Katie's POV

I had bravely decided to attend the party that night. I knew Niall would be there. I had planned to stay out of his way, and leave soon after midnight.

I put on an electirc blue dress. It was flowy and reached my knees, the back was covered with the chiffon fabric, and it had a v-neck. I put on black tights and black three inch booties. I flat ironed my hair stick-straight, and put on bronze-brown mixed eye shadow with black eyeliner, mascara and a muted red lipstick. The final touches were the jewelry; I slipped on the necklace, ring and charm bracelet Niall had bought me.

I put on my black trench and got my phone and left.

I got to Zayn's and everyone was there. I put on my smile as Eleanor came into view. "Cathleen! Oh my god!"

"Hey El!"

"How've you been?"

"I'm well, thanks."

"Well, I'll catch up with you tonight!" She said and walked away to Louis.

I puttsed around the house, talking to everyone, as all my friends from London were here. I talked to all the boys, Leena, Andy, Maz and a lot of others. I put on my happy face and tried to be happy, but I felt sad inside.

We turned to the plasma screen as Olly Murs came into view, singing Imagine by John Lennon. 2012 was almost over.

I thought about what an amazing and difficult year it had been. In a matter of months, I had met the love of my life, won the soccer championship, graduated high school, went on tour with the biggest boy band in the world, set up my best friend with Zayn Malik, gone to college, suprised my boyfriend on his birthday, and broke up with him. I lost the love I loved the most. The countdown began.

We all shouted. "5...4...3...2...HAPPY NEW YEAR!" The room exploded, and people threw confetti around. I downed a shot, as did most. We all laughed and celebrated, and the couples kissed.

Niall's POV

I looked across the room to Katie, who had on a forced smile. Her eyes, I could tell, were sad. She looked awkward, with everyone kissing. I watched as she got a beer, no glass, from the bar. She made her way to the back of the house. I followed her and she shut the door to the balcony behind her. I opened the sliding door and stepped out on the balcony.

"Shit! It's freezing!" I exclaimed.

"It's numbing. I can't feel anything out here." Katie said, and I got worried. She was sitting on a bare spot of the concrete railing, which was a foot wide, and no snow had fallen on it. I looked out onto London, the lights were bright and fireworks were sounding everywhere. Snow was falling everywhere, the snowflakes coating the sky.

"It's a beautiful view." I said, no response. "What. no champagne?" She let out a chuckle, and took another sip of her beer.

"It's a bit too refined for my taste at the moment. I just need a good pint." I nodded.

There was an awkward silence, and I broke it. "I read your letter." Her head snapped up and she stared wide-eyed at me.

"I'm really sorry, Niall. If it was too much, then I'm sorry. The letters were helping me not to have a panic attack or a breakdown."

"I loved them, they made me sad to know how terrible you've been feeling, but I liked it."

"Niall, I know I said I'd always be waiting, but sometimes, I just don't know anymore."

"The hell is that supposed to mean?" I asked. I thought we'd get back together tonight.

"It means, that our reactions told me too much. Maybe this life isn't for me. The traveling and the pressure. Maybe I'm meant for something else."
