"I really don't think this would work."
"Oh it will. Don't you worry. You sneaked out of your house once. You can surely do it again. I'll be there with you." Margo takes a sip of her ice tea and momentarily closes her eyes. I bet the tea is good that she closed her eyes, and not because she is pissed off of my daily 'I-cant' dramas.
"Yeah but that was four in the morning. The party tomorrow is during the day. So how am I going to sneak out of my house in the daylight without my furious sisters noticing me?"
"Just lie." She shrugs and it sounds so simple when she says it like that. I sighed.
"You sure they'll buy it?"
"A hundred and one percent. Don't worry. By the way, I like your new fringe hairstyle."
I blush a little. I had decided to finally cut my hair into this fashion so that I don't have to always worry if my hair were in front of my eyes and enough for them to hide the spot in my eyes. Perhaps, I think too much. I stared into Lulu's eyes yesterday for an hour and hers turned green to black after a few minutes, and then back to green. That happened mostly because I stared for too long, I guess. It felt weird but I am probably just overreacting. Besides-
"Earth to Martha?" Margo waved a hand in front of me and I stirred myself awake from my morning eyes-open slumber. I shook my head and told her I zoned out.
Later, Ashton and Chuck joined us at the table. Margo, Ashton and Chuck shared a hug meanwhile I smiled awkwardly at them and murmured a small 'hi'. The three of them kept talking about some gossip they had heard of lately while I silently sipped my coffee, thought about Austin and worried about what I am going to wear on the party.
I decided on wearing a simple One Direction t-shirt, a denim jacket and denim shorts. But I looked too simple, so I wore some eyeliner, a nude brown lipstick and dabbed some of my other pink lipstick on the apple of my cheeks. That is better, I thought to myself as I bettered the hair in front of my eyes and thought of my plan to sneak out of the house.
Slowly, I tiptoed to the main hall, one hand around my bag that had my shears and some of the dead people documentaries of the day that I was yet to read. I was about to open the main door when I heard an intended cough for me to stop. I spun around dramatically and saw Chloe. "Where to?"
"To the workshop." I gave her a small smile.
"Are you sure that is exactly where you are going?" She gave me a lampooning smile. I hated when she smiled like that.
"Uhuh."
"With makeup on?" She narrowed her eyes and I felt my face on fire.
"It...uhm...I just felt-felt like getting dolled up, you know? Sometimes....I think...that even...fates should look pretty...you know?" I shrugged but the way she crossed her arms told me she was not going to buy any of this. There was no point in even trying. "What is wrong?" I asked and braced myself to tell her the truth if she asks me more.
"You look pretty even without make up, darling." Chloe says and my mouth dropped open.
Did I just hear her say that I look pretty without make up or am I hallucinating?
"Huh?"
"I am sorry if you have been avoiding make up all your life because I never liked make up and because I personally think that fates should look furious like their personalities. But I don't think that matters. I like this make up. Its not bold, nothing too much. Just subtle. Like death. Like you. So natural." She said and I had a two hard minutes of deciphering of whatever was being said to me.
No one has ever told me that I was pretty. Coming that from someone like Chloe who hardly likes anyone, is a big deal. A wide grin split all over my face.
"Th-Thanks."
"Go but come back on time." She smiled and I nodded, smiling back. My eyes are probably heart shaped right now, looking at her.
"Stay away from humans."
And she is back.
"Yes. I will." I said and quickly shut the door behind me. Mission accomplished. I messaged Margo that I am on my way. She replied with a thumbs up and I began walking to the party.
...
The music was so loud that it made my skin tingle and the bass thumped at the same beat of that of my heart as though they were one, filling me from head to toe with music. The moment the security guard opened the gates, the roar of the music got even louder, pulling me in the crowd and wouldn't let me go. I had no choice but to join the crowd that jumped in a huddled group like Tic-Tacs being shaken in a box.
"You made it!"Margo took me in an embrace as soon as she spotted me. I smiled wide at her but my smile soon turned into a cringe when I smelled her. Has she been drinking? Oh, I should have known. Chloe and Lila would be so mad at me if they ever get to know that I went to a party which not only included mortals but also were high from the intake of alcohol and I don't know what else.
"Want one?" Ashton gave me a red paper cup and I told him no. He rolled his eyes and finished the drink, emptying the red cup he was offering me earlier. The songs kept changing and it took five songs, Ashton and Chuck's dare to take a sip of whatever that drink was, my constant protests, a sip, and another, till I was dancing and fully enjoying myself.
"I like this song." I said when the DJ played 'Hips don't lie' from Liam Payne's new album. Ashton smiled at me and the next second, his hand was on my waist. I was feeling thirsty again so I took Chuck's cup and drank whatever alcoholic drink was inside it. Both of them laughed when it burned my throat and I cringed.
"This tastes pathetic!" I told them. "Why do people drink this stuff?"
"Why are you drinking it then?" Ashton laughed and I shrugged, laughing with him. I took another cup but he took it away from me. I frowned at him.
"You are drunk." He said and I placed my palm on his lips. Then placed a finger on my lips and shushed him. He smiled under my touch and I felt weird. I looked around and found Margo sitting alone at a corner.
"What is Margo doing there all alone?" I scrunched my nose in a childish way. Chuck concluded that maybe she was feeling sick. "Shouldn't we go sit with her then?"
"Let her be." Ashton said and I shrugged, swaying my hips to the music. I had my hands around Ashton's neck and then I saw Austin staring at me, expressionlessly. I removed my hands away from Ashton and blinked multiple times. Austin disappeared.
"What happened?" Ashton asked and I told him I am not feeling good, and left the party. I need to go back. I drank three mini bottles of what looked like water and that made me feel a lot better and sober. I felt light headed so I took my bag and immediately headed back home.
"Home?" Lila asked as soon as I opened the door. I hummed and went straight to my room, into the washroom and took a shower. I feel dizzy. I am never ever going to take alcohol ever again in my life, for sure. My eyes were bloodshot and as pink as my lips. The black spots inside my eyes looked a lot less than before. So maybe I was just being paranoid before or maybe I am still too intoxicated to look clearly. Thinking made my head hurt so I decided to let it be.
In my room, I slowly combed my hair and that was when my eyes fell on the bag. The dead people documentaries. The tapestries. I have to cut them now or it would be too late. I shut my door locked and opened my bag.
All my intoxication sobered up as panic got the better of me. I fished my hand deeper into the bag and found only the shears and my phone.
The tapestries are gone.
