We stayed for two more nights. John and Eleanor insisted on taking care of us even though we felt bad for staying too long. We ended up choosing to go back to Vegas on the third day. Ang and Drew went to get our car back from where we left it, and that was when we said goodbye to John and Eleanor and head back to the Deck.
When we got back, the kids had already emptied out a room for Cole. Cole was visibly better, that was for sure. He was not pale like paper anymore, and his heartbeats were more robust than before. Still, I stayed by his side for as long as I could, until James really couldn't have it and asked Drew to throw me out and lock the door.
I went back to my room reluctantly, and didn't sleep well at all. I was tossing and turning on my bed, in and out of dreams. They were all of Cole. One moment I was in the body bag, the next I was on the metal table, then I was in my ward, and a blink later, in the dark room in Sawtooth, Cole tied up in the metal chair in front of me.
But it was different. The Red wasn't there, nor was the Camp Controller. In fact, it seemed that there was no one but the two of us. In the dream, the bloodstain on his neck was gone, and his hair wasn't tainted. He looked like he was merely asleep. His head moved a little, and I immediately kneel down to check on him. His pulse was stable, his breaths, too. I raised my head to look at his face. His eyes opened, and I fell forward, head first, into that blue.
I shot up from my bed, and headed straight to Cole's room.
"Let me in!" The door opened at the third bang. It was James.
"How long had you sleep?" He asked.
"Long enough." I replied, and cut past him. I heard him sighed behind me. Drew was still in the room, asleep on the floor. Emma was there, too, curled up beside Drew.
It looked like nothing had changed about Cole.
"Wake up." I whispered. "Please, wake up."
I really couldn't stand this anymore. What if I was wrong? What if I had damaged him to the point that he wouldn't wake up, ever?
"Sheena." It was Ang's voice. "He'll be okay." I opened my eyes, and realized that there were tears on my face. When was the last time I cried? The night I confessed my ability to the boys? I used to cry so much, and now I couldn't even remember the feeling.
I heard a moan, and multiple gasps. I whipped my head towards the source of the moan, and found Cole had woken up—woken up—and was trying to sit up.
I sat up to help him immediately. The moment he actually propped himself upright, he leaned over the side of the bed, and hurled into the trash can there.
Of course, not much had come out. He hadn't eaten anything in the past three days.
"Where is this?" He asked weakly, and as he seemed to regain his memory, his expression changed; the confusion faded, replaced by horror.
"Where is Liam?" He asked, voice shaking.
"He escaped Sawtooth. We don't know where he is right now." I answered. "You're in the Deck, our home."
"What happened?" He trained his focus onto me and demanded.
"After you and Liam left us, someone must have found you. You were...hurt." I said, the words 'shot' caught up in my throat. "So we helped you."
"How?" His voice broke a little. "I was shot, in the neck."
There it is, the jackpot question. I took in a deep breath, and said before I could over-analyze the situation, "Because I'm not Green. I'm Purple, a healer."
