The moment I get to my alarm, I hear a faint knock on my bedroom door. "I am up." I call out, and fall instantly back on my bed, covering myself with the duvet up till my eyes.
"We need to talk." Chloe says and I let out a muffled groan. "Come on, out!"
I hear the door opening as I play dead under the duvet, as if that's going to help for an immortal like me. Sometimes, I really hate being an immortal. "Martha." I hear Chloe say and accepting my fate, I sit up right and yawned.
"Get ready. We are going to meet Augury and his friend, Cassandra. I don't think you can deal with this all alone." She said.
"Uh-uh? I thought about it yesterday that I'd meet Augury." I gave her a smirk.
"Oh, yeah. Sure." She rolled her eyes and left. I gave her a 'What-the-hell' look but she wasn't here for it, so I yelled. "You guys underestimate me! Gah!"
We walked down the road to Augury's apartment, and I found my mind wandering back to yesterday. Towards Ansel and to the time when he walked with me to my door in the midnight. He is nothing like his friends, Ashton and Chuck. Are they even his friends? They seem more like acquaintances. So they are to me. I mean, Ashton and Chuck, they are not bad, but we haven't seem to get along that well yet.
Except on that party. My conscious narrowed her eyes at me, and a feeling of guilt washed over me. Maybe, Margo got jealous because of that.
But doesn't Margo already have a boyfriend? Matt?
"Earth to Martha." Lila waved a hand in front of me.
"Sorry."
Footsteps echoed down the hallway as we rounded the corridor and reached Augury's office. I knocked and heard a small grunt of 'come in'. I opened the door.
"Hello Augury. How have you been?" Chloe smiled.
"I am alright." He sighed making clear that he sure as hell wasn't alright. "What can I do for you today?"
"We just wanted to-"
He pressed a button and a girl came in with the drinks, there were two yellow colored drinks and one red one. Augury eyed the waitress then smiled at me. "Martha, take the red one. I ordered that especially for you."
I smiled back as I took the drink and sipped. It tasted like Kiwi juice, it had a sour aftertaste too. My face automatically scrunched up at regular intervals as if I had been sucking on lemon shells. I take another sip.
"Our sister, Martha did a careless job in handling one of the tapestries and now she's lost them. We were wondering if you could be of any help." Chloe smiled sweetly at him. "Maybe Cassandra could help."
"Cassandra is not here." He said with a stern voice then sighed. "She has gone back to troy."
"Oh, then...What should we do?"
"Maybe just let it be. Why put in efforts? Besides, no one really knows the song of death, other than Martha. I am sure nothing will happen to the dying person." He smiled uncomfortably.
"It is still a risk. We don't know who that person is and how powerful that person is, who stole it. What if they damage the tapestries? It is still a risk, Augury. I am surprised how carefree you are." Chloe said quite seriously. Man, she is a boss to everyone.
"But is there anything you can do?"
Chloe stayed silent.
"Its better if you'd just let it be."
"But-"
"I'd let you know if I predict something." He gets up and its time to go. I got up abruptly and my mind zoned in and out in a weird dimension. What was in that drink?
I pushed through the doors, ignoring the cheerful ringing of the bell above, darting a suspicious look at the drink. Could I trust anyone? I don't want all of this. Why am I always put in trouble just because of the fact that I am a demigod of death? What do I do? Escape to Brazil and get plastic surgery or something? That was hardly an option. It didn't seem like I had a lot of choice in the matter. Right now, dealing with the problem is my best bet.
"Martha." Chloe and Lila said at the same time. I stopped walking and turned around.
"We can't sit like this all day. There is something that we need to do. Lila and I are both going to Troy,to meet Cassandra. Till then you would not do anything that risks your life. You need to be safe and careful. We are leaving now."
"Right now?"
"Mom and Dad will be with us. You don't have to worry about that."
"Oh? Okay. Bye, then."
"Be careful, Martha." They said as they left in the mist.
I jammed my hair back near my eyes, glancing around furtively. I need to be careful this time. Maybe I should call a taxi or something? But what if the driver rapes and kills me? I am anyway not feeling good. What was in that drink?
I kept walking and I figured I was close enough to the tapestry workshop now, and darted for the footpath. What if the tapestry is there? But I never went there. A sweet stench of something flooded my nostrils. I saw a fire on the other side of the building where someone was cooking something. Maybe he was a beggar? I silently put the black mask that Margo gave me the night we trespassed the college, and kept walking.
My footsteps were growing heavier by the second until they finally stopped in front of someone's house. I saw the same white mercedes that Tarren had hit once a few months ago when he was starting the engine.
"Hi." A voice speaks and my eyes widen at the sight. Its Austin. "So was it you who had done it?"
My eyes freeze in his. The words get tongue tied in my mouth
"There's one thing I don't understand..why have you been spying on me?"
I stare blankly at him having no clue what is he even talking about. My hands are shaking violently inside my pockets and my head feels lighter than before.
"Staring at me from outside my bedroom window? We also met when the emergency artificial shower got switched on in one of the college corridors?" He said with a wide grin on his face. I can't believe he remembers that night but when did I ever stare at him through his window. I didn't even know he stayed anywhere here.
Can it be possible that he was imagining me? But I had a mask on. What the hell is he even talking about? Maybe he's talking about some other girl.
"...You even kissed me one day, remember that?"
What the-
I never.
"But I still don't get it. Why do you always have to wear this..." he did a weird thing with his hand around his face and then added, "this mask?
"And what I especially don't understand is why did you give me that weird book with threads...?"
My eyes widen and my knees feel like they are made of water.
"What do you call it? Tapestry? Yeah. What is it, don't tell me it's some voodoo shit." He laughs and I stand looking at him, dumbfounded.
"You have the tapestry?" I blurt out but my voice comes out mostly muffled.
He moves closer to me and I barely remember how to twitch, let alone run away for my life. I don't know how this is going to end.
"I think its time you remove this." He's practically a step away from my face. I could kiss him if this was a hollywood movie.
"Get away." I say but it comes out through my mask like I'm saying 'red alert'. I clench my fist tightly, brandishing it in front of me like it was some weapon.
He chuckled, giving my fists a funny look and holds his hands high as if in surrender. "Sorry."
In a second it felt like my inwards were being replaced by some kind of a black hole.
The nausea crept from my abdomen to my head and the world went black.
