snapped to them in a second and I saw Alex looking as if he’d seen a ghost following his gaze I found him looking at neither Rufi nor Ana-Blaire but at Maria who also looked pale.
“Don’t tell me ……” Maria spoke in a whisper “Ruf?, Alexandro Brown?” she shook her head.
“Honey?” Victor called “are you ok?”
“Rufi, is this your father?”
She gave her a serious look before answering “sperm donor? Yes, otherwise? No”
“Why didn’t I guess this before ……. Rufi….. This bastard” she pointed at Alex who shot back as if she touched him “is the one who deceived my mother. He is my biological father!”
Biological father!

RUFI:“I’m so sorry Ruf I never thought that bastard is also your father, I didn’t , if I had I swear I wouldn’t have showed up”
“Shush” I shook my head “please stop this guilt ride ok”
“How did you recognize him” Mum asked “From everything I’ve heard your father never stayed with you”
“Hmm-mm” she swallowed “the story goes way back before I was born, according to Mama, her daddy had a business that brings him to Nigeria once in three years. On this particular year she decided to follow him. It was difficult to convince him because although he conducts business with blacks he still was a racist. He believed she might get involved with one since she was still young, 22."
She stood from the sofa and went to the window. “Grandfather usually spends seven to ten months on those trips. During the second moth she met Alex a young business man who came to a seminar Grandfather attended, she was twenty- two, he was thirty.
Thirty? Three years after Steve’s birth, I looked at mum and saw the same thought cross her mind.
“Mama thought he wasn’t married so she did everything to protect their relationship. It was during the sixth month of her stay she realized she was pregnant. Grandfather got furious when he found out the father is black. He ordered mum to get rid of the baby but she refused saying; I had the right to my own life. Grandfather destroyed all her travelling document and told her she was no better than a coon.
