Chloe's POV
After Ashelyonna left, I took a moment to dry my tears and pull myself together. I ruffled my hair, trying to mask the mess I had become, and headed inside the school toward the bathroom.
"I can't believe she's making me do this," I whispered to myself as I turned on the tap and splashed cold water on my face.
It was a half day at school, meaning we could leave after lunch. I wanted to bail now, but unfortunately, it was still morning. I grabbed a tube of foundation and applied it under my baggy eyes, hoping to conceal the remnants of my breakdown. A quick swipe of lip gloss was the final touch, but it slipped from my fingers, clattering to the floor as I felt a vibration in my back pocket.
"Shit." I muttered, fishing my phone out. The caller ID read Unknown. I rolled my eyes and answered with a huff.
"What!" I snapped, glancing over my shoulder at the two girls who had just entered, giggling loudly.
"Is it done?" a familiar feminine voice questioned.
"Not technically. I got her to talk to me, though. That's only the first step," I stated, trying to keep my annoyance in check.
"Well, it's a start," she replied, her tone almost encouraging, though it did little to ease my frustration. "The car's outside, waiting for you, Chloe."
"But I won't be able to leave until lunch," I reminded her, trying to rein in my impatience.
"I didn't make you into a vampire for no reason, Chloe," she said coolly before ending the call.
A smirk tugged at my lips as I stared into the mirror, my reflection looking more like a monster than the queen I usually embodied. The veins beneath my skin were becoming more pronounced, and my eyes were bloodshot, a telltale sign of the transformation creeping in.
I ran a hand through my hair, feeling the weight of my decisions settle on my shoulders. I knew what I had to do next. I would have to go back to Ashelyonna and the others soon, but first, I needed to solidify my plans. The power that came with being a vampire was intoxicating, but I had to be careful. This was only the beginning.
With a final glance in the mirror, I left the bathroom and headed toward the exit, ready to embrace my new identity and the chaos that would undoubtedly follow.
Stefan's POV
"Stefan, I can't keep things from you anymore; I just can't." Ash leaned into my neck, her breath warm against my skin.
"Let's go home. I cooed, rubbing her back soothingly. The tension in her voice tugged at my heart, but I needed her to feel safe.
"Lemme tell Jess we're leaving, then," Ash informed me, moving to the other side of the room.
It had been a while since I'd had a proper intake of blood. I had eased up when Ash came to stay with me; I didn't want to scare her off. So, I had stuck to human food, which wasn't bad but definitely not healthy for my kind. I resolved to have a blood bag when I got home—hopefully without Ash seeing me.
"Okay, let's go. She's with Jacob," Ash told me, and we left together.
Chloe's POV
I walked out of the bathroom, only to spot Ashelyonna and Mr. Tate walking down the hall together. My stomach twisted at the sight. It was hard to miss how close they had gotten, and honestly, it irked me. I had always harbored a little schoolgirl crush on him, so seeing him cozy with her was tough to swallow. However, never-the-less I had bigger things on my plate to worry about.
I smirked at myself, wiping the blood from the corner of my lips and watched the two girls I had feed on head towards the cafeteria, scarves wrapped snugly around their necks.
Who knew being a vampire would be so much fun? It was so easy—snatch, feed, erase. I thought as I compelled the nearby students to forget about me and what I had done.
I strolled down to my locker to grab my bag before heading outside. As I entered the parking lot, I noticed Mr. Tate's car peeling out of the school grounds.
I walked over to my ride, rolling my eyes at the sight of him. Being supernatural had its perks, sure, but it also came with disadvantages. Everything was heightened—my sight, my touch, even my smell.
It had been a month since I was turned, and it had been a rollercoaster. The moment I opened the passenger side and settled into the front seat, I was hit with that familiar scent—the wet dog smell that Rosalee joked about in Twilight. It was now my reality.
"Someone's grumpy," Kendrick snickered, causing me to glare at him.
"Really? I didn't notice," I shot back sarcastically as I buckled my seatbelt. The truth was, everything felt different now. I no longer cared about grades or graduation; dying at 18 really changes a person.
I glanced over at Kendrick, softening my gaze as I said, "I'm starving. Let's get out of here." Leaning slightly toward me, he looked at my lips, indicating he wanted to kiss me.
"For food or...?" Kendrick trailed off, his gaze intense.
Holding his stare, I kissed him, deepening the embrace. It was rough and passionate, and I didn't complain. Why would I? I liked it that way.
"She's going to be pissed if she finds out we're screwing around with each other," I remarked as Kendrick started the engine.
"Let her be pissed," he shot back, a smirk on his lips. I giggled, and he drove out of the school yard, leaving the chaos behind..
