Don't Believe What You See

Chapter Six

Let me tell you about Pilar Helms. Pilar is a tall, but not too tall, pretty, but not too pretty, girl who is terrified to stand in front of the room. Now I know what you're probably thinking, "Oh jeeze, what girl now-a-days isn't shy?" Well I'll tell you this, Pilar isn't shy, she can't stand in front of a crowd. She has panick attacks if she feels somebody just staring at her. She can't handle the fact that somebody is only focusing on her. When Pilar was forced to stand in front of a crowd when she was younger, her lungs shut down and she started having a seizure. The next thing she knew, she was in a hospital. The only person who was there was her mom.

"Honey, are you okay?" She asked.

'Yes mother, I'm totally fine, I have no clue where I am or how I got here, but I'm doing peachy!' is what she wanted to say, but instead she just nodded.

When Pilar was in sixth grade, she met Peter. How? It's a simple story, Pilar wasn't watching where she was going and he was running the opposite direction and tackled her. The rest is history, because they don't remember how they started talking after that. Or even when they started dating, they just know that if they never met, their whole lives would be upside down.

"So what do you want to do today?" Peter asked Pilar ask she walked in the door. She set down the fast food on the nightstand by his bed.

"Well, I was thinking we could go to the carnival tonight!" Pilar always loved the carnival, but Peter has a deathly fear of the giant ferris wheel. He would never explain why, he just did.

"No, no way, not happening, nope."

"Come on please Peter!" Pilar begged. She came over and sat on his lap.

"Pilar! Please don't make me!"

"Come on! It will be so much fun! We don't even have to go on the ferris wheel. We can play the little arcade games and we can stay safe and sound on the ground," Pilar gave Peter her best 'you know you can't say no to me because you love me' face. Peter sighed loudly and simply said, "You're very very very lucky I love you," Pilar shrieked and kissed Peter on the nose.

"I'm getting something to drink, do you want anything?" Pilar asked. This was so like her, it wasn't even her house, but here she is, being so polite.

"No, thanks, I'm good," then Pilar left the room. Peter took his phone from under his pillow and saw his text messages. He had twelve unread messages from Lola Prelz. He finally texted back.

"Will you just leave me alone?!"

"I will leave you alone when you become mine."

"I have told you a million times, I nave a girlfriend," Peter was getting frustated.

"So cheat on me with her, I don't mind," and with that, he deleted her number and lost all respect he could have possibly had for her. Pilar came back carrying a mountain dew and tore into the food still sitting on the nightstand.

"Peter, are you okay?" Pilar asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he lied. He decided not to tell Pilar about Lola, what she doesn't know won't kill her.

It was seven o'clock and the carnival just started. Pilar was wearing her normal sweatshirt and jeans with her hair pulled into a ponytail, and Peter was wearing his normal clothes too, Adidas shirt, Adidas athletic shorts, and Adidas shoes. When they walked in, two boys started staring at Pilar and whipsering. Peter noticed and grabbed her hand. The boys left after that.

"Do you want to go play some arcade games?" Pilar asked.

"Sure, I'll win you something," Peter joked. Peter has always been terrible at these kind of games and they both knew it. So they walked over to a booth where you have to squirt water at a target and race someone next to you. Like always, Pilar won. She won a small stuffed lizard.

"I'll be the romantic one and give it to you," Pilar handed the lizard over to Peter and he smiled.

"Ladies and gentlemen! We are here today to decide who the cutest couple can be!" A man with a loud speaker said. He was standing on stage in front of a big crowd. Pilar and Peter stood in the back of the crowd and watched.

"Up here on stage we have five couple who we think can be the best couple! The couple will be tested on how much they know about their partners!"

"Question one, what movie is your girlfriends' favorite?"

"Hey, I can't really see, do you want to move up?" Peter asked. Pilar face had pure terror on it and she violently shook her head no.

"Why don't you move up? I'll be here when he's done," Pilar suggested. Peter kissed her on the cheek really quick, then moved up.

"Question two, what is your boyfriends' favorite sports team?" They asked those questions for ten minutes before taking a break.

"Okay folks, we're going to take a five minute break, then we'll be back, but stay where you are to see our crowd kiss cam!" A camera passed through tbe crowd and a lot of people kissed the person they were standing next to. Old couples, young couples, even a boy took that oppurtunity to tell a girl he liked her. Nobody refused the cute act of kissing on camera. But before they shut the kiss cam off, it landed on two people, Peter and Lola.
