"Lena!" I sprinted after her. "Lena! Please stop!" She hesitated, but turned around abruptly. She looked mortified. "Lena please... you can't tell anybody."
"You... you and Lily?" She immediately covered her mouth with her palm as soon as she asked the question, as if it had a bitter taste on her tongue.
I let out a frustrated sigh and covered my eyes with my hand for a second. I looked at her, deciding how to explain everything. I slowly placed my hands on her arms and squeezed lightly. "I'm begging you... don't tell anybody..." She thought about it for a second and shook her head.
"No! Please you don't understand-" I started to say.
"What do I not understand?" She removed her arms from my grip. "That... that you've been doing things with your sister?" Out of reflex I immediately covered her mouth, afraid that someone might hear. We were standing in front of Mrs. Davis' house and when I looked over someone was peeking out the window, behind the curtain. I pulled her aside, behind the tree between out houses.
"No... I mean..." I breathed. "I don't know how to explain this to you Lena." I ran my hand through my hair in desperation to have a way out of this.
"She's your sister, Harry..."
"You know she's adopted right?"
"But that doesn't matter!"
"I don't care if it doesn't matter to you!" She gasped in surprise at my sudden rage. She seemed terrified even.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." This wouldn't work if I got mad at her. I have to find a way to stay calm despite my growing impatience. "All I ask you you, Lena, is to not say anything to anybody." I said, emphasising every word.
"How long has it been going on?" She crossed her arms in front of her chest. Should I tell her the truth about Lily and I? I don't really have a choice now do I? She's already seen enough.
"A couple months now..." I kept my voice low, constantly looking around for people that might pass by.
"Oh god..." She shook her head and looked at the ground. "She's just a kid Harry, I doubt she even knows what she's doing."
"She's old enough to know things." She stared at me like she couldn't believe what I was saying.
"But you still know it isn't right!" Her eyes suddenly lit up. "Oh my god..." She whispered to herself. "It explains everything."
"What?" Were Lily and I obvious at some point?
"How she got all upset when I kissed you..." She was starting to connect the dots. "...or why she never gave you my number that day I asked her to..."
"I'm sorry... Lily got a little jealous of you. She knows you're the kind of girl I'll go for if I weren't with her." I explained, telling her the truth
"With her?"
"Lena, I love her." I breathed out. That's the only way I know how to say it. No matter how hard my heart aches whenever I say it, I'd still repeat it... to her, to anyone. It hurts how I can't tell or show people because I want them to know, but because I'm begging them to keep it a secret.
"I can't believe this..."
"Look... we're not hurting anyone-"
"Then what about your mom!" She shot at me. The crease on her forehead reappeared. I was having the idea that she wouldn't let this go.
"We'd tell her..." I didn't know why I said that, but Lena didn't seem to buy it. She gave me a questioning look. "In time we'd tell her."
"And how do you think she would feel?" She quizzed me further.
"I don't know! I don't have things planned out, all I know is that I love her and I don't want to lose her... I thought I already did, and I don't want it to happen again." Lena may not have the idea that I almost lost Lily because of her. I don't want to blame her for anything now, I just want her to bear with me with this.
"Then... why did you ask me out?" This time, she looked hurt, which I am sorry for.
"Because I thought Lily and I were over and-"
"And because you know I like you, you went for me?" She finished for me. I want nothing right now, but to end this conversation already.
"I know it sounds bad, and I'm sorry." I've already lost count of how many times I said I'm sorry to her. "I wasn't intending to used you or anything Lena, I think you're a great person-"
"You don't have to explain yourself anymore... I already know." She looked crushed. I wished I didn't ask her out. I wish we never felt comfortable around each other so this wouldn't have happened.
"Don't tell anybody Lena." I begged her one last time.
"Okay..." She sighed and I thanked her. I thanked her as many times as I said sorry to her. "But soon enough people would find out. Nothing kept hidden is never revealed Harry." She warned me. And I have to admit... I felt scared. Her words hit my bones and I know that what she said is true.
"Why did you come back?" I asked, choosing to ignore her warning.
"Oh... I left my phone in your car." I nodded and she followed me as I walked back till we were in front of our house. I got a glimpse of Lily looking out the window, but immediately retreated into hiding as soon as I saw her. I opened the passenger side of the car and gave Lena back her phone. She thanked me and I watched her as she walked back to their house... with my secret that she was forced to keep.
