Luci and I found a house fairly quickly. It helped that money wasn't an issue. The house was in a very rich, gated community close to downtown without being right in the middle of it. I tried to convince Luci that we didn't need something so high scale, but he argued that I deserved the best. Luci had been so sweet lately, it was hard to remember that he was the Devil.
"What about this one?" Luci asked pointing out a black leather couch. I smiled as I held onto his arm.
"I've already told you, I trust your interior design skills," I joked with him.
"This should be an us thing. It's our house," he replied. I leaned my head against his shoulder before looking around the store.
"That one," I said pointing to a warm brown sofa. He smiled at me before motioning to the salesman. We walked though the store picking out various furniture we got to the baby section and I let go of Luci's arm. Immediately, a gray paneled crib caught my eye. I smiled gently as my fingers touched the painted wood.
"What is it?" He asked, worried. I sniffles and tried to keep my unshed tears back as I looked at him.
"I'm starting to have hope," I admitted. Even though I didn't spell it out exactly, I knew Luci understood what I was trying to say. I had hope that I would still be here after giving birth. Luci squeezed my hand gently in his before we moved to the next section. We got everything from the big ticket items to the dinnerware before we finally left. Coming back to the District there was a commotion. Rose was arguing with someone near the elevator.
"... I don't care what you want. You can't go up the elevator," Rose yelled at the girl.
"What's going on?" I asked, beating Luci to the punch. The girl turned around and we were face to face with Sunni. Immediately, my hand went over my stomach protectively. I knew she hadn't done anything yet, but she seemed like the type that would be capable of doing anything. Luci must have seen my movements because he put an arm around my waist and stepped closer to me.
"It's too crowded here," Luci said before pressing the button for the elevator. We rode up together in silence. Luci always kept himself in between us. When we got to the loft, Luci sat me on the far side of the couch and turned crouched to Sunni.
"Who exactly were you trying to fool?" Luci glared at her. Sunni smirked before chuckling.
"I guess it can't be helped. You know what I am so you must know why I'm here," she said. By this point, I was completely confused.
"I'm lost. What the hell is going on?" I asked.
"Megan, don't you dare move. This isn't Sunni, it's a shapeshifter," Luci explained quickly.
"And I'm here to test how hard it's going to be be to cut off the life force to that demon in your stomach," she added. At hearing those words, Luci's body launched forward and grabbed the shapeshifter by the neck.
"Oh, it'll be very, very hard," Luci growled at it. The veins around Luci's hand bulged as they turned black. The black veins spread through her face before her skin rotted away to dust. I could only stare at shock and amazement as Luci turned to me with literal fire in his eyes. He took a breath as he closed his eyes for a moment. when he opened his eyes again, his irises were back to their normal warm brown color.
"What the hell just happened? What was that? What did you do to... that thing?" I asked.
"A shapeshifter was sent to test my security on you. It wasn't actually Sunni. I killed it with the death touch. It doesn't actually take that long but I needed to hear it's last thoughts to make sure they were alone," he explained.
"Death touch? That sounds like something off of a Marvel movie or anime," I thought out loud. Luci paused before he just started laughing.
"I just obliterated a supernatural creature with a touch, and you're thinking about anime?" Luci asked. "You're still not scared of me?" He added. I shrugged.
"Would you ever hurt me?" I asked. He shook his head.
"Never," he answered. I stood with a sigh as my hands rested on the top of my small bump.
"That's why I'm not afraid. I know you'll protect me, and I know you would never purposely hurt me," I explained as I walked closer to him. I took his hand in mine before placing his hand on my cheek. He stared at me as I smiled gently.
"See? If you wanted to hurt me, you would've done so already," I said. He sighed before pulling me into a hug, holding my head against his chest.
"You are the weirdest and bravest human I've ever met," he breathed before kissing my head.
"They're sending people after you now," Michael said, showing up out of the blue.
"We've gathered that. Thanks," I replied, before letting go of Luci.
"How many rooms are in your new place?" Michael asked.
"Five... why?" Luci answered cautiously. Michael sighed as he placed his hands on his hips.
"Looks like I'll be Earthbound for a while. You guys need to move from here as soon as possible. I'll stay for back up," Michael said. I expected Luci to tell him we were fine, but he didn't. He froze, thinking.
"Is the situation that dire?" I asked, suddenly feeling anxious. Luci's eyes glanced at me before pulling me back into him in a hug.
"It's not that the situation is dire; we just want to be sure that we're doing everything we can to protect you and our baby," Luci answered.
"Amelia?" I blurted out loud.
"What?" Michael asked confused.
"She's thinking of names for our little girl," Luci chuckled. Luci kissed my head before looking back to Michael. "Seems like you can't read Megan either. You get used to it after a while. Her pregnancy brain doesn't help," he joked. I hit his chest playfully with a pout.
"You don't have to make fun of me," I muttered. Luci chuckled and kissed my cheek.
"I like the name," he smiled.
"We'll move tomorrow. Okay if I crash in the guest room? You two sleep together now anyway," Michael said before disappearing down down the hallway. I guess Michael was joining the party.
