"Stand back," Stine ordered Shelly. He was holding Mary-Ellen's manuscript.

Shelly nodded and did what she was told. She hurried to Slappy and hugged him, and Stine and Slappy were surprised to see the condition that Mary-Ellen was in.

Scratched. Cut. Bruised. She was a complete mess.

"Wow..." Stine said softly.

"Dang. Did Shelly do that?" Slappy said to himself. "No wonder I love her. She is feisty."

Mary-Ellen coughed hard and rolled herself onto her stomach. She heard Stine and Slappy clearly and slowly tilted her head up. Stine took a step forward and held out her manuscript.

"N-no...please...Papa..."

"Sorry, Mary-Ellen," the writer apologized, even though that he was not at all sorry. "You, Wally, and Snappy had a chance, and you all blew it. Wally is back in his book, and I gave Snappy one more chance because he is really sorry for helping you in your evil and horrible plan to play on Shelly's grief."

"Papa...I have learned my lesson..."

"You should be ashamed of yourself."

"...I am not."

She would have grabbed her baby if Stine had not opened the manuscript in time.

"I will be back! I will be in your nightmares, Slappy!"

When all of her got sucked back in, Stine quickly shut the book and locked it.

"There," he said. "It is finally over."

Shelly let out a sigh of relief and scooped up Tamara and Avery.

Slappy smiled at Avery. "You know...she looks a lot like you and nothing like Mary-Ellen."
