>>> 6 DAYS LATER... <<<

**Gibbs' POV**

Jack had been round every single night this week. Nothing romantic happened between us but we were definitely more than just colleagues. We were friends.

Jen was set to come back tomorrow and I couldn't wait to have her back. Yeah I liked Jack but Jen was Jen and she had broken up with Todd so I was hoping there was a chance of something happening between us.

It was late and I was in the basement with Jack. Sophie was fast asleep. I was sanding down my boat and Jack was sitting on the stool at my desk, watching me.

I wanted to call Jen. Hell I needed to call her. I hadn't heard her voice in a week. I grabbed my cell and called her. It rang for a while before it was answered.

**Tony's POV**

Jenny was dead. Gibbs was gonna kill Ziva and I. But that's not what we were worried about. Jenny Shepard was dead. We couldn't believe it. Sophie had lost her mother in a firefight. Gibbs had lost his - well who can keep track these days of what Jenny is to Gibbs. And we lost our friend.

As we were investigating the scene, Jenny's cell started ringing. The ID said it was Gibbs. I didn't want to answer it. Ziva and I just looked at each other.

"I'll get it Tony." Ziva said. Then she picked up the phone using gloves and answered it.

**Gibbs' POV**

Ziva answered Jenny's phone and told me something that made my whole world around me come crashing down.

"How?" I asked.

Ziva had just told me that Jen, my Jen, the Jen that was the mother of daughter was dead.

"A firefight. We're investigating the scene." She replied.

"I'll be there tomorrow." I told her and hung up.

Jack came up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist from behind.

"Jethro, what happened?" She asked.

"Jenny got killed in a firefight." I told her. Tears were streaming down my face.

She let go of me and came and stood in front of me. She reached her hand up to my face and tried to wipe my tears from my face. I just grabbed her wrist lightly to stop her.

"I'm going to California. I'm gonna book a flight that gets me there first thing tomorrow morning." I told her.

"You need someone there with you. Take Abby or me. I don't mind who." She told me.

"I'll make sure Abby can look after Sophie. I'm not telling the rest of the team what happened yet. I'm not even telling Sophie. Abby and Ziva need to ones to tell her." I told Jack.

I called Abby's cell phone.

"Hey Gibbs. What's up?" She asked me.

"Ziva called. They want Sloane and I to fly out and be there in the morning. Can you look after Sophie?" I asked her.

"Of course I will. But Gibbs, I know you're hiding something from me." She told me and I knew there was a frown on her face.

"You'll find out soon enough Abs. Thanks for looking after Sophie."

"Don't worry about it. I'll come and get her in a few hours." She said and hung up.

Jack had refilled by glass of bourbon. She handed it to me.

"Tell me how you're feeling." She told me.

I ignored her. I needed a friend right now. Not a doctor who was analysing me.
