Jessica's POV

I parked my car outside Jacob's house and climbed out, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. His family had always welcomed me with open arms, and I cherished that warmth. Jacob's older brother, Justin, was home from college for some weird family matters. I'd always found him charming, but today, my focus was on Jacob and his family.

As I approached the front porch, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. I knocked on the door, and before long, Jacob's mother, Yvette, opened it. She enveloped me in a tight hug, her familiar scent of lavender wrapping around me like a cozy blanket.

"Come in, sweetie!" she said, pulling me inside. I smiled, knowing that Jacob and his family didn't know about my abilities—and I intended to keep it that way. Honestly, if it weren't for Stefan's influence, I wouldn't even be socializing right now.

As I entered the living room, I spotted Jacob sitting on the couch, a grin spreading across his face. His parents settled into chairs across from him, and Justin and his girlfriend, Lily, took their places on another couch.

"So you guys are probably wondering why you're here," Jacob's dad, Mitchell, began, rubbing his temples as if he had a headache. Yvette placed a reassuring hand on his back, and he sighed, glancing at her.

"Why isn't he here yet?" Mitchell asked, his eyes darting toward the door.

"Honey, just get it out; the boys will get here eventually," Yvette replied, her tone calming.

Mitchell turned to us, his expression serious. "Lily and Jessica, we consider you both part of our family. That means our family secrets are now your secrets too."

I exchanged a worried glance with Lily, who looked just as confused. Jacob squeezed my hand, kissing it softly as if to ground me.

"The world we live in is a mysterious place," Mitchell continued, leaning forward. "It's twisted as nature takes its course and reality sets in." His voice had taken on a gravitas that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I listened intently, the weight of his words settling over us. What kind of secrets were they about to share? I glanced at Jacob, who seemed just as captivated. The air in the room felt charged, like static before a storm.

Mitchell took a deep breath, clearly preparing himself for what was next. "There are things in this world—forces—that we can't see. They can be dark, dangerous, and unpredictable." He paused, letting his words sink in.

I felt my pulse quicken. "What do you mean?" I asked, unable to contain my curiosity.

Jacob's grip on my hand tightened as he looked at me, worry etched across his features.

"We've kept a lot from you," Mitchell said, glancing between Jacob and me. "Things about our family that have been passed down for generations. There are supernatural elements at play, and it's crucial for you both to understand the risks involved."

...

After what felt like an eternity, Mitchell and Yvette finally revealed what was on their minds, and I was in shock.

"I didn't believe it at first, but... werewolves?" I whispered, disbelief coloring my tone. Jacob glanced at me, his grip tightening around my hand.

"Jess—" Jacob began, but he was cut off as Kendrick, a guy from my school, burst through the door.

"Hey! Uncle Mitch, did I miss anything?" Kendrick called out, plopping down next to Jacob and me.

"What's this doing here?" Kendrick sneered, referring to me.

Jacob stood up, anger flashing in his eyes. "Cousin or not, soon-to-be alpha or not, you will not talk to my girlfriend like that," he snapped, his voice low but fierce.

Kendrick chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Chill, man. I was just asking."

I pulled Jacob closer, trying to calm him down. There were tensions simmering beneath the surface, and I could sense the unease in the room.

. . . .

For the rest of the night, Kendrick was a total nuisance, but everyone had to cope with him since he was set to become the new head of the wolves. Each sarcastic comment and obnoxious laugh grated on my nerves, and by the end of the evening, I was ready to go home.

I was puzzled and conflicted, my mind racing with everything I had learned. The reality we knew had shifted dramatically. Witches, vampires, now werewolves—how could all of this coexist in the same town? My thoughts were a chaotic swirl, but I knew I needed to talk to Ash and Stefan about it.

The sense of fear mixed with curiosity gnawed at me. I was scared of the unknown but also eager to understand. As I drove home, I resolved to keep my wits about me and find a way to navigate this new reality. It was going to be a wild ride, and I needed to be prepared.
