"No! That's not it...well I did feel sorry for you a little bit, but most of all I just figured you needed a friend," Rae stood up in front of her.
"I knew it! You are just like all the rest!" Elissa started to head for the door, but ended up tripping over a pile of clothes in Raes floor. She groaned as she started to get up. Rae rushed to her side, and started helping her up. Once she was on her feet again, she pulled away from him, and went towards the door.
"Elissa, wait!" Rae went running towards her.
"What do you want?!" Elissa said, still walking away from him.
"Elissa, I promise I didn't mean it like that! You just have to believe me," Rae pleaded. "Elissa, please just..."
"Just what?!" she said, turning around, hot tears coming out of her eyes.
"Did you two get into a fight?" Rae's mom came out of the kitchen, drying off her hands on a towel.
"No, mom," Rae said looking away from both of them.
His mom saw the tears coming down Elissa's cheeks. "Oh, dear! Are you all right? Rae! What did you do to her?!" she shot a glance at him, with daggers shooting out of her eyes.
"Mom, I didn't do anything to her! Why can't you just mind your own business?!" Rae screamed at her.
"Rae Gilbert Irving! You do not talk to me that way!" Rae's mom was holding Elissa in her arms. "So, do you want to tell me what happened?"
Elissa just shook her head, "No" and started pulling away from Rae's mom. She walked towards the door, and opened it. She looked back at Rae, and slammed the door on her way out.
His mom stood there, glaring at Rae. "Mom, I didn't do anything!" Rae yelled as he went running out the front door after Elissa. "Elissa, please stop! You have to listen to me!"
"Why should I?!" she yelled, walking off. "I thought you were a good person, but you're just really a jerk!"
"Elissa, I'm not a jerk. You just have to trust me. I'm not going to tell anyone, I promise. I don't think you were even through with your story. How can I help you if I don't know the whole thing?" Rae said, trying not to sound like all he wanted to do was hear the story. He really wanted to help her out, but how could he prove that to her?
"Who says I want your help anymore?" Elissa retorted.
"Elissa...I didn't try to sound like a jerk...I was actually trying to be nice. I didn't mean for you to take it the wrong way," Rae explained.
Elissa stopped, and thought for a little bit. She turned around and looked at him. "Does this really mean that much to you?"
Rae looked up at her, and answered, "Well, you're one of my friends, and I don't like it when youre mad or sad."
"Since when was I one of your friends? Since today at lunch when you decided to sit down and eat with me?" Elissa didn't mean to, but she sounded really harsh.
"I guess so...but just in the past hour or so since you've been here, I feel like I've known you almost your whole life."
"That's just because I've told you my story!" Elissa almost yelled at him.
"Elissa," Rae moved a little closer to her.
Elissa looked at him. "What?" she said rudely.
"Will you come back inside with me? You have no where to go, and besides, your backpack is inside still," Rae told her.
Elissa felt on her shoulders, and didn't feel her backpack straps. "Fine..." she sighed, just so she could get her backpack back.
"Thanks," Rae smiled, and turned back around, heading towards his house. Elissa started following him, when she suddenly heard the sound of screeching tires. She stood a second in shock, and started running towards his house. She ran past him, and in his front door. "Elissa? What's going on? What's the rush?" Rae ran inside after her. He found her sitting on the bottom step with her head in her hands. "Elissa? What was that all about?"
"That was my dad..." Elissa sighed. "I wanted to get out of there before he saw me, and took me back home."
"You can stay here for a while, if you want to, that is," Rae suggested.
"Thanks." Elissa pulled her knees up to her chest, and laid her head on her knees.
"Would you like to come back up to my room?" Rae asked.
"Sure," Elissa nodded.
"So it looks like you two made up!" Rae's mom smiled.
"Uh, yeah..." Rae said. "Now we're going back up to my room, okay?"
"All right, you are still staying for dinner, right?" she asked Elissa.
"Yes," Elissa nodded.
"Okay, that's good," Rae's mom started walking back into the kitchen when Rae looked over at Elissa.
"Mom, wait," Rae said.
She looked back at him, and asked, "What is it, Rae?"
"Um...Elissa...well might need...somewhere to spend...the night. Could she...maybe stay...here?" he said, fidgeting.
Elissa looked at him, wondering, "What is he thinking? Why would I...?"
Rae's mom smiled, and said, "I would ask what for, but it's none of my business. She can if she needs to." She walked back into the kitchen.
"Rae?" Elissa started.
He looked over to her, and he smiled. "You said, you weren't ever going back home, right? I just figured that you would need a place to stay, until you decide to go back there."
She looked at him for a while, and then smiled. "Could he read my mind or something? That's the big question that's been going through my mind since I left. Where would I stay? Course it didn't matter, at least I was out of there," Elissa thought, when she was interrupted.
"You want to go back to my room now? Or what do you want to do?" Rae asked.
Elissa shrugged, and said, "I can finish telling you my story now, if you want."
"Okay, do you want to go back to my room?" Rae suggested.
Elissa nodded her head, and started heading back towards his room. Rae went in, and sat down on the bed. Elissa went over to the bed, and grabbed her backpack. "Wait, are you leaving?" Rae said with widened eyes.
"No, I was just getting my backpack, so I didn't forget it next time," Elissa said, as she sat down next to him on the bed.
