A/n:
I know I usually put the authors note at the end and I will and you should read it because there is some important stuff in there but just a little note before the chapter: Charlotte was not throwing up because she was pregnant, she is not pregnant, she has not had sex with Josh or Brendan she is a virgin.
I felt as though I needed to clarify because I got a couple comments asking what if and I just need everyone to know she's still a virgin, I promise.
Recap (because of cliffhanger):
"Why did you leave me?" He changed the subject abruptly and although I knew that this conversation was inevitable and I knew what I had to say I suddenly found my mouth dry and I couldn't speak.
Chapter 36:
"Do you have any guesses?" I stood next to his bed speaking softly as I found my voice.
"It wasn't for the reasons you said it was." Josh's eyes remained glued to the sheets in front of him and he sat up in bed.
"Essentially it was, there are just parts of the story you don't know." I fiddled with my thumbs, Josh motioned for me to sit on the edge of his bed next to him.
"What is it?"
"Brendan knew." I paused looking to Josh's face for a reaction but I couldn't find a hint of even surprise in his face, whatever it was that he was feeling was being suppressed, "when I first moved here and we were separated, he heard us talking about us after I fell down the stairs and when we kissed at the Masquerade ball Connor saw and he told Brendan." I continued to explain the story.
"Does Connor know?" Josh gave me a look a deep concern.
"No, he thinks I have a crush on you." I looked away slightly embarrassed, I could see Josh's lips poke up into a smirk for a fleeting moment out of the corner of my eye.
"That's good." The light mood suddenly grimaced again as I continued to tell the story.
"Brendan called me, he asked me out and when I said no he told me that he knew everything and he also told me that if I didn't come back here that weekend and end it with you he would take our relationship to your family, the press and even the authorities. So I left." I finished with a deep breath looking to Josh who was showing great emotion in the moment. His eyes flamed with rage as he hands balled up into fists.
"I could kill him." He threatened in a low voice.
"Josh, it happened seven months ago and he had my best interest at heart, he just didn't express it well." I made an attempt to calm him.
"Are you okay with what he did?" I only managed to spark more anger in him as he spoke with rage dripping from his voice.
"No." I responded quietly, "but it happened and there's nothing we can do about it now."
"I know, I should've-"
"There's nothing you could've done," I cut his contemplations off, "that's why I didn't tell you at the time, you would've tried to do something."
"Because I love you." He furrowed his eyebrows taken aback at my objection.
"If there was anything I could have done to prevent what happened, I would have done it, but there was nothing."
"What about now? Is there something now?" Josh asked hope beginning to spark in his eyes, my heart felt heavy as I looked away from him.
"No," I paused letting out a breath, "I can't go back to California, he'd know."
"You don't have to, we could be together, I can come here." Josh took my hand as I remained staring at the wall, I let him hold it knowing I needed to take it away but not being able to bring myself to reject him like that.
