My sister continues to glare at us as we got closer. "Where have you been?" she throws up her hands. "Mom, says you've barely spoke to her and James says that you haven't even seen him...You've barely seen me." I fire back "Yes, Tiffanie we all have different lives and college is really busy." "I can tell" she sneers in disgust at Josh. "This is Josh, Tiffanie-"I start "Her, boyfriend" he jumps in and extends his hand. Great, babe now my entire family will know! She squints her eyes at me then back at him. "Sure...okay" shaking his hand.

"So how long have you been dating" she asks. "Ugh..." I begin "For a few months" Josh proclaims. "For a few months" she throws her hands up at me again. "Do you want to head back to my room or keep talking out here" Josh firmly asks. "We're not going back to your dorm" she screams "I just wanted to let you know a bunch of us are going to mom and dads for the 4th. You should come with us. Not sure if...if he wants to come with you?" "Sorry, sis. We are actually going with some friends to Washington. My friend Lacey invited us to join her at her parent's place." Tiffanie looks angry at this point. "Well, I'll let mom know that you won't be coming. She'll be disappointed in you. Just don't be stupid when you go...wear a seat belt and keep your hands to yourself" she stomps away and doesn't look back.

"So that's your older sister" he asks. "One of them" I say. "Is everyone so passive aggressive and uptight in your family?" "You have no idea?" I say. "Well unfortunately, they have no idea how many times I didn't keep my hands to myself." I start laughing and it soothes me with relief as I think about myself within my family environment. Every time my family comes around I feel like a different person. I have be on the defense. I can't be open or honest with them. We don't want the same things out of life. And they're so God damn controlling, passive aggressive...and more controlling.

Josh leads the way to his dorm and I start laughing again at the scene. The bed isn't made, our books and papers are scattered on the floor near the chair and on the table, and my bra his hanging on the lamp post. "What?" he asks. "You invited my sister into your dorm...could you imagine her face if she walked in and saw my bra there...she would have lost her shit! She probably would have run out of the room screaming that she was going to call my mom." I couldn't stop the laughter escaping my mouth. My family wasn't necessarily prudes or blind to the world, but they were definitely judgmental. "Well, then I guess she hasn't found out yet?" he laughs. I embrace him as I continue to laugh and gives thanks to the fact that I found him when I didn't even want to come here in the first place.
