This entire chapter is just a long ass conversation but it's important for the plot so please bare with me.
The black-haired woman and I are seated in front of the bay window as she sips on her black coffee, clearly avoiding eye contact.
The police came and arrested the weird teeth dude and the cafe has been temporarily closed by the owners but they let us stay since we stopped the criminal.
Aiko sits next to me, fiddling with her thumbs. The awkward silence fills the room and neither of us really know what to say. This woman in front of us is clearly strong and has some strong connections. She wished to speak to me but she hasn't said much; it's bizarre. She's just sat there, drinking coffee.
"Who are you?" I finally break the silence and she looks at me, making eye contact. This is the first time I notice her eyes, a solid black colour with what looks like glitter sprinkled in them. They're truly breathtaking, but that's taken away when she smirks at me.
"I wondered how long it would take for you to ask." She says calmly, like she's some all knowing being. It's kind of annoying. "The name's Saya Akamine. I'm a teacher at U.A."
"You're a teacher?" I scoff, but instantly regret it when she looks dead at me. "Sorry." She lets out a dry laugh.
"It's fine. I don't blame ya. I don't seem like much of a teacher, and I'm not a proper one. I work as a substitute." She takes a sip of her drink. "Yanno when the teachers aren't in, which isn't very often." Another unsettling silence surrounds us.
"That quirk of yours, " I begin again, "It's pretty strong. What is it exactly?"
"You're forward. I like that." She smirks. "My quirk has potentionally the crappiest name going. It's called 'iron fillings'. The iron found in my blood comes through my skin as tiny iron filings which I control through powers of magnetism. I got the ability to produce metal from my mother and the ability to control it from my father." There's another agonisingly long pause. "Your turn."
"What?"
"Tell me about your quirk. I told you about mine. It's only fair." I'm very hesitant to talk about my quirk due to the controversy around it and it's science, because there's barely any theories or knowledge. But she's right, it's fair.
"Luck." I mutter quietly.
"Excuse me?" She raises her eyebrow and I freeze. I take a deep breath and explain.
"My quirk is called 'luck'. It's incredibly hard to explain and it might sound cool but there's not much to it. Stuff just kinda works out in my favour." She gives me a quizzical look, edging me to continue.
"For example, if I was out in a situation where I'm probably going to die, I'd just get hurt instead. Not the best outcome I know, but it's better than being dead. I'm also suspected of having the ability to change probability, but I don't really know how to yet. It's not flashy or special, but it's sure as hell handy."
"Huh." She says simply.
"Anyway. You wanted my help?" I say, finally getting to the point.
"Ah yes." She clears her throat. "I want to enrole you at U.A."
I'm stunned to silence. She wants to what? She's kidding right? How am I...? What???
"Pardon?" I croak out.
"I want to enrole you at U.A." I raise my eyebrow at her, prompting her to further explain. "I'm trying to prove that the enterence exam is unfair and it relies of flashy quirks to get shit done. It's all well and good fighting giant robots, but that doesn't give kids with quirks that rely on combat with people a chance. I've seen incredible kids throughout the years that have insane quirks, but they didn't pass the enterence exam because it was bias to flashy quirks.
"I've proposed a different exam to Nezu and I can only prove it works if someone actually does it, the down side is that it's got to be incredibly hard and he only let me put forward an exam that was used for training but was pulled for its difficulty. But that's not important at the moment. I'll contact your parents and alert Nezu and get you a uniform and it'll be completely fine."
"And what if I say no?" She seems to freeze in her seat. I've never taken an interest in U.A, I've given up on my fantasies of being a hero. I've spent too much time around here already.
"Well... Uh I uh..." She trails off, clearly not prepared for that answer. "Surely you should talk to your parents first before ignoring such an opportunity?"
"I don't have any parents." My mother's dead and my father fucked off. It's not something I talk about all too often and I don't plan to now.
"Oh uh your guardian then?"
"Don't have a guardian either."
"You don't have a guardian?" She seems completely lost for words. "Where are you staying? Who are you staying with?"
"Nowhere and nobody." I say bluntly.
Complete silence. That's the only thing that surrounds us.
"If that's all you wish to say to me then we'll be going." I begin to stand up.
"Wait!" She grabs my wrist from over the table. I'm stunned. "Why are you leaving so quickly? You clearly want to protect her right? That villain was blabbering on about your sister being powerful and valuable before you kicked him into next week."
"What...?"
"You want to protect her right? So I guess that you've been traveling round because of the way you want to leave."
"Yep. You're right. Which means I need to go." I pull away from her grip and go to walk away as I grab my mask off of the table.
She practically climbs over the table and dives towards me, stumbling.
"You can stay with me!" She yells in a frantic panic.
"What?" This is getting weirder and weirder. "Are you insane? You don't even know me."
"Please. I really need this." She pants. "I'm not allowed to try this with an already existing student because Nezu thinks it'll mess with their emotions. If I don't do this then worthy students won't get in course in later years. Please."
I don't respond to her, just blankly stare at her. "Look I get that you want to protect your sister and going to U.A. Will make that difficult but you could stay with me. I have a spare bedroom and I can feed you and clothe you and whatever you want." She pauses, seemingly trying to come up with more arguments.
"Hey! If you stay with me then your sister will have more protection because you'll be living with a prohero." This grabs my attention. I've been protecting Aiko on my own for years and it's exhausting and I don't even have any authority to do so. Technically my actions are illegal. Having a pro helping me out would actually be incredibly useful.
"Why are you so desperate?" I finally snap. She lets out a sad sigh.
"I've been trying to convince Nezu for years to let me do this, he's only just allowed it and I really want to get the ball rolling as quick as possible."
"Alright." I pause and think for a second. "Here's the terms. You give us a roof to stay under, food and protect her with your life," I pause again and point at Aiko, "and I'll be your little experiment."
"Really?!" She sounds like an excited school girl.
"Only on those terms, yes." A smirk plays on my lips as I step closer to her. "I hope you understand that you're giving more then you're getting."
"Yeah well, I've got what I wanted." Huh. It looks like I've underestimated her.
She holds her hand out on front of me and I smile. I take her hand and shake it.
"Deal." We say in unison. No backing out now. This better be worth it.
