What If Our Life Threads Bind?

Chapter 5.

I have no idea what to expect.

I take a deep breath, climbing out of the car. I shudder as I step at the doorway that leads us to the Furies, and I can't tell if the chattering of my teeth is because of the cool breezes or because this place has always given me the screaming abdabs.

I look at the building in front of me, 'The Erinyes' written in bold letters in the signboard. It wasn't some abandoned 'woman in black' manor but a very impressive and expensive abode. The house, however, lives in a constant shadow, making it look slightly spooky. Lila pushed the door open with a creepy creaky sound. Hugh and Tarren put flashed lights from their cell phones into the gloom, for all the good it did, the room remained stubbornly dark. There was a flash of brown fur as a cat ran outside and Chloe screamed.

Tarren and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. Hugh joined us after a few minutes. "Hahaha..Very funny guys." Chloe gave us a cold look while we struggled to keep a straight face. After a few minutes of tension relieving laughter, all of a sudden the door slammed shut, and I saw our bravado evaporating faster than the summer rain. Then suddenly the room lights up.

I need to pee.

"Oh, it's you guys. I thought...somebody trespassed." Alexa, my twenty-one-year-old cousin sister steps into the light.

"Yeah..uhm..we sort of did...trespass. The door was open." Tarren told her and she frowned, then her eyebrows pulled up in a knowing look.

"Tris? Margaret?" She called out.

Two girls with toothy grins and amused eyes entered the room from the same door we got in through. "Hi...Sorry, we didn't mean to scare you guys in real. But you guys took it legit seriously like scooby dooby, and we were enjoying so..."

Alexa shot them a glare.

"Sorry..we won't do it again." said the two girls in unison, their eyes glued to their shoes.

I need to pee!

"Uhmm..could I use the toilet?" I asked, catching everyone's attention.

"Damn girl, did we scare you that bad?" Tris, the little one asks and the elder, fifteen-year-old Margaret with blonde hair nudges her to shut up. I feel the heat flush into my cheeks.

"Guilty." I nervously laughed.

"Darling, the loo is to your right." Alexa smiles at me and I nod, excusing myself from the little family reunion.

"It's pretty serious and, I am very glad you informed us immediately. It's not normal for a life thread to go missing, now is it? Especially a life thread of one of you three, fates. You are supposed to be the one taking in charge of every life thread ever created and destroyed. We should do something before things get out of our hands." I hear a small murmur inside the room as I enter.

"What's going on?"

"Oh, she's here."

"Lila, what are life threads?" Eris asked.

"Its something that we create, design and destruct based on every individual's destiny. The thread is where everyone's life is in situ. Something happens to the thread and the individual drops dead." Lila explains while the little one keeps nodding. Does she understand all of that? When I was her age, I was busy reading about fairy tales and Disney princesses.

"Here comes Augury and his friend," Alexa says as the pair enters. I took notice at Lila's eyes cat down and lips pinched in a straight line, something that she does when she is agitated when Augury greeted us, but I knew better than to ask. Now is not the time...

"Well, I called Augury and his friend, Cassandra here because they have been trained to have visions. I thought it would be of some help to you guys." She added.

"Certainly, but you know, visions don't come when called. They come when they have to... Right now, my advice to you, Martha, is to stay away from people you don't know and stay close with people you trust. Sometimes, people, you may know also change, proving the otherwise. You need to be careful."

So I think I am officially forbidden to make friends with people? I guess that's what.

"Otherwise, Cassandra and I are always there to help. Until then..."

Everyone is almost outstaring Augury. How is he not self-conscious yet? Or maybe it's just with me.

"I forgot what I was going to say...you guys, stop looking at me like that." Augury laughed and I smirked. Turns out, I am not alone.

"Just.Just...try to remember or think of someone who could take your life thread."
