"How is she?" I questioned Summer as I got into her car Friday afternoon.

Summer pressed a finger to her temple and turned her sunglassed face to me, obviously still hungover. "She's not taking it well. At all." She'd stayed with Grace at the hospital all night.

"And her dad?"

Summer just shook her head. "A month or two, honestly. But he can walk and stuff. For now." Last night, Grace's dad had been rushed to the hospital, and now he was dying. I wiped away the hints of tears that misted my eyes.

"Oh, Gracie," was all I could say. We drove in silence to the mall.

Neither of us felt like seeing people (both for different reasons) so we walked pretty fast to Edible Arrangements. Grace and Mr. Young absolutely loved the chocolate-dipped fruit.

I held the clunky basket as we started back to Summer's car, and Summer called Jen to tell her we were going to the hospital. I walked like a zombie, still in disbelief. I didn't know what could make the day worse.

"Alyssa!"

Crap. Nevermind.

Marin and Ava had suddenly appeared in front of us. Summer glanced at me in confusion.

"Mind if we chat?" Marin asked, but her stiletto nails were already gripping my shirt sleeve. "She'll be done in a second, Sunny!" Was she doing that on purpose? Marin pulled me into a corner of the mall, Ava standing behind her.

"Look, Alyssa-"

"Alexa, actually."

Marin gave me an irritated look. "I don't care. Look, Reed is not yours. He's mine. So back off, loser, before you get hurt."

I laughed in her face. She was stunned.

"Is that really what this is about? You want Reed? Good luck, Marin, really. You're not going to steal him from me."

Marin smile was slow and a little creepy. Mostly, it was terrifying. "Oh, but it's already happened, honey." She chuckled, and then left me there, shaking. What else could I do?

Summer came to get me after a minute, and I walked with her to the car quietly. I couldn't even talk, I was so scared. Was Marin right? I couldn't help but wonder what she had done. I didn't even want to think about losing Reed, but according to Marin, I already had.
