The three days have passed. The warehouse has become packed with more immortals from all the small tribes that are scattered around the world. Whatever tribes we don't have here in New York have made preparations to a line with the UK branch. I briefed the two parts separately on what exactly is expected of them now we just have to see how well these monsters can follow directions.
It is about an hour before the plan is put into action. My group is in the middle of a heavily wooded and secluded area. That was I can keep the innocents safe while this no doubt bloody battle is waged. We are dressed as American Army soldiers. No one looks very different from the other standing beside them. Our counterparts should be showing up soon. Now is the time to place the bait.
I walk up to him and say, "The UK branch will be dressed like us. However, the UK's military knows what our plans are and will be attacking soon. They don't know that we cannot die so this battle will end in our favor." internally my body is rushing with adrenaline knowing that the moment is approaching and I finally get to right this wrong.
"Good," he says will a smile in his voice. I cannot see most of his face due to the overly large military helmet that he's wearing. It's darkly comedic, that outfit he wears; the innocents military standing for selfless people protecting their own. In the end he will know what that means.
I can hear the UK's branch coming before I can see them. Everyone in our ranks standing solid waiting to see our visitors. Within the next minute the army comes into the small clearing that we occupy. They are dressed in UK military uniforms and immediately my branch recognizes them as the enemy. Perfect.
"It's them! Show them no mercy!" the leader of my branch screams out and our side of the army charges the other. What they don't know is that those across from us that they think are humans are not. Their the UK immortals branch and they thrust into battle as my side runs to their ranks.
The battle gets bloody almost instantly. What looks like American soldiers ripping UK soldiers to shreds and vice versa. I stand there shocked and horrified by the slaughtering going on all around me. There's blood everywhere. I have to remind myself why i'm here and that these people would have murdered so many innocent people without regard to their lives. Out of the corner of my eye I see a sudden flash and then fall to my knees. I realize that it was an explosion. It shocks me out of my daze and just in time as a man in a UK uniform is running at me. He slashed his knife at me and I block if with my forearm. Before I can think of what I need to do to get out of this a man takes a shot at him. I take that as my opportunity to get away.
I end up standing to the side for a moment and watch the battle unfolding. I watch as men and women murder each other. I hope that it is not in vain. The only way my plan works is if the immortals are gravely injured while fighting to save someone else. I feel my heart quicken as the dread spreads through my icy veins. If they don't fight to save their people than this war was all for nothing. I begin to panic.
Suddenly, something catches my eye. I see a woman standing in front of a man who is injured and laying bloody on the ground. His chest looks to have a large bloody hole on it. He is telling the woman to get out of the way but she will not. The man that I can only assume shot him aims at the woman and fires point blank at her, hitting her in the head. Her body falls to the ground with a thud. The man who I can only guess is starting to heal from his wound throws himself at the man that killed her. He pulls a knife out and stabs it into the neck of the man right when a loud bang explodes from his gun. Both fall to the ground at the same time. Dead.
The battle continues all around but the numbers on both sides are falling. I watch as more sacrifices play out before my eyes. A man throwing himself in front of an oncoming bullet aimed for his friend. A mother throwing her grown son out of the way to save him from a grenade blast. Some sacrifices are made without the person even realizing that they did anything for someone else. Like when a random Army uniform clad man steps in front of another to get to the person he was fighting, causing him to intercept a bullet.
In what feels like eternity but only could have several minutes at most everyone but me and him have died. He walks up to me. I only got hurt minorly throughout the battle. He looks almost perfect save the dirt that clung to his Army uniform. He is smiling. He has know idea that all our men are dead... forever. He is smiling because he thinks we have won and that within a few hours all our men will be back to normal. I know that he is wrong. I know this because I know how to kill immortals. At this point the ones that died in the beginning of the battle from small wounds such as bullet holes in the heart of head would have healed by now. No one has. They are dead... completely dead.
"I did it, now we can move on to the next battle and take over!" he yells in victory.
I walk up to him slowly but stop suddenly when I hear a faint noise. Two things happen at once, one my heart shatters and two, one immortal stands up shaky. It's the leader of the UK branch. While he is standing up I notice way off in the distant a small girl at the other edge of the clearing. I make a sudden decision. I leap for the man that stands up. I throw myself into him and rip his helmet off. My leader immediately recognizes him and runs over to me screaming. He realizes that trick that I have played on him and is furious. He Pushes me off the man and tries to help him up. I learned recently that fate doesn't care about the size of the good deed or sacrifice. I take this as an opportunity to fire that gun I was giving but had not used since having to kill those people back in New York. It felt like years ago but really wasn't more than a month ago.
I keep my eye on the little girl who is far off in the distance behind to two men I'm about to kill. My leader turns to see my gun points at his heart. I pull the trigger and hit him but he fires at the same time and the bullet hits me in the stomach my bullet hitting him in the chest and the other man in his chest as well. The other man also fires at me while my bullet is in the air on it's way to hit him. His bullet ripping through my chest.
Both are dead the UK leader and him because they died trying to prevent it. I fall onto the ground bleeding out and choking. I have paid my debt to the innocents. Now I can be at peace no more suffering for who I am. No more pretending that everything is okay. I pulled the trigger for this has started with me so it shall end with me. Everything goes dark, and I am not okay.
