What am I?

Na-Ri woke up in a great mood. Life is great. Her job is great. Her bosses are great. What could possibly go wrong?

She got to work bright and early and took the elevator to Mr Soo's office as requested. She knocked on the door and waiting for him to signal her to enter.

"Good morning Mr Soo!"

"Good morning Na-Ri, thank you for coming. There is something I would like to discuss with you, but we have to wait for Mr Bang"

"Oh ok. Is anything wrong?"

" No, not all... We just need to ask you a favour".

Bang PD-nim walked in. He was looking nervous, which was highly unusual.

He sat down next to Mr Soo, and smiled at you. You smiled back, but you had this knot in your stomach, and it just won't go away.

"Na-Ri" starting Mr Bang, "you've been with us for over a year now, and we are so happy with your work and ethics. You've proved to be an asset. Now..." he stopped, looking for the right words. "You know how hard the boys work, and they don't tend to have much of a private life. One reason is because of ARMY's strong feelings towards BTS, but most importantly, the boys do not have to time to be in a committed relationship. It's not a company policy, it is their own statement. They know they wouldn't be able to nurture a relationship with a girlfriend with them being away and busy most of the time. However, they still feel lonely have.... urges like any human being."

"I totally understand what you mean PD-nim. I found myself wondering how they cope with all these emotions. It must be so hard for them. They are in the best years of their life and yet, they are so lonely beside being together as a group." Na-Ri commented with empathy.

"Exactly, you are totally right. You have the right sensitivity to understand this difficult situation" Mr Soo reinforced.

"But... what does it have to do with me?" Na-Ri replied.

Mr Soo and Bang PD-nim looked at each other with a look that said "we're gonna have to tell her now; here goes nothing"

"Since they are not able to seriously date at the moment, their option would be to be... casual about it, but this is something they do cannot do as, if word goes out about casual encounters, it would destroy their hard-earned reputation. Now....y-you are a trustworthy woman who understand the intricacies of such situation; we do not mean nor want to offend you by asking this, but would you agree being the boys' "friend with benefits"? Mr Soo asked in an almost high pitched voice.

It's like time stopped. Once again everything went quiet and in slow motion, just like when she met the boys for the first time. But this time, it felt more like a nightmare. She stayed still like a statue, transfixed by the nameplate on Mr Soo's desk, looking at it, focusing on it like her life depended on it. Her mind went blank. She couldn't move. Then she finally opened her mouth and said: "What did you just say?"

The two men started to fidget in their seats; they expected this reaction. You're not going to ask a woman to make herself available whenever the urge hits and not expect some sort of backlash.

Bang PD-nim said: "Na-Ri, we know this is a lot to ask, but –" he was interrupted by Na-Ri "And yet, you're asking?!!? What am I?? A prostitute??? Are you asking me this because I am a foreigner and in Korean people's mind foreigners are easy? Is it why you hired me instead of the many capable Korean women who applied for this job??" she screamed, tears welling up in her eyes. She felt betrayed. "It now makes perfect sense!"

"No no no, not all! It's not why you were hired! Far from it, Na-Ri. This was never part of the job in the first place. It's just...." Mr Soo stopped and sighed.

He felt disgusted with himself for approaching Na-Ri with such a request. If he had a daughter, he would never allow her to do such a thing and yet, he was asking her to do that very thing. He felt like a hypocrite.

The next hour was about the two men explaining that it was not ideal and that they would have never dared approach her with this request if they had another option. Deep down, she knew that they were not perverts and she knew where they were coming from with this. These boys were trapped within their fame and victims of their desires; it was an impossible situation.

She always wondered how they coped; now she knew. They didn't cope well and they had reached the point where they needed someone to help, someone to hold close, someone to feel...even if they couldn't claim this person as their own. She understood that it would be her for all of them, and that gave her this sickening feeling at the bottom of her stomach.

Mr Soo reassured her that if she was to agree, she would be guaranteed to be treated with respect and care and that the only people to know would be them and her. Since she was already close to them, no one would suspect a thing. She knew that boys were always kind and gentle with her, so this was not a concern. She just couldn't get over the fact that she would be "doing it" with so many different men who all know each other. It was just weird.

"Do they know?" Na-Ri asked panic in her eyes.

"Well... erm... I mean... Yes. They actually asked us to ask you first how you feel about this, as they care about you." Mr Soo couldn't bring himself to lie to her about his; he had done enough damage for the day.

Wow... they know, she thought.

"They said they will feel comfortable with you, rather than anyone else" Bang PD-nim added.

At that moment Na-Ri wondered why hearing this made her happy. They'd rather it be with me than anyone else.

"I need to think about it; it's- it's a big deal. I can't think right now, I just...." Na-Ri stuttered.

"Why don't you take the day off and go home. Take your time and come back when you're ready to let us know. Whatever you decide, you will still work with us, so don't feel pressured. We're the ones needing a favour, not you, ok?" Bang PD-nim. With that said, she stood up and proceeded to walk to the door.

She walked mindlessly through the streets of Seoul. She instinctively walked toward her bus stop, but her legs did not allow her to stop. She kept on going. It was still early morning, as she had just arrived at work a couple of hours ago, but it felt like a whole day passed by. She could still not believe the request she had received. Mom would be proud of me, I guess that would be me living a little, or is it taking it a step too far? She said to herself with a sarcastic laugh.

After walking for an hour, she reached her tiny apartment and let herself fall face down onto her bed. With all these emotions, she fell asleep.
