Warning; huge Endgame spoilers in the chapter so if you haven't seen the movie, you can save this for later (unless you don't mind being spoiled. The choice is yours!)
This is basically a fix-it fic (I hope) to heal your soul.

The God of Mischief was stubborn. He always defied his odd.

New York, Earth, 2012
These idiots. Loki rolled his eyes, he would've said something if his mouth wasn't muzzled, as he was being surrounded by chaos. And this time it wasn't even his doing. Maybe that was what bothered Loki; the chaos wasn't coming from him.
He watched Tony Stark convulsing on the floor, cardiac arrest if he had to guess, an agent running off with a bag contained the Tesseract - his Tesseract, to 'somewhere safe' as they said. And then the Hulk jumped out of the wall sending the agent and the bag in opposite directions. The bag someone opened and the Tesseract somehow ended up at Loki's feet and ooooh this is nice, Loki thought deliciously. He looked around and no one paid attention to him. No one. Even when he picked the shining object up he remained unnoticed. Loki thought this must be the first time he was grateful he didn't get the attention.
In a flash, he disappeared into thin air. Gone. Escaped with that thing he was so obsessed with.
It was only then did Thor notice his brother was missing. "Loki?" The Thunder God called, looking around but there was no sign of the Mischief Maker nor the Tesseract. It was too late. Shouldn't have looked away.

"Alright stop!" Loki shouted. He couldn't. He thought he could, but he just... couldn't. Seeing Thor in pain was unbearable. Thankfully Thanos did stop.
There was a moment when his eyes met his brother, but then he couldn't hold eye contact for he knew Thor must be very disappointed in him. Thor - Thor said there was still good in him, that he could be more. And he - he let him down. Loki did try to be better but, just like everything he did, he failed. He could never be more, and the only thing he regretted was that he let his brother down. Bitterly he held his hand out and summoned the thing he should've left it there on Asgard to be destroyed in Surtur's fire.
Blue light shimmering and the next second the Tesseract was in his hand. Safe. Unharmed. Everything was the opposite of Thor's words earlier; We don't have the Tesseract. It was destroyed on Asgard.
Loki didn't have to look at Thor to know how displeased his brother was. "You really are the worst brother." Thor said, and he was right! Thor was right and fuck! Loki wanted to just scream that he was sorry. He was sorry for not being able to be a better brother, but all he could do was look at Thor and say, "I assure you, brother; the sun will shine on us again."
Then there was Thanos, and Thanos had to step in and interrupt their moment, "Your optimism is misplaced, Asgardian." The Titan said.
"Well, for one thing," Loki looked at him, "I'm not Asgardian. And for another.... we have a Hulk."
What followed next was mayhem and it all happened in an instant; the green friend jumped out of nowhere and was charging at their enemy, and Thor. Fuck. Thor was in the way and he - he was already highly injured he wouldn't be able to take the Hulk and... no. Loki had to save Thor. That was all that mattered to him. He tossed the stone away like it meant nothing and leaped out at his brother, pushing him out of the way of the Hulk's rampage just in time. And when they landed he made sure Thor landed on him because Thor couldn't afford getting more injured.
