Chapter 37:

Good things are supposed to come to those who wait. So I did. I waited. Every second following the moment Josh drove away my heart beat faster as the end of the wait became closer, even if only by a second. I filled my time by enrolling in public school, I had friends but none could compare to Connor. He was the closest thing to family I had ever had, the days after he left for collage were lonely and even when surrounded by friends on any given Friday I still felt loss knowing I wouldn't go home and find him passed out on the couch with the television still on, he came home on break but it was only a short time before he left again. Those lonely days turned to months and the months to years, I can't seem to remember the days, only the moments. Time had no limit to the speed it would go, someday approached faster and faster. I had seen Josh here and there since he had left but it had all been very cordial between us, excusing moments when we would stare at one another from across the table to see how much we had changed and maybe a fleeting glance to the clock to remind the other that someday was coming. Now after all the time that had passed by since that morning after thanksgiving three years ago someday was here.

"Why?"

"I'm 18, I want to pursue acting, I know people in California, so that would place to do it don't you think?" I cocked an eyebrow at my friend Caroline sitting cross legged on my bed watching me pack my bags.

"Oh yes, I'm sorry I keep forgetting you have the honorable Hutcherson name backing you." She reached into my suitcase and drew out a pair of particularly sexy underwear and grinned at me.

"Put those down." I grabbed them and threw then back into the bag, "keep your hands to yourself." I sternly warned her laughing.

"Can I go with you and stay with Josh too and date Josh too." She stared off dreamily at my window.

"No." I responded deadpan, slight annoyance ringing in my voice.

"Why do you always get irritated when girls ask you about Josh?" Caroline chuckled at herself knowing just how to get under my skin. I had told no one, not even my closet friends of my past with Josh, or the possibility of my future with him. All they knew is that when the occasional girl would approach me and ask if I could set them up with Josh my reaction was anything but kind.

"I'm a person, not a link to people I know." I rolled my eyes grabbing my underwear back and throwing it in the bag.

"Why the sexy underwear?" She dropped the subject wiggling her eyebrows and brushing her dark hair away from her eyes.

"I'm eighteen years old, I'm entitled to have sexy underwear." I stated struggling to keep a smirk from creeping onto my face.

"Charlotte, never in my life have I met someone as conservative as you, you managed to get the biggest player at school to fall head over heels for you and you broke his heart, you don't strike me as the type to own a thong." She reached for it again but I slapped her hand away laughing.

"My situation with Brendan was not as simple as you describe it," I shook my head chuckling while ignoring the subject of my underwear hoping she would drop it.

"Aren't you going to see him soon?"

"He's coming back from collage tonight, same as Connor, but he's going home so by the time he rolls around here tomorrow I'll be long gone." I zipped my suitcase and looked around my room, pictures and memories of the past three years were hung up all over the wall.
