Chapter 21

I fiddled around my spiced tomato rigatoni pasta, using one of many forks placed beside me. I looked up and around the large dining room and down the rest of the long, dark oak table, wondering to myself who would actually dine with him. With Damien. Is no one scared?

"Violet...what's wrong? You haven't tried the pasta yet. I know it's your favourite." He chuckled and easily leaned towards me from his seat, at the head of the table and took my fork swiftly out of my grip. He poked at a pasta piece with the fork and lifted towards my mouth.

My eyes widened. "Wh-" Before I could finish my sentence, he stuffed quickly stuffed the food into my mouth.

I stared at him, shocked at his actions. "Eat it," he said in a playful tone.

I chewed automatically at his words. His dominance...that's what scared me.

By the end of the meal, I had forced myself to eat about half of the plate of pasta; despite my brain and stomach instructing me not to.

"I take it that you weren't very hungry." He paused to finish off the remaining red wine in his glass. "That's alright though. You can save your appetite for our ball this evening."

He stood up and gently ushered me out of my seat. "Our ball?" I said quietly in confusion.

"It's your birthday from the stroke of midnight, isn't it? We definitely have to celebrate it," he laughed slightly.

I stayed quiet and he frowned slightly. "Come on, let me take you to the garden. I know you haven't been outside yet." He smiled.

He grabbed my hand in his and led me outside; my hot, clammy hands interlocked with his cool ones. I craned my neck up to look at the sky once we left the marble arch doors and simply stared. How could the sky, something so beautiful, also be so bad...so deadly.

"That's our sky. Isn't it beautiful?" He asked, voicing my thoughts.

I bit my lip, looking back at him. "Yes, it is..." I admitted in defeat.

He smiled at me and winked. "Just like you."

I laughed before I could stop myself. "That's so cheesy!"

His smiled widened at my words and I immediately took that as a cue to drop my smile.

"You don't have to be afraid to talk to me. I'm still the same guy I was yesterday." He said, leading me to sit beside him on the edge of a large, white marble, circular fountain.

I didn't respond. My gaze travelling to the array of flowerbeds circling us. I stood up and walked towards the lavender flowers. A smile lit my face as I bent down and slowly sniffed its perfume.

"Why is Lavender your favourite flower?" He asked, standing up and walking over to me.

"The smell. It was the smell I grew up with. My mum told me about her gardening... obsession when she was expecting me." I paused, chuckling slightly. "She'd ordered lots of different flower seeds, but somehow instead, a huge order of Lavender seeds got sent."

I stopped talking, suddenly having remembered who I was talking to. I cleared my throat and stood up.

"It's quite cold out here," I lied.

He smiled and pulled me in front of him, so he cold wrap both his arms around mine. I swallowed, my eyes turning wide in sudden shock. One of his hands suddenly let go of mine and travelled to his trouser pocket. He pulled out a single Lavender flower and placed it above my right ear, in my hair. I lifted my hand to touch the flower, but his hand suddenly secured me back in it's cage around me.

"You don't want it to fall out," he whispered in my ear.

     "Why am I here?"

"To see the sky....to see my world," he murmured, his face curled into my neck and I felt a smile form - I gasped slightly at the contact.

"No. Why am I here...In your world?" I asked.

"So we can be together. So that you can be here, with me." He lifted his head from my neck. I felt a breeze rush toward the exposed skin, and suddenly I felt scared. "You do want to be here, don't you?"

I didn't respond; unsure what to say back. He let go of my arms and turned me around, until I was facing him.

"You want to be with me, don't you?"

I dropped my gaze to my shoes, hoping he would drop the question.

"Violet. You want to be here, don't you? With me?" He carried on persistently and lifted my chin his thumb, until it met his gaze.

He grabbed my hand and squeezed it gently, waiting for my answer.

"I have...a soul mate," I whispered, hoping my lowered voice would keep him calm.

His hand's grip on mine tightened dramatically, I ignored the pain and simply bit my lip; afraid to talk and tell him that he was hurting me. He released my hand and folded his arms across his chest.

"I know. But don't worry. After tonight, you don't need to worry about your...bond with him."

"W-What do you mean?" I whispered, my eyebrows creasing together in confusion.

"I'll break your bond tonight, at the stroke of midnight," he smiled. "Then we'll be completely together and you won't have anything forcibly holding you back to your old world."

     "What?" I breathed.

"I know how much you hate your bond with Alex. This is my gift to you." He leaned towards me and gave me a kiss on my left cheek. "I just want to give you everything you want. You can get that here....with me."
