Breakfast at Tiffany's and bottles of bubbles, Girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble
The song fills in my ears as I peel open my eyes. A sudden jolt of pain on my temples make me screw my eyes into a deep frown. I try to blink away the blurred vision of unconsciousness as I shift to my side and notice my phone buzzing. Lila's name and number flashes on the screen.
I start to panic and looked around. It's still dark.
I'm still in the same camp I was in before, with Paige. The campfire, burnt ashes, it is all there. I can't find Paige.
But didn't we both leave?
What am I doing here? What happened to me?
I look at my phone and answered the call.
"Hey," I say.
" "Hey??" You're an hour late. Morta, it's eight in the evening and I told you to come before seven. Where are you? You're not picking our calls and when you do, you say "Hey?" " She screams into the phone and I restlessly rub my forehead. Something is not right.
"I am s-s-sorry. I kept..I kept them-my phone in my bag and... and I left my bag in Paige's room. I didn't hear the call." I look around trying to understand what happened and that is when I remember those green eyes.
"Green eyes?" Lila says.
"No-nothing. I was saying "goodbye sweetie pie" to Paige. I'll talk to you later. Bye." I hurriedly hung up on her and fished in my bag. Everything is in its place. Even my organs. Nothing happened. Who was that?
Should I call Paige? Probably not. It's not safe for her either and it's late.
I pack my bag one last time and dialed 999, keeping a distance of one inch between my finger and the call button. Guess my sisters were right after all. I should have taken the real pair of shears with me. From my free hand, I took out the ordinary pair of scissors that I had with me and kept it ready, if in case of some ninja action.
"So what if it's a fake pair, I can always chop off your fingers and the hair on your mostly bald head, bloody kidnapper! Mess with me and you mess with death." I murmured, convincing myself more than whoever that green eyed girl was.
I scan the entire area and resumed walking.
***
I knocked on the door and nobody opened. My house was locked which meant that my sisters were either at the tapestry workshop or at our parent's house where my cousins Hughoc and Tarren live. Other than these two places, they could be at the Furies.
I quickly dial Lila's number and she picks up on the second ring. "Hello. Where are you?"
"I am here. Where are you guys and why is the door locked?"
"We're at Mum and Dad's. Oh, and by the way, Tarren is on his way to pick you up but first he'll drop you off to the workshop. I need you to bring our tapestry."
"Our tapestry?" I asked, perplexed. She has never asked me about our own tapestry before. I hardly even remember where we've kept it.
"Just do what I say. No questions. It's important. Get the tapestry and don't get killed." She says and hung up, while I roll my eyes at her.
"I don't never listen to you. Because if I don't, you'll kill me and if I do, you'll.......okay, I'll figure that out later." I tell myself when I see a black Ford Fiesta turning towards me. I notice Tarren on the driving seat and waved at him, "Hang in there!"
***
My cousin brother pulls the car a block before the workshop. "I'll wait here. Go get the tapestry."
I roll my eyes at his bossiness. "I think Lila would appreciate it more if you come along with me."
"You're a motherfucking Morta, Martha. You don't need me. Take your shears with you." He says and I sigh, already mentally slapping myself for what I am going to confess.
"I didn't bring my shears. I lied to Lila and Chloe. Please don't be mad." I give him my sweetest smile and his face breaks into a wide grin. "So this is a fake one?" He asks me and I nod.
"Fake or not, this will do. You can always chop off someone's hair or their hands or legs."
"That's what I thought." I giggled and he laughed.
"Go ahead. Nothing will happen to my brave sister." He smirks and I roll my eyes, smiling at him.
The walk stretched only up till two minutes and soon enough, I was there.
I open the door to the messy workshop. Looms are tied up with different coloured hair or as we call it, the Life Threads of people. I have worked in this workshop my entire life, spinning and sewing, and most importantly cutting the life threads of people but personally, what I honestly enjoy and hate is the tapestry work, and...
"What's taking you so long?" Someone says and I jump.
"Are you planning to give me a heart attack? Because you seriously did." I scold my brother whose expression becomes amused for a second and then turns back to being annoyed.
"Just find the tapestry."
"Okay," I say quickly getting to work and found it in no time. "Got it!"
I take the tapestry in one hand and gait my way outside the workshop with my brother. Tarren starts the engine but it doesn't start. He looks at me, confused and tries again. The car starts but pushes back into a white Mercedes. The car alarm starts to ring.
"Oh my God. Run!" I tell my brother.
"Are you kidding me?" He panics. "But what if they get my number plate through the cameras and fine me on a 'hit and run' case."
"It's so dark outside. Just GO!" I push his hand and he quickly starts the engine, driving off.
The moment we arrive at my parent's place, I notice a black signboard of Tartarus written in gold hanging on the entry gate. Nostalgia hits me and I look around as my childhood flashes in front of me in bits and pieces.
I meet my parents with comfortable hugs and soft kisses before suddenly Chloe pulls me aside, "You are in danger."
"What do you mean, I'm in danger?" I ask her after a long pause of asking myself if I heard her right.
"Someone stole your life thread."
