❝ birds scream at the top of their lungs in horrified hellish rage every morning at daybreak to warn us all of the truth,
but sadly we don't speak bird. ❞

A/N: it's gonna get a bit more creepy and scary from here on out, but that's alright because it's almost halloween

We made it to a dead end. A dark wall standing between us and freedom.

"Shit," Walter muttered, kicking the wall.

My hands were wrapped securely around his neck. "Can't we just pass through it since we're ghosts?" I asked.

He shook his head, his curly, soft hair brushing against my bare arms. "No, we don't have enough time for you to figure out how to pass through things."

"Oh," I said sadly, looking around helplessly. At any moment, another demon might attack, or someone could catch us trying to escape.

"Did you know?" I asked him, whispering into the strands of hair surrounding his ear.

His grip on my thighs adjusted slightly. "Know what?"

I sighed frustratedly. "That I would be stuck here forever because Liam thinks I'm an unstable ghost?"

He stopped trying to break the stupid wall. "What? No. I was going to find Carter and then come back quickly so that I could help you find Niall."

Slumping over on Walter's back, I said, "seems like we've been tricked."

I felt his biceps loosen. "Yeah, and I can't see anything, there's no way I can escape at this rate."

That's when I remembered what Louis had given me. In a split decision, I had hopped off of Walter's back and ran back into the dark, the way we had come from.

"Halo!" Walter yelled after me, startled by my sudden movement.

"I'll be back!" I yelled, running blindly in the dark so black, I couldn't see my hand in front of my face.

Finally stopping, I looked around and walked slowly until I felt my cloak on the ground. Yes! I picked it up, but it was stuck to something on the ground.

Tugging at it, one lamp light flickered to life and in that second I saw what was dragging my cloak down- a bony hand.

I screamed and yanked it backwards, it released and I flew backwards along with the thing clutched tightly to it.

I screamed again, my body frozen with fear on the floor. The cloak got pulled backwards, and my balled fist which was wound in the cloak went with it.

"Halo," a voice whispered, and then another and another, whispering my name. "Join us," they whispered.

I shook my head, my ghost body paralyzed. Hands encircled me and seemed to rock me back in forth.

"Become one of us," they whispered.

I shook my head, holding the cloak to my chest. "No."

Then Carter's voice, "Halo, join us, you can finally be with me. "

"No, no, no," I said, grabbing the cloak and struggling to get away, but the hands still shoved me down onto the cold tile on the floor.

"You'll be able to see Niall," they said. "Niall, Niall, Niall."

"Just scream right here one more time and you can be one of us," Carter whispered, pining my small wrists down with his knees as I felt his breath on my face.
