Here Lies

Chapter 10

Together Elizabeth and her dad hauled us onto the kitchen table. "Alright, I can't promise much but I can get those bullets out of you." Elizabeth's dad said as he rolled up his sleeves.

Suddenly I felt my bones breaking, somehow I was turning human again. I let out a half animal, half human cry before I collapsed back onto the table huffing, I was still a wolf. "Adam? What's happening?" Elizabeth asked as her hands hovered over me uncertainly. Darkness closed in around Damien and me, our breathing fast and wheezy. Our shallow breaths made us lightheaded and I remember giving a high pitched whine before the darkness swallowed us whole.

I awoke slowly, Damien was trying to get me to awaken. I could feel some one running their hand along our thick, glossy black fur. I lifted our head and looked around, I saw bloody towels that were once white. I braced myself as we slowly got to our paws. "Damien?" Elizabeth asked, Damien was in as I was too weak. Our ears flicked back to her and Damien turned our head so we could see Elizabeth. "Dad! They're awake!" Elizabeth called out to her father.

"So I still don't understand this whole thing, I don't like it either but as long as you don't hurt anyone we're good. I get that this doesn't really matter much when the curse takes over but these are good people that don't deserve to be hurt or killed." Elizabeth's dad said.

Damien made us walk a few steps before Elizabeth opened the back door and Damien pushed us into a run, he picked up a scent quickly and by sundown we had caught enough prey to make us full. Our wounds were healing quickly and when we returned to the house Elizabeth was leaning out her window searching the forest edge for us. We stepped out of the shadows and I saw her eyes light up at the sight of us and Damien gave me control now that I had recovered to my full strength. "Is that you Adam? Or is that Damien still?" She called down softly.

I snorted and jumped around a bit and she laughed as she figured out it was me instead of Damien now. "Hang on Adam, let me see if my dads asleep and if he is I'll get the door just you have to be as quiet as you can." Elizabeth said. She disappeared then and after a few moments I saw her appear at the back door and she opened the door for me. "Come on Adam, remember be quiet." She whispered.

I slowly walked forward and she stepped aside for me, quietly I made my way up the stairs and to her bedroom where she had left the door open slightly and I pushed it open with my nose before entering and curling up on the floor by the foot of her bed. Elizabeth shut her door quietly and sat on her bed as I lay there watching her. Her dark green eyes wandered over my healing wounds before meeting mine. "Your eyes are such a dark color they almost look black Adam..." She said as she reached down and rubbed behind my ears.

"I'm sorry about Tamra and I'm sorry about my dad shooting you Adam and Damien, what was that before you guys passed out?" Elizabeth said as she forced us to look her in the eyes. "I know you can't talk but at least try to make me understand..." Elizabeth said quietly. So that was what Damien and I did, we tried to make Elizabeth understand that I had been starting to turn back into my human form. It took some time and anger and frustration but eventually she understood.

"Adam, I thought that only happens during a blue moon?" Elizabeth asked. Elizabeth shook her head and sighed. "Alright I need to get some now Adam and I have school tomorrow. Just remember to stay quiet tonight I don't need to get in trouble." Elizabeth said before she lay down and quickly fell asleep. Damien and I sat there for a time, sleep refused to take us but finally we lay our head on our paws and closed our eyes.

The next day Elizabeth walked to school using the path we had met on before. I walked with her until we reached the forests edge before we slunk to the shadows and waited. Waiting was pretty boring in fact, especially waiting for Elizabeth and the one time she went outside she did't come over to me. Instead she hung around with Leo which drove both Damien and me insane with jealousy. After that it was a few hours more before everyone started rushing out of the building and finally Elizabeth came over to the path and I stepped into her view. "Adam! Or is it Damien? Whichever I'm clad to see you!" She said. After that she started talking about her day and I listened but Damien didn't, he listened for about 3 minutes before tuning her out. Instead he was focused on something else, which was fine with me as long as he kept us out of trouble.

Suddenly just at the forests edge I felt myself starting to turn back to my human . "Adam? Is it happening again?" Elizabeth asked as she stopped and gave me space. This time my bones weren't just trying to break but were breaking. I cried out and right before I actually changed my body stopped and I remained a wolf, Damien took over as I was too weak and we lay there panting. "Damien? Are you both okay?" Elizabeth asked slowly. Damien walked up to Elizabeth and responded by nosing her hand like a dog. "Thank god, follow me Damien." Elizabeth said as she led us in through her back door.

Elizabeth's dad was sitting in a chair watching what Elizabeth told me was a television. Damien walked over and lay down next to the chair and watched the television. Elizabeth sat at the kitchen table and did her homework. "Which one of them is it?" Elizabeth's dad asked as he looked at us.

"Damien, something's up with Adam and Damien. Adam almost went back to his human form not long ago, I'm guessing he's too weak so Damien took control. Hey dad I need some help with this, does this make sense to you?" Elizabeth said as she squinted at her paper as she brought over to her dad.

"Sorry sweety, I don't understand that math stuff. Wish I could help but you'd be better off trying it yourself." Her dad said as he handed back her paper. Then Damien panicked and gave me control and I felt our bones contort and twist, our body was trying to shift to my human body. I let out a cry and howled in fear. "What's happening?!" Elizabeth's dad said as he jumped up.

"His body is trying to go to his human form, from how Adam and Damien have been handling it I don't think this has happened before!" Elizabeth yelled in panic, she was scared for us.
