The atmosphere in the hospital was tensed, police were like ants clustered around sugar.
Callie had stayed by her brother all night, she stood to go check on Ana-Blaire but stopped abruptly when Ivan started spasming

“Rufi!, Rufi!” he gasped “Rufi!” he spasmed violently.

Callie held him with all her strength as she pulled the bell in panic. Ivan kept on fighting her hole while jerking .
A nurse ran in and ran back out when she realized the situation was beyond her control

With a final “Rufi no!” he went limp. Fear engulfed Callie for a few seconds before the pim-pim of the heart monitoring machine reassured her he lived.

The doctor came in then and asked her to leave. Being drain physically and emotionally from holding her brother make it impossible for her to stop her tears.
Her only brother was dying.

She’d be a fool not to acknowledge that Rufi’s absence triggered that reaction. She also feared something tragic happen to Rufi that Ivan had felt on a primitive level.

Were they hurting Rufi?

Teresa was playing her cards wisely as she had refused to leave the hospital yet. If Callie hadn’t heard her she would have thought her innocent. Teresa was staying back for news (which was not available).

The news not available also meant that Callie too was in the dark. No fuss though, as far as Ivan and Rufi are safe.

That was her only plea.

But with what happened she was frightened. Ivan might die of seizures or remain in coma for life. Either option appalled her.

He had to go back to the Ivan they all knew, the one who never gave up.

She prayed he won’t this time.

She feared he would

She called her husband.
“Agapi?”

“Chris” she cried

“Cal are you ok?”

“No”

“Rufi still missing" he stated a matter of fact.

“Yes” she affirmed anyways “Ivan had a seizure, he is dying!"

“What?!”

“I don’t know love, I’m confused” she spoke in anguish.

A pause.
“I’m coming to Nigeria”

“Chris!” she did not see that coming “are you crazy?"

“Yes”

“Christen stop, I’m being serious here, you can’t leave your patients without a doctor, it’s not ri…….

“I’m on my way Cara, you can’t change my mind”

“Cchrrissss!”

“Love you” he cut the connection.

“Hump!" Having a stubborn sibling did not make her learn. She married a bull-headed Dane.

* ******************************
He couldn’t explain what was going on neither could he explain the reverse in time. His brain seem blank except for one event, that strange and scary one, that was all he had.
His wedding day.

He stood beside his bride, a lady stood ten feet away from the speaking. What she said he did not understand but something compelled him to leave his bride alone, to get something by the communion stand.

Click!

A gun!

He jumped to save his bride from the gun but a force coerced him into staying in place.

A name he had no idea of came out of his mouth in great horror. “Rufi!”

His screams were drowned by the lady’s laughter.

The lady or a monster?

Her face alternated.

The lady one second.

A beast the next second.

The lady ….. a beast …… the lady ….. a beast……. He kept screaming “Rufi!” as the lady-beast shot the gun.

“No!” he groaned as his bride fell to the floor.

She was drowning in her own blood.

The hand restraining him let him go and he rushed to her side as the red pull grew bigger.

He was benumbed.

His bride was dying.

In his arms

He was watching helpless

Until finally.

She.

Died.

* ***************************************
“Where am I” Rufi beseech

Diana ignored her and sat on a chair across her.

“Diana please” she prayed her.

“Hmm” was the only reply she got.

Rufi told herself Diana would not kill her. Not yet so she asked a question she knew not to ask.
“How is Ivan?”

Diana’s head shot up at that question and surprise flickered in her eyes. She rose to her full length about 2 inch taller that Rufi and walked towards her with a deadly look.

“Watch it dimwit you don’t want me angry" her voice spelt doom.

Rufi swallowed in fear. Who ever said she was safe.

“I hope you’ve said your good-byes Rufi dear ‘cus even though I won’t kill you now eventually I will” she smile as if they were talking about the weather.

“I’d love to see the look on your face when I get married to Ivan. After my honeymoon you’ll die”

If Rufi wasn’t so scared she’d have laugh out loud.
A mock laughter that is.

She’d have laugh until her stomach hurt and Ivan would have to kiss it better -as it was a tradition already ‘cus she laughed until her stomach hurt most times.

It was different now though.
Her life was in danger and Ivan was in coma.

But still, Diana thought she stood a chance with Ivan?

If the condition of her death was her  'returning from her honeymoon' then Rufi was safe. ‘cus that honeymoon won’t happen.

Ivan would find her.
A sound came from somewhere. Someone, like laugh it was her. Rufi was laughing.
She couldn’t stop.

The look of mortification on Diana’s face was priceless. Rufi laughed until she feared she was going mad. Diana slapped her hard on her cheek “how dare you!”

“Sorry” she said tending her smarting cheek.

Diana was red with anger “I could end you right now”

Rufi sucked in a sharp breath.
“This” she swung the gun around “would do the job” she glared at Rufi “don’t tempt me”

The look on Diana said she meant her word.

Rufi had to remain alive.

For her family.

“here” Diana continued as though  they were best of friends. “I brought you food”

Rufi’s first reaction was a no, but she thought better. She needed her strength.

“thank you” she said instead.

“drink this” Diana held a bottle to her mouth when she was done eating.

Rufi looked unsure.
“come one Rufina, if I want to kill you there are better ways than poisoning”

Rufi drank the liquid and soon felt dizzy.
“I needed to do that for my own safety" Diana said.

The room was spinning fast …. Faster ……faster until……

Darkness.
