It is important to know who God is and his characteristics and attributes. This was so important to Joseph Smith he along with, it is believed, Sidney Rigdon wrote the Lectures on Faith that was used in the school of the prophets. It also served as the doctrine portion of the Doctrine and Covenants until sadly, it was removed from the cannon of scripture in 1921. In lecture fifth, the Godhead is explained in detail. Some contend this lecture is the basis for the removal from the cannon of scripture. It provides for a somewhat different view of the Godhead than current Mormon doctrine. However, based on the scriptures, I believe it to be more in line with the truth than the current view held by the church. The differences are enlightening. According the fifth lecture, there are two members of the Godhead, namely The Father and His son Jesus Christ. More importantly, this lecture gives insight into the Holy Spirit. According to the doctrine of the LDS faith, the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit. However, according to the fifth lecture we find that the Holy Spirit is the mind of God the Father. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit can be considered the mind of Jesus Christ also, because he and his Father are of the same mind. I have always been confused about the Holy Ghost and how it functioned. This lecture along with the scriptures it contains, helped me to understand more fully.
