Chapter 21

6 2 1

I woke up at 6 this morning, with a plan set in my mind.

Last night, after saving the details onto my phone, I left the Headquarters without letting Vivian know. I didn't know where she went, so I didn't bother looking for her. I came home and set out everything that I would need tomorrow, a gun, my clothes, my ring, and my phone.

Right now I was getting ready to leave. I had already gone on a run this morning to calm my nerves, to get rid of some of the adrenaline. Vivian was watching TV downstairs, and I told her I was going to go train today so she didn't suspect anything. I would've told her, but I couldn't trust anyone. Especially since she was dating one of the heads of the team.

I put on the clothes I had set out last night, black skinny jeans, combat boots, a plain white tee and a large hoodie to cover myself with. I tucked my gun behind my jeans and pushed my phone into my pocket. My ring was already wrapped around my index finger, just in case I needed to use it today. I couldn't take my car because of the risk of getting caught, so I ordered a taxi to take me to the place.

I didn't know much about the place that the attack was, but I knew that it was an isolated, dangerous alleyway. It was situated next to a large electricity house, meaning it was out of bounds for the population, which meant it was the perfect place for something like this.

I asked the driver to drop me a kilometre away from the venue to avoid suspicion and getting caught. I looked at my phone, it was 2:11 pm, meaning that it had already started. I continued walking through the eerie area and finally reached my destination. I wasn't too close to the warzone but I could hear the bones breaking, it reeked of blood and death.

If there was anything good about this fight was that the place was like a maze, concrete walls hiding different parts of the area made it extremely difficult to fight, your spatial awareness had to be perfect to be able to survive.

I hid behind one of the concrete walls and peered from behind it. The fight was still far ahead, but I could already see how many casualties the Shadows had faced so far. The fight wasn't as big as it usually was, there were only about 30 people from each side. Surprisingly, the Shadows were doing quite well.

I pulled my hood over my head and crept to the next wall, closer to the fight. I rested my hands onto the cool concrete and studied the scene. A few of our soldiers had already dropped, dead, I assumed, however none of the Riverwells had fallen yet.

This fight seemingly wasn't one of weaponry, it was a fistfight, a fight of strength. Although both sides were covering their identity with masks, I could tell that the Riverwells had murderous looks on their faces. They were well-trained, they were trained to kill. Their technique wasn't to attack, it was to defend, and just when the opponent's ego got a tad too high, thinking that they were going to win, the Riverwells would strike. Their strike wasn't just a flimsy punch, it was deadly, and boy they were good.

I cringed as I heard a Riverwells punch one of the Shadows in the jaw, the sound of his bones shattering echoed through the alley. I leaned back into the wall, looking away from the fight. I knew what I was about to do was wrong, a cowardly move, but I had no other choice. I had to do it, we were going to lose again. Even though no one was talking about it, I knew that this was one of the final chances we had to win before they destroyed us.

With a deep breath, I turned away and crept along the concrete wall. According to the map on my phone, there was a random clearing behind where the Riverwells were standing. The clearing wasn't too open but I would have to be careful. I was going to make use of my advantage, I had a gun, and they hopefully didn't.

I bit back a gasp as a Riverwells walked across the intersection a few metres in front of me. He was holding a gun and a big one at that. I had brought a flimsy handgun. Suddenly, it dawned on me that maybe the Riverwells hadn't just left all their soldiers to fight to the death, they were smarter than that.
