Sam Carson left his house as usual, not bothering to look when crossing, scrambling to get to his refuge.
The garden came into view and he let out a sigh of relief that he could finally get away from the claustrophobic world and into the garden.
Sitting curled on a bench he reached into his bag for his new favourite book and started to read amongst the tall flora around him, content to forget the rest of the world.
He started reading Frankenstein for an essay for English but was quickly enjoying it. God he could spend every hour of his day reading. The darkness of the book quickly contrasted the beautiful garden surrounding Sam.
The birds called to one another and the gentle wind passing through the branches of the nearby trees quickly lulled Sam into a dazed feeling of absolute peace and calm.
Sam was very quiet, normally keeping to himself. That was until Emily, Chris and Holly decided to bring him forcefully into their group. Sam was put off by their loudness at first but soon they became the best people in Sam's life. He loved his friends but he was still the same shy boy they saw sitting by himself that day at the cafeteria.
.............................................................................
After about an hour of reading, he felt a feeling of heat on his face. Soon this became too much and he resurfaced from his dreamlike state of reading, blinking and rubbing his eyes to see what caused it.
More like who caused it.
A boy roughly his age was watching him with a thoughtful gaze.
When Sam's questioning eyes reached the other boys', they made eye contact. Sam's grey eyes meeting brown ones. He flushed and looked back to his book, blond hair falling into his eyes again.
Sam watched for a while through his hair as the other boy turned and started picking a leaf off a plant.
"Hey!" Sam's rage overcame his shy nature. Mentally he was surprised at how much he cared.
"What do you want?" The other boy threw back chuckling.
"Piss off if you are just going to ruin the plants"
"Woah ok I thought this was a public place I didn't know it was so precious" the boy's eyes glittered mischievously "I'm new in town what's your name"
Sam just narrowed his eyes deciding he didn't like this boy and got up closing his book. This attractive (what) boy wasn't going to get away with that "whatever"
He quickly left, almost running to get the next bus deciding it was better than walking home.
"Hey! I'm Liam.... Liam Jones" the brown- haired boy yelled after him "hello?"
But Sam just pretended he couldn't hear as he jogged faster for the bus clutching his book to his chest. Getting on the bus his heart beat loudly in his ears and it barely calmed down after Sam sat down... was he really that unfit?
.............................................................................
The following day Sam felt drawn to the garden again after school and excused himself from his friends to rush there.
Arriving, Sam wasn't really sure why but unlike other days where he prayed for peace and quiet, his heart sank when he saw the empty garden. Well apart from an old man sleeping in the corner. Dragging his feet, he sat on his usual bench but was lost in thought, ignoring his book.
Leaving the garden earlier than usual he walked to the bus stop. But once leaving the gates felt a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey... It's you again" Sam could barely focus on the other boy, instead staring at his smile- who has such perfect teeth? Shaking his head to free his thoughts, he saw his bus leaving.
"You made me miss my bus, idiot" his eyes narrowing.
Liam laughed nervously and glanced down "Sorry mate I was just trying to make some friends before I have to go to school tomorrow"
His curiosity getting the better of him and he mentally forgave the strange new boy "Fine... I'm Sam." He huffed "Which school are you going to?"
"Lakewood... please tell me you're going there and I don't have to sit alone" he laughed
Sam sighed "yeah" he said quietly "wanna walk? Which way are you going?"
"Oh umm I'm trying to find Chester Lane? Do you know it?"
Sam's Road. Sam glanced at Liam's face as if to try and read it "yeah.... I live on that road too... ok this is weird are you a stalker because I promise I'm super boring"
Liam scratched his neck laughing awkwardly "shit no I promise I'm not"
They walked in silence for a moment Liam stealing glances at the smaller boy's face
"Ummm... Sam?"
"Yeah?"
"What's it like? At Lakewood? My last school was pretty rough so I wanted to come somewhere at least half-way decent" he laughed again
"Yeah well it's nice enough... I've got a good group of friends and have avoided bullies so far so... it's alright... do you do sports? If so you're pretty set" Sam finished
"Yeah I play a bit of football" Liam stated sheepishly
"You'll be fine then... damn I'm jealous though... I can just about survive P.E but really I can't do sport for shit" Sam laughed for the first time and Liam stared wide eyed at the difference it made to the seemingly serious boy.
"SHIT"
Liam jumped and cringed hoping he wasn't about to get punched because of his staring. He relaxed when he realised Sam was looking at his phone
"I forgot to grab some milk" Sam sighed "well it was nice to meet you. I'd better grab some or my mum will kill me"
Liam laughed "Better get some then so you don't die." and then under his breath "cause then I wouldn't be able to see you again"
But Sam, focusing on texting his mum back didn't hear him "ok well see you" before hurrying off into a nearby shop.
Liam watched Sam go for a moment before turning to go home. He decided that he wanted, no, needed to see this boy again... even if he promised himself he would be more careful.
Twirling the bay leaf he had picked in the garden yesterday between his fingers, he smiled softly.
.............................................................................
Sam turned back for a second to watch the brown haired boy walk in the other direction wondering how such a gorgeous boy would take time to talk to him. Wait no umm gorgeous in a platonic way... yeah ok he could handle that *cough*
Thinking about Liam, Sam almost bought the wrong milk and managed to mishear the person on the till, giving her less then he should have. Scrambling last minute in his pockets for more change he mentally cursed Liam for something that had both nothing to do with him, and everything to do with him.
