Chapter 4
After I had escaped the grasp of the evil Alex, I slumbered onto my bed. That jerk didn't even bother to apologize. Not that I would accept it, of course. But still, it's common courtesy to apologize to the girl that you just kidnapped. My face lay head-down on my pillow and my limbs hanged haphazardly. I had asked him just to drop me home. There was no point in me heading back to school, since I had no more lessons for the day. The only reason I was actually staying was for Jayden. Jayden. Damn, I'm a horrible best friend.
I hand felt around my pocket for my phone and I scrolled down my contacts until I found his name. The guy called me five times. One call back won't make him feel any better. I jumped up from my bed and ran down the stairs, passing Aaron on the way down. He didn't bother to ask where I was going. As his 'dorky, younger sister' - his words not mine. He knows that I'll just be down the road, over at Jayden's house.
I ridiculously fast walked my way over to Jay's house; sliding through his side entrance and in through the garden entrance door. Walking in's not a big deal, since his parents were rarely at home during the day... or night. I walked through the impressively tidy living room and started tip-toeing up the beige carpeted stairs. I stopped short of his clean, plain white bedroom door. It was so different from mine; which is covered, top to bottom in logos and signs. Should I knock? Should I just walk in? Maybe- I was torn from my thoughts, when the door suddenly opened. I managed a small, meek smile.
"I don't know why you try so hard to be quiet. You make even more noise that way," he pointed out.
Oh, well there goes my plan of trying to surprise him. His face is just blank and emotionless... I don't like it. He's always been the one with the smile constantly on his face. I frown uncontrollably as he turns his back to me and walks further into his room. I follow him in and fold my arms in discomfort:
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ditch you, I just-" I started blubbering, before I was cut off.
"That's not just it. I mean yeah, I needed you to help, but you just disappeared. I tried calling you. I thought something happened to you," he semi-shouted, running a hand through his hair.
"Jay-" I started to say, until I heard footsteps behind me. I turn around to see Rose standing at the doorway. Her slightly surprised facial expressions softened over and she gave me and Jayden a smile.
"You're back! Jayden was really worried about you. I'm glad to see that you're alright," she said and walked over to Jay, giving him a hug. "I have to go, but I'll see you two later at the party," she said, winking at Jay and walking out.
I cleared my throat and shuffled my feet. Why the hell did that bother me so much? Sure, I was used to girls flirting with him and stuff, but- What am I saying? It's not like I care or anything. Well, of course I care, he's my best friend. It's my right to care about who he dates. Besides, I don't like her. She's just so... I don't need a reason not to like her. I just do.
"So um, you and Rose huh?" I clear my throat again and laugh weakly.
"We're just friends," he sighed and fell back onto his bed. I walked to his window and gazed out into his forested garden.
