Chapter 25:

In my subconscious I heard muffled voices. Some were yelling some were quiet and others made no sound at all. I found myself slowly regaining consciousness as the voices became louder and I could make out Connor's frantic voice.

"I can't believe you would push her down the stairs!"

"I told you I didn't." Shot back the ever so calm voice of Josh. I wanted with a terribly passion to get up and let them know I was okay but couldn't seem to move, I could only hear for I wasn't fully conscious at this point.

"You're a monster and a liar." Connor muttered leaving the room rather loudly. I felt a warm hand on my own and I was in someone's arms.

"I'm so sorry." I heard Josh's voice whisper "I don't hate you, you're not a slut. I love you I promise just please come back to me." He continued sounding as if he was begging "I'll let you go, just please wake up." He muttered before I felt his lips on mine and finally forced my eyes open and fully came to.

"Josh." I tried to say but had lost my voice so it came out quietly.

"Charlotte!" He pulled me tightly into his embrace. "She's awake!" He yelled to the other room.

"Charlotte holy shit!" Connor dashed in and lifted me swiftly away from Josh's arms, my head spun with every movement."

"Connor I'm tired." I mumbled closing my eyes.

"No Charlotte stay awake, please don't let yourself fall asleep."

"Why not?" I asked feeling myself quickly fading.

"Im sacred," he whispered "Im scared of loosing you."

"I'll be fine I promise." I reached up and held his face with my hand before dozing off into sleep.

I woke up a few hours later on the couch my head feeling as though it weighed five tons. I moaned slightly feeling the pain of a thousand fires.

"Charlotte your awake!" Connor took a sharp breath in sounding relieved.

"Yes." I groaned, my head still throbbing I think I hit it hard going down the stairs.

"I will get you something for your head." He bolted into the other room.

"I'm sorry." I heard a second voice and startled turning around too quickly rattling my brains and needing to squeeze my eyes shut and out my head down. I looked up very slowly to see Josh laying wide awake on the couch with Brendan sleeping on the floor at his feet. I only looked at Josh for I couldn't think of anything to say. "Please say something." He begged.

"I have nothing left to say to you, I've said everything I need to." I replied with zero emotion sneaking it's way into my tone.

"Char,"

"My name is Charlotte to you now." I replied coldly.

"Charlotte please don't do this."

"I trusted you to never hurt me, and you betrayed me." I stated my voice quivering as tears began to trickle down my face. "I don't want to see you again for a while, please go home." I turned and waited for a response but one never came, I was only met with silence. For when I turned back Josh was gone as if he had never been there. As if I had never met him in the airport and wound up living with him, as if we had never been carelessly in love carrying on the charade that it wasn't wrong, because how could something so beautiful be wrong. It was wrong though because we fell in love and things that fall break. Now here we are. Broken.

I took a deep breath, these thoughts running through my brain, and then I let it go.

"Charlotte?"

"Yes."

"I brought you ice for your head."

"Thank you Connor."

"No problem doll face, Josh left you know."

"Did he?"

"Yeah."

"I hadn't noticed." I breathed out slowly my life fully falling into focus as my brains stopped bouncing around in my skull.

"Brendan's such an idiot." Connor chuckled.

"Why is that?"

"I can't believe he could fall asleep."

"He doesn't know me well enough to be concerned for my welling being, I would've gone to sleep to." I tried to laugh in return to Connor. He smiled his eyes still showing great concern for me.

"Do you feel like sleeping?"

"No."

"TV?"

"Sure, I'll be right back though." I left the room silently as Connor clicked on the television, and I scurried out of the house and sat on the porch staring at the stars lost in my thoughts, of what I had and what I lost, I felt as though when Josh and I were in love we could light up the night sky but now we were burnt out and collapsed fallen to earth looking up at our pieces. The stars reflected us back scattered among the darkness in places we could never reach, reminding us of what we had. And in the morning they would be gone.

I stood and began walking it wasn't cold at all, for spring had begun a while back, I walked for about five minutes before I reached the lake at the end of the road that Josh had taken me too once upon a time. As I approached the lake I heard unrest in the water and looked up to see what I could never have expected. Josh stood in the lake as if this was a dream, a beautiful dream where I would strip down and run to him. Forget everything that had previously occurred and run to him but his words rang too loudly in my head. I sniffed in and caught his attention accidentally.

"Charlotte?" his voice sounded painfully hopeful and I couldn't handle the situation I was being faced with so I turned around. My heart pounding out of my chest and filled with adrenaline I ran as fast as I could down the road, one foot after the other pushing myself faster and faster until I reached home and threw the door open proceeding to slam it shut and bolt it, I kicked off my shoes and bolted to the other room where Connor was still on the couch and Brendan asleep on the floor and launched myself upon Connor.

"Woah, are you okay?" he laughed as I tucked myself into the couch out of breath and heaving "you look like you've seen a ghost."

"I don't know." I stared blankly at the TV not even paying attention, not thinking about Josh, just staring and wondering if the feeling of pain in my chest would ever subside or would it instill itself forever like a tattoo, and never be gone.
