IVAN:

Rufi looked like she'd seen a ghost and Ms Nelson has gone pale.

"R-R-Rufina"

"No" she denied, shaking her head"No"

I looked between them lost "What is going on? " I asked no one in particular.

No one moved. The tension in the room grew so thick I could cut it.

"Mama?"

Ms Nelson fell against the table at Ana-Blaire's word.

"T-T-The P-preg-nancy " she turned to Ana-Blaire.

Rufi shoved Ana-Blaire behind her "What are you doing here?" Her voice was dead.

Ms Nelson open her mouth shut it. Once. Twice.

She knows about the pregnancy?

I looked from one face to another and like thunderbolt I realized I was looking at the same face on three different people. Carbon copy.

This couldn't be. Ms Nelson was Rufi's mother? How come I didn't notice the now glaring resemblance before.

"I asked what you are doing here?!"

"I-I-I" Ms Nelson shook her head as tears ran down her cheek "I'm sorry"

"you're sorry?" She laughed " I don't think so"

Ms Nelson took one step closer.

"Don't come near me!" She snarled

"Rose" she cried

"Don't come closer!" She screamed.

There's more to this than meet the eye. Definitely more.

I stepped in between them "please leave?" I made sure Ms Nelson got my unspoken message.

She swallowed back tears and nodded her agreement. She picked her purse, wiped her face, looked at Ana-Blaire, smiled and left.

"Mama"

Rufi fell in front of her baby and cried.

I let them be. This they needed to do alone.

But   Ms Nelson? Brown? I know she's divorced. Still, the Ms Nelson I know wouldn't kick her child out if her home. I had to get to the bottom of this. Fast.
...............

Rufi went on like nothing happened but, I could see her eyes were hunted. Until i told her otherwise she must have concluded the family changed name to sever all tiles with her, now she was hopeful, hopeful her mother had lived her all the while and had ignored her for a reason.

That reason was one of the things I came out to understand. To understand the why's. To take away the broken heart of my woman. To answer her questions.

" I was never a mother figure to Rufina, I love her, heaven knows. I never would have allowed Alex had I known" Ms Nelson spoke and I listened not interrupting.

She had married her husband-Alex Brown-against better judgment. He had no regard for the female gender, he only needed one for procreation.

When Ms Nelson found out she was having a baby girl she decided to ignore the child when born so her father would notice and hopefully love her, she never wanted her growing up without knowing her father's love.

By the time she realized Alex would never love Rufi it was late as her daughter saw her as cold. Isabella was the only Mother Rufi ever had.

"What happened that afternoon?"
